SELF PAYERS...please give me your insight
Salinagetssleeved replied to SHANA55's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanks Jamie! I am looking at going with Dr. Ramos Kelly. They give the option of either Clinica San Juan or hospital Angeles in Tijuana. My husband and I are leaning more towards the hospital. But I'm not sure yet. -

SELF PAYERS...please give me your insight
Salinagetssleeved replied to SHANA55's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This website that you're on right now could probably make you feel a lot better if you read through posts in the Mexico & Self-Pay forums. Hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands?) of Bariatric Pal members have been to Mexico for surgery. Bariatric Pal is even affiliated with several surgeons in Mexico to offer special deals and packages to members. I didn't go through Bariatric Pal for my surgery, but I did read lots of posts here when researching and choosing a surgeon. I've been to Mexico twice for surgery. Once for plastics, and once for my sleeve. Both were incredibly positive experiences. As long as you do your research and choose a reputable surgeon, you have nothing to fear. The level of care you can receive in Mexico is on par or better than what you would receive in the US. Certainly, when I went for my plastics, I had a much higher level of care than I could have possibly had in the US. I had 24/7 nursing care for two full weeks and daily visits from my surgeon. In the US, I would have been sent home one or two days post-op to fend for myself and maybe seen my surgeon once or twice in the two week period after. For my sleeve, it was a much more minor surgery, so I was discharged back to my hotel the day after my surgery. A shuttle picked me up from my hotel and took me back to the clinic each of the next two days for follow up (barium swallow test, having my drain removed, etc.). And then I flew home on the 4th day post-op. The area in Mexico where most of the medical tourism happens is a very high-class neighborhood with excellent accommodations and amenities. It's RIGHT across the border from San Diego (seriously a 10 minute drive if you don't count the traffic at the border crossing). It's pretty much exactly like being in the US. A McDonald's and Starbucks on every corner. The clinic where I had my plastics, I had a lovely view of an Office Max from my room.... I stayed in a recovery house with on-staff nurses when I had my plastics. It was a lovely house in a gated community. When I had my sleeve, I stayed at the Marriott, which was a very nice, clean, upscale hotel with amazingly friendly staff. They accommodate dozens of WLS patients daily, so they have things like chicken broth and Jello from room service free of charge. As for pricing, it can definitely save you a LOT of money. The cheapest I've seen self-pay VSG in the US is around $12000. For my round-trip airfare, surgery, and hotel, I paid maybe a total of $7000? And I had my surgery with a world-renowned surgeon at a International Bariatric Center of Excellence. Remember, if you go with the cheapest option in the US, it's probably the cheapest option for a reason! do you mind me asking who you saw? -
thank you so much!!!!!
-
oh absolutely! Over the last few days Mexico seems like that is what my husband and I are leaning toward. I'm excited!
-
thank you so much ???? I'm not saying I'm going to do it, I'm just inquiring
-
do you mind me asking who you saw? well you sure are lucky that you only had to pay $4,000!!!! I'm sure if you had to pay the $21,000 like most of us, you probably would not have had it done!!!!!! Lucky girl!!Luck has nothing to do with it. I've paid to have health insurance most of my adult life. And no, if I had to pay $21,000, I probably wouldn't have had it done. And I certainly wouldn't have started a GoFundMe to have people pay for it, either, because it's not everyone else's problem I couldn't pay for it. I'm so sorry to hear you feel that way

who did you see dear?
-
thanks doll And if you can't afford it, maybe you shouldn't be buying it or begging for money to buy it and realize that sometimes we can't all get what we want? But that's just crazy talk. did you pay for yours on your own? I assume you have had it done

Yes. Reminds me of this article I just read http://nyti.ms/1WCZ4kT As someone with the keen observational skills of Mr. Magoo, it took me a long time to notice a problem social-media acquaintances had been talking about for months. “I woke up to four new people today asking me for money on four different donation platforms,” one friend said. “One was my ex-babysitter announcing her wedding and where I could send cash. No invitation to the wedding. Just cash.” “I’m a believer in giving to real charities: medical research, school drives, the Red Cross, et cetera,” said Heidi Knodle, owner of a picture framing store in San Francisco. “I’m tired of people asking for a vacation, funds for a wedding or their college tuition.” The crime writer Mark Ebner, whose mailboxes have been increasingly filled with monetary requests, has a theory about it all. “I think online begging has become the new economy.” I thought my friends were exaggerating. After all, a visit to GoFundMe or YouCaringyields site after site of worthy donation recipients. People whose homes were wiped out by natural disasters. People with diseases I’d never heard of, with no insurance and staggering medical expenses. Kids trying to pay for their parents’ funerals. Parents with seriously ill children wanting a trip to Disney World, and sick animals owned by people who couldn’t afford the vet bills. One man had set up a fund for a friend who needed to take a couple of months off while his wife died of brain cancer. But then, there were others. Many, many others. Education funds are great, but do I really want to pay for a friend to travel to Peru to become a shaman? Should the woman who has lost a lot of weight (good for you!) ask her friends to pay for $2,500 worth of laser skin tightening? What about the girl seeking $600 for her “personal development journey”? (Not much to ask, but she was so beautiful, I didn’t understand why she didn’t develop herself into a model and make a whole lot more than that.) ......Here’s the question I can’t stop asking myself: Has social media made our craving for attention and validation overwhelm all other considerations? There is nothing new about asking your friends for help (remember rent parties?), but that help was confined to a small group of people you actually knew. Now, no such boundaries exist. Your 4,000 Facebook friends should know if you can’t pay your rent — or your plastic surgery bill. And who knows? They may just pay up. There was a time when there were needs, and there were wants, and we knew the difference. Now? Now I’m not so sure." People need to stop begging friends and family for money unless it is a life and death emergency. you are definitely entitled to your own opinion thank you so much!
