I wish someone here in KC would get Ctr of Excel accreditation. I just talked to Dr Hornbostle's ofc and she said you must to come to seminar (next one Feb 6) ,get their papers to fill out,get Dr records and then they are making appts for MAY for your 1st consult. Thats not even getting the surgery scheduled. Thats a BUMMER!

I have been on a 1 1/2yr journey here. Was on last pscyh (sp) appt..my insurance was going to pay, then Medicare approved the surgery. Dr wasnt with a CTR OF EXCELLENCE and nowhere in KCMetro was. The search was on. I kept waiting for somewhere here local to be designated. But NO!! So...now I am going for the seminar in Sedalia, that is about a 2 hr drive for me. But I have waited long enough. Am afraid I will die before somewhere in KC is approved. SO my question is,who has used Dr Hornbostle?? Any tips with him and his office, is there anything I can do ahead of time so I can be ready to go? Or does anyone have any inside info of a Dr in the KC area getting approved for Medicare? Thanks so much

I talked to a Dr office in the south part of Kansas City that is hoping to get approved by Medicare very soon. I am on there waiting list I can get the number for you. I was in the process in February, my secondary was going to pay then Medicare said they would cover. BUT, I had to have a "Center of Excellance" do it. Now I am at square one. The Dr in south KC is the best news I have had!

I was in the process of getting ready for lapband surgery earlier this year at Shawnee Msn Hosp by Dr Stanley Hoehn. Then Medicare made their ruling and they are my primary insurance. Everyone at that office was very nice.

United Healthcare's contract with ATT will cover Lapband. It's not really the Insurance company that determines the coverage though. It is the contract that the Employer has WITH the Insurance company. Good Luck. -

I have UHC as my secondary and we were ready to go and approved until Medicare popped up in February and said they would pay for WL Surgery. Just curious. Who did your surgery and at what facility? How long did you stay in Hosp. after surgery? What was your beginning weight? I agree with everyone else. You need to RUN!!! to the doctor. Keep us posted.... -
I am here in Ks. I am in the begining stages getting scheduled for Lapband surgery. I have chosen Dr Hoehn at SMMC. Today I went on my 3rd visit to the psychologist and have some concerns I will discuss with him next week. Read some scary stuff tonite on the kcbariatric website, there is a link to read reviews of the hospital and the Dr. All good stuff on Dr Hoehn, which was great. BUT, the night nurses at SMMC sound like the nurses from HELL. Some of the posts were 2-3 yrs old so I hope the staff have read these and cleaned house! I am excited about having surgery and am learning some things. Specifically that I dont think I get enough protein in my diet. Which might be why I am SO hungry at night. Hummm Looking forward to hearing from other Kansas Sunflowers!

I am from KS also. Just went to a seminar this week. Husband went with me. They had 5 patients there that had weight loss surgery. Only one was a bander. She had lost 20lbs in 3 months I think. Seemed kinda slow to me. Is that a normal weight loss for that time period? The others had gastric bypass and RouinY (something like that) and had lost SO MUCH more. But that sounds so invasive. I prefer the lapband because its not as invasive. I have to fill out my paper work and get sent in now to start the process. I need to check in here more often for encouragement. Anyone used the Bariatric Ctr at Shawnee Msn???

New Kansasan Looking for Friends/Support

Hello all, I am a newby. I have thought about some type of WL surgery for several years. Lap Band seems the least invasive so I am considering it. I met a lady Friday that had Lap band in April, she has lost 70 lbs. She said the first couple weeks were rough but worth it. I have an appt for a seminar Oct 25 at the Marriot thru the Midwest Bariatric Ctr. Hubby is going with me. My only concern is I am on Medicare and the doctor wont take that, but the office says medicare will pay for hospital and anesthesia. I do have a secondary ins. and am hoping they will pick up the cost.Any thoughts on that?? I am 50 yrs old & have been overweight most of my life. Have type 2 diabetes,HBP,joint problems, disc problems, depression. Am sick of taking so many meds. and sick of not being able to walk 1/2 a block. Am in fear of dying if I dont get this weight off. Sorry this is so long. But now I'm out there!
