    Sleep Apnea & surgery

I had general anesthesia and was intubated for surgery. That means I was on a ventilator. I don't know if that is standard practice or not but I think it is. So the problem would not be during surgery, but after when you are sleeping. My husband has a bipap machine and has had many surgeries. He has to take his machine with him any time he is in the hospital. Besides the typical problems known to be associated with sleep apnea, it could also make you higher risk for developing post op pneumonia, especially if you are really sleepy post op.
  2. Every person is different. I had a lot of nausea, too. The compazine suppositories my doctor prescribed really helped. I tried to sleep it off as much as I could, too. Make sure you are staying hydrated! Just small frequent sips if that is all you can do right now.
  3. I was nauseous the first day and a half post op. Adequate pain relief with liquid Vicodin and motrin. Day 3 I was out working (gently) in the garden.

    What did I do?

Hope you're feeling better soon! I'm just a day ahead of you as I was banded 5/21. I can't wait to advance my diet Wednesday! I'm feeling waterlogged.

    LapBand Food Stages Lists Suggestions

*STAGE 1 - LIQUIDS START: When you return home from your surgery DURATION: For 2 weeks post surgery, or until your next dietitian appointment. DIET: Clear and full liquids GOAL: Aim for at least 64 ounces of fluid for the day by continuous sipping. This is pretty similar to my docs recommendations, with the addition of thinned refried beans and scrambled eggs added to the full liquid phase. My question for those who are on similar restrictions for the first 2 weeks (once on full liquid) do you partake of any of the items below any time of day? My diet suggests the full liquids (1/4 c) only for 3 meals a day, with sugar free liquids the rest of the day. I AM STARVING!!!! LIQUIDS RECOMMENDED: Water 100% Fruit Juice (No sugar added) Bouillon Strained soups or broths Skim or 1% milk Soy milk Milk Shakes - thinned Gatorade or equivalent sports drink Yogurt Smoothie Drinks - not including homemade Crystal Light Sugar free beverages Herbal or decaffeinated tea or coffee Popsicles (Pedialyte)
  8. I have not discussed PS with my lap band surgeon or the bariatric coordinator. From previous weight loss attempts I know that I may want to consider neck and breast lifts after I reach goal.

    Weight watchers - Anyone else?

Hello everyone Glad to see this thread. I've been a yo-yo dieter most of my adult life. WW has worked well for me. Most recently I lost 70 lbs, then gained back 80. I was just banded on 5/21. My surgeon recommends WW combined with lap band because WW teaches healthy lifestyle. I was hoping there would be other WW people here!

    Tomorrow's my band-day!!!

I had quite a bit of nausea. Once that cleared I was up and about more. Not much trouble at all with gas pain. I feel fortunate about that.

    300 :(

I was slow waking up from the anesthetic. Then the barium swallow triggered some nausea which lasted most of the rest of the day. Surgery was 8am and I was glad to be home by 530. Feeling much better today. Just sore.
  13. carifowler: First off, congratulations on getting this far! The preop diet is certainly not an easy thing to do but there are reasons for it. The important thing is that you are able to "get back on the wagon" right away. I've had the same questions as you regarding the pre op diet. I certainly did not do it perfectly myself. If I was perfect I sure wouldn't be here! I chose my physician because I trust him to guide me in the best way he knows possible. This morning I was banded almost 10 lbs lighter!

    300 :(

You are not alone! I experienced many of the same feelings you described. I think my 6 month waiting period turned out to be a good thing because it gave me plenty of time to get myself prepared mentally for the changes I would be making. Got banded today.

    Tomorrow's my band-day!!!

Way to go HealthyGrandma. Glad to hear your home and doing well. I got home about 530 this afternoon myself! Just awoke from a little nap & feeling a little bit better. Best wishes to you!
  16. "I read everything I could find on pre-op diet cheating, trying to justify it to myself. If I would have just followed the diet I could have avoided so much grief and stress!" Did you have problems surgically due to not following the pre-op diet? Or are you referring to the grief and stress that is typically experienced when our eating is out of control? Just curious. I have not been perfect on my 14 day liquid diet () but will have a loss.

    Anyone pay out of pocket?

My husband hopes to have his surgery soon. We decided after having a terrible experience dealing with the bariatric coordinator in Peoria, IL that we would just pay out of pocket for him rather than go to SFMC where he would be covered. Here is what we have found in central IL: Galesburg - Cottage 38000 Moline - Trinity 16000 Peoria - Methodist 12000
  18. I was denied twice before appealing and then approval.

Hi Karri I'm in Galesburg, too. I'm having surgery this Wednesday. Good to hear you've done well. Maybe I'll see you at support group sometime.

    Tomorrow's my band-day!!!

I'm scheduled for 8am Wednesday! Best wishes to both of you.
  21. Yep, there I said it. I have cheated. Somewhere in between "healthy foods" and a food fest. I am scheduled for this Wednesday and have been on the liquid diet at least half of the past two weeks. I won't be seeing a 15 lb wt loss. Probably between 5-10lbs. (Due to start my cycle any day now & I typically retain a lot of Fluid.) I'll spare you from hearing my excuses as I'm sure you've experienced them all yourselves sometime in the past. I am so looking forward to the day when I can eat a normal amount of food and actually feel full.
  22. Hello, Newbie here. I've been to a seminar, nutritionist, & evaluation. Now just waiting for approval. BCBS requires 6mo supervised diet but my bariatric coordinator thinks do to my previous weight loss attempts that are documented in my medical history I may not need to wait that long. We'll see. I'm getting kind of nervous. This is such a big step. I know how to lose weight. I've lost 50, 60, 70 lbs before. Many diets. I just can't keep it off. Are there many people around the forum who have had their lap bands long-term? More than a couple of years?
