Question. Have any RNY patients had any complications with their sphincter of Oddi? And if so have you undergone an ERCP for diagnosing and treating this? I’ve been having ongoing bouts of intense right upper quadrant abdominal pain that can at times be extremely debilitating, as well as some abnormal LFTs, I’m scheduled for the procedure in about two weeks. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also were you able to have it done endoscopic or did you have to have it done laparoscopic? My doctor is going to try endoscopic although it may have to convert to laparoscopic. Did this procedure/treatment work for your symptoms? I did have my gallbladder out about a year before my RNY surgery. I’m nervous to have another surgical procedure, especially with so many unknowns about it. I understand that it is a very individualized procedure and every patient will have different recovery time. It’s just driving me nuts that most of these questions cannot be answered until I actually have the procedure!

I am 19 months post op, and I have to say the last couple of months have been extremely difficult food wise. I am pretty much ALWAYS feeling hungry and I am losing the battle on the nighttime munching and eating! The feeling is really acute at night when I am supposed to be going to bed, I try drinking water and waiting but that isn't working anymore. When I do cave and give in to the feeling I do try to stick with a high protein food and something that is healthy, yogurt or cheese and fruit, sometimes though this isn't enough. I just don't know what to do. I've had my labs done recently and they all came back normal except for my vitamin D (extremely deficient), and my para-thyroid hormone had dropped some but I am no where near deficient for that. I am just frustrated and stressing out about this. In the last few months I have regained about five pounds, which I know is normal but is not what I want to be doing. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to beat the late night hunger monster?

I didn't start feeling like myself again until about 10 weeks post op. I had a bit of a rough recovery and was sick for a long time. I would touch base with your team but I don't think it's that unusual to still be feeling like that. I also say this as I've talked to two other women who also had bypass and who also felt lousy for a while after. I'd touch base with your team but I think as long as you are getting your vitamins, water and protein in you will steadily improve. Then one day out of no where your energy returns and you start to feel good then better then great! I hope this helps you a bit. That first couple of months is brutal. Just think of all you've been through and don't be too hard on yourself. You've made a positive decision and choice. You will feel better.

Birth control after gastric bypass...
alishams86 replied to Ready2LoseIt213's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi baconsher, I did have great weight loss with the nexplanon. However I unfortunately had to have it removed due to severe bleeding issues with it. I've moved on to the Nuva ring and so far am still losing at a steady pace with that. How far out from surgery are you? I'm slightly over seven months and have noticed a bit of a slow down in my weight loss, but it's really hard to compare to other people as everyone is so different. I did have a brief period where I didn't have any weight loss for a month while I still had the nexplanon in but it was a side effect of a medication my surgeon put me on for persistent nausea. I had the nexplanon removed mid June and feel like I am still losing at about the same pace as I was before so I haven't really noticed a difference from before to after. I hope this rambling helps some. It's so hard to say. But don't get discouraged! Everyone loses differently. As long as you are feeling good and have energy and are still losing I think you will be fine. I think I'm losing about 10 pounds a month now. Although I can honestly say I have no idea what the average is supposed to be. I had to stop comparing myself to others because I was driving myself batty. I had to realize this is my journey and I need to follow it in a way that works for me. I figure as long as my labs numbers are good and I feel good as long as I eat healthy and can exercise I'm not going to focus too much on the scale and worry about what the "normal" is. This my my new normal and some days it's a real trial but I'm getting it worked out. Again sorry for the long winded post. I hope it helps some! Good luck and I am sure you are doing great on your journey! -
I had surgery 12/7 and since then I have lost 36 pounds. I feel like I should have lost more by now. I also feel like I've been stuck at this current weight for ever! I've made an appointment with my NUT and have started keeping a food diary again but I just feel like I am doing something wrong. I could defiantly do more on the exercise front and with it starting to warm up more I'm adding more activity to my life I just feel like I'm missing something. What is the normal weight loss for 14 weeks post op?

Birth control after gastric bypass...

I've got the nexplanon (implant) and I love it! Before surgery I was on the pill but worried about after surgery and being able to swallow pills and absorption so I got the nexplanon inserted about two months prior to surgery. My first period after surgery dragged on for weeks! It was nuts. The first week of my period I had bad cramping but after that it was just an annoyance to have to deal with. -
I had surgery on 12/7 was first expecting to be out for two weeks, however was still pretty sick at my post op on 12/22 and got another two weeks off. Now I am still experiencing near constant nausea and vomiting at least once a day. I am supposed to return to work on 1/4 however that may be delayed if I can't get past this hurdle. I just can't imagine going to work when I am feeling so lousy. One positive is I've been able to up my fluid intake, very slowly though. Could use more protein but tend to get sick with that. So just taking it one day at a time.

I'm about six days away from my surgery. Scheduled 12/7. I've been on the preop liquid diet for over a week now and I am hating it. My stomach is no longer hungry but my head is like we need steak! I've tried adding more protein, having more of the allowed foods and drinking water. I hate soups and honestly the thought of eating a soup right now makes me even more nauseous. How do I get past this part? I know it's worth it and I know it is working but it's sooooo hard! Does anyone have any suggestions for other foods for this preop phase? I'm so close and don't want to fail now, but I am slightly bored and nauseated from the few choices I have right now!

My advice working in healthcare if you re waiting that long for a reply, go straight to the office and ask to speak to someone. And try your hardest to find a new pcp, if the practice you were with has other docs they should be able to assign you to someone new. Just be the thorn in their side until they do. You are your best advocate!

Very First Nut Visit
alishams86 replied to Gethealthy2016's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can do it. All those numbers can and will be fixed by all the hard work you put in. Just take it a day at a time. I started with high blood pressure is the 140/90 and now my BP is down to 116/69 and that is just with the pre op weight loss and life style change. Hoping after surgery will be able to ditch those BP meds for good! You can do this. Just think of your long term goal to be healthy and have the best possible lab numbers possible! Best of luck! -
Anyone else having surgery in December?
alishams86 replied to ShrinkingButtercup's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
December 7! Excited, nervous, scared, enthralled, ready to run in the other direction and have a juicy prime rib and pizza with a Mai tai! But overall ready. To be healthy, have clothes fit right, be able to enjoy my body instead of feeling like its hindering me. Looking forward to it! I've worked this hard, never been so proud of myself. We can do this! -
So yet again I find myself here talking about my ass.

The Strawberry is horrible. Try Classic Chocolate in a glass or Fairlife milk for a real treat! I've been using airline and lactaid milk. I've gotten the chocolate splendor from unjury and I do like it but I am a dark chocolate fanatic! The Strawberry is horrible. Try Classic Chocolate in a glass or Fairlife milk for a real treat! Depending on where you live you may also want to check out Vitamin Shoppe and GNC. They both have membership cards although you pay for GNC's. The coupons and discounts make it worth it. If you buy something you don't like, it's easy to return with a receipt.I will look into that! As much as I enjoy the ones I have now I am tiring of them! -

Scared to finish the process
alishams86 replied to cparni's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. I'm a little under a week before my surgery and I am still scared to death. I know I am making the right decision and that for my health this is the best thing for me to do, but it's still scary as hell. It's all so overwhelming. My suggestion is to rely on your team. Rely on your supports and just know that you can do this. Little steps help. Taking it moment by mementos. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself the time to adjust. Ask as many questions as you can think of. If your program offers a support group GO TO IT! My support group is a mixture of pre and post ops and I know I can rely on them for any questions. They understand the fears. It is so very overwhelming and you will want to quit many times but keep plodding along and you will get there. It's a huge life change but a change that is worth it for YOU! You can do this just remember baby steps be kind and gentle with yourself. Believe me! -
How much did you weigh when you got pregnant?
alishams86 replied to eep1616's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Honestly give your body time to heal from this surgery and change. My surgeon recommends waiting about 12-18 months. Once you have gotten to that point your body may surprise you and be rearing to go in fertility. But to give yourself the best chance at a healthy pregnancy I would wait the recommended amount of time. The goal is always a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. I work in an on/gyn clinic and we have had successful pregnancy in patients with weight loss surgery but it's really important to give your self a chance to adjust to this new life first! Then you will be the healthiest you can be for a normal healthy pregnancy and that perfect healthy baby! -

I've been using quest nutrition banana cream. It's been one of the best I've tried so far and less than 2grams of sugar per serving. I've also been using Tera's whey dark chocolate which is fantastic. The quest has I think 21 grams of protein per serving and the dark chocolate has 20. I also have some unjury on hand, chocolate and vanilla as well as the multipurpose quest protein powder. I've found that I absolutely cannot mix the proteins with water. I have to do them with milk. I am still preop so this may change post op. I've spent hours scouring Amazon for deals on protein powders and so far in my opinion the quest has been a great deal. I'll be ordering a few more of the flavors they have. I tried the unjury strawberry and it went straight down the drain as the smell of it was terrible could not bring myself to actually sip it! -

Yes! I can have popsicles and I am having one now. Actually starting to feel a bit better. No idea why I forgot about them! Just so much in my head! Thank you!
