Unflavored protein powder
aaonthego replied to glitterpockets's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use Syntrax Nectar and Genpro unflavored powders to mix into soups, broth, refried beans, etc. For shakes and such, if you haven't tried UMP, they are my favorite flavored protein powder. For ready made shakes, I like premier protein although (tmi) it sometimes gives me diarrhea. -
Sugar free Popsicles and chicken broth can help you with your fluid intake for those first few days.

Cool! Thanks!

Home alone after surgery
aaonthego replied to Tweety40's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sleeve was an outpatient procedure. The first 2 days were rough for me and I was glad to have my sister and friend with me. By day 3, besides being a bit weak, I was able to manage by myself. -
Tape measure moves, scale not so much
aaonthego replied to Emilie.Lancaster's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it makes you feel better, I was sleeved on 12/11. I lost 9 lbs in the first 7 days and stayed stuck bouncing up and down the same 1lb until yesterday when I weighed and whoosh down 6 lbs from one day to the next. -
I would be totally psyched if by month 4 I was down 50lbs! I'd say focus on exercising (if you're not already), especially strength training so that even if the weight is not coming off as quickly as you like, you can take comfort in knowing that you are toning and minimizing loose skin.

I feel very weak and tired… I am getting about 70 grams of protein in, but need a boost
aaonthego replied to Scottyd1264's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Especially the B-12 vitamin for energy. That's the only one my surgeon cleared me to start at 1 wk post op. The others, he wants me to wait until 1 month post op. -
Hello! I'm about 2.5 weeks post-op and am currently in the purée phase. With the guidance to avoid eating and drinking at the same time, I'm wondering what people do first in the morning? I'm usually thirsty when I wake up so I find myself drinking first thing in the morning. But with my morning schedule/routine, that often means that I don't get around to eating until 2 or 3 hours after I've been awake. So do you eat or drink first? And any arguments for/against doing one over the other?

Hospital Experience
aaonthego replied to Deneshia Larkins's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was at 10:30am and I was discharged around 4pm the same day. Energy level was very low after surgery, but I wasn't in any pain per se. I was able to walk short distances inside the recovery area and to the bathroom to potty (using it alone) within an hour or so after surgery. When I was discharged, I did have my sister and a friend stay with me the first night ( my surgeon required that I not be alone the first night). Since I was an outpatient, I didn't really need anything besides my loose fitting clothes. I was in a hospital gown while as soon as I arrived and had it on until right before being discharged. Good luck! -
Is it unwise to have the gastric sleeve surgery without medical insurance?
aaonthego replied to citylights310's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I imagine you've done thorough research and have valid reasons for wanting to have the surgery and foresee enough benefits to make the normal risks of surgery worth it. If it makes you feel better, look for some sort of complication coverage as one of the other posters mentioned. Every surgical procedure ( elective or not) has risks. Do your research before selecting a surgeon and a surgery center and follow the pre and post op instructions to a T to minimize your chances of complications. They do happen but are very rare - i believe less than 1%. You can't not proceed because of the fear of complications. Good luck! P.S: I am 2 weeks post op and was a self pay patient here in Ohio, I had some of the same concerns you're having. -
The only one who needs to understand it is you! Merry Christmas and good luck!

3 days post op and I feel GREAT... is something wrong?
aaonthego replied to Scottyd1264's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think everyone just reacts differently to anesthesia. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones. I was downright miserable for the first 2 days post-op. Then by day 3, I started feeling better. -
My surgery was on the 11th. I lost 10 lbs in the 5 days after surgery, and nothing since. I know it's not a stall. But I'm choosing to keep weighing daily to use this as an opportunity to train myself to not to be so emotionally dependent on the number (easier to do at this stage when it's almost certain that the loss will come if I stick to the plan).

Besides following your specific plan , stock up on SF Popsicles. These were a lifesaver for me the first few days of the liquid diet which for me were the toughest.

Vanilla Protein powder/drink
aaonthego replied to baileyj908's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know about tasting like a milkshake, but my favorite vanilla protein powder is UMP Vanilla. I recently tried the premier protein vanilla RTD and I liked the taste too. -

Back to work. How soon?
aaonthego replied to Ginger1217's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I probably could have gone back to work if needed at 5 to 7 days post-op. But I'm taking 3 weeks off. There were times during the first week where I could only be comfortable reclining. Not sure what your office setup is like, but if you're feeling well and have access to a reclining chair or bed like in a health center/clinic in case you need it, then go for it. -
Like others have said, when I've lost weight in the past, I usually lost a shoe size as well. So I'd expect no different losing weight this time. If they're not so expensive shoes, then I say go ahead and get it. If they are super expensive keep them for years shoes, then I'd wait to be closer to goal weight to see what the feet are going to do.

Good idea to use the reintroduction of different foods in the coming months to figure out any sensitivities.
