Anyone Had surgery outside of USA & Canada
Free2BMeforLife replied to Mychael's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Mychael, I haven’t had surgery yet but I will be going to TJ Mexico to Dr Kuri in the near future. I had planned on going to T.O but, the cost and experience my surgeon has made mr decide Mexico was the best choice for me. I'm paying 8500.00 and that covers everything accept my flight from Alberta. I already have a Dr here to do follow up and fills. Do a search on all of the band forums you can find on the DR in your area. Mine does fills Tues and Thurs and if you have any serious problems I'm to go to the hospital and give his name and he will come there to see me. I also found that travelling to Mexico if I need to see my surgeon is the same cost as going back to TO. He offers the same guarantee. Do your research ahead of time and I sure it will be fine. AS for the goverment chipping in, I know of several people who got back between 1000.00 and 1800.00 on their taxes for medical expenses. Its not much but atleast its something./font] Good Luck, ANNG -
Help! Im having second thoughts.

Hello I'm also from Canada and I am getting banded in Mexico. WE can wait 4 yrs on the waiting list. (if we're accepted) Go to Toronto and pay 16000.00 plus flights hotels and such (since insurance doesn't cover the lapband) or we can go elsewhere. Its half the cost in mexico and if you do your research theres some great docters there with lots of experience. Hell they trained the Docters in the states. AS for finding a docter in canada for your fills and any other issues, find one here before you go and have your surgury. I found one without any problem. He's only been trained in the lap band for a couple years but that pretty standard for docs in Canada. Good luck. Just do your reseach and stay positive. -
For those with BMI 35-40?
Free2BMeforLife replied to ronwifey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Jennifer, I know what you mean about people not understanding. My BMI is 36.7. I have friends I will never tell. Isn't that sad. What kind of friend does that make them... It will probably be many years before the myth if you're fat, you're lazy is disprove. But we can take heart in the fact that here in this forum we are not being judged. Its full of people who have shared experiences. Whether its about our health, hurtful words or our accomplishments and triumphs. Stay positive and good Luck on your Journey. -
Hi Tracie, I'm not banded yet. (end of February) :biggrin:I've done alot of reaserch and spoke with several docters. Seems like the band is a good choice for PCOS. Exspecially those who don't lose because of IR. Because the band limits what we eat it automatically lowers the carbs we eat, which is what starts the cycle of IR. WE are told that we need to eat protien first, Therefore we souldn't have room for many carbs. Also from what I understand Carbs like bread, Pasta, rice and pastry can be pretty hard to get down. So that helps limit our carbs as well. I don't think we'll ever totally understand PCOS or how the band is beneficial to us but so far the results look pretty promising. Hope this helped. Good luck. Staying positive is half the battle.

Hi Everybody, I'm Anngie ,I live in Alberta and I am 35 yrs old. I've been lurking around forums for a few months now and finally decide to jump in and say hello. The info here is great and so is the support you give each other. Been fighting with my weight since my early 20's. I was diagnosed with PCOS with insulin resistance last spring. My Dr said at this point WLS was probably my last option. Really happy to learn about the Lap Band, gastric bypas was to scary for me. Not banded yet still reserching DR. any good references for doc's in Mexico?? I look forward to chating with you all and learning from you experiences.

In this thread alone there is more info than any other I have found on this site. WE need to find away to make sure that we are easier to find. Add PCOS to our signature and mention it in your posts then when someone searches for Pcos they will find more than a few obscure messages. The band sounds like its the way to making our lives better and ultimately longer. Its like our own little miricle that losing weight is evan possible let alone being able to keep it off. Thank you Crishell and SElaine you've given me hope and more determinatio to have this surgury.

Hi Tawnya, I am also self pay. Its not really covered in Canada. I've decided to go with Dr. Ortiz in Mexico. Apparently he doesn't have the greatest bedside manner, But he's a master at what he does. Its going to cost me half of what it would have in Canada. The biggest thing is to make sure you have a fill Dr. or clinic that will take out of country patients. Good luck.

Hi Everyone, I'm Anngie, I live in Alberta Canada. I am 35, married 11 yrs, 2 boys 10 and 16. Also a Shitzu and a Chihuahua. After lots of research I decide yesterday, I am definately getting Banded. ( Dr. Ortiz in Mexico ) Glad to meet so many people my age going through the same challenges and supporting one another. Although I am self centered enough that looking good is a huge motivation for me, Feeling good is a bigger motivator. I have PCOS, 3 of my aunts have/had PCOS and all have diabetes or heart problems caused by the excess weight. I'm aready on inhailers and have insulin resistance and the buck stops here. :clap2:Time to get healthy. Peace, happiness and "WILLPOWER" to everyone.

So glad I found this post. You are not alone in your worries. I have PCOS with insulin resistance. My doc put me on Metaformin it stoped the weight gain but even with a healthy diet and a personal trainer 5 times a wek I still haven't had any luck. WLS surgery was my DR. idea so I have to hope she knows what shes talking about. Not that I haven't been doing tons of research on my own. Either way PCOS and the Band will be my first Question at my consult. Good luck to you. And All us PCOSers should keep each other posted on our progress.
