I had gastric bypass 14 years ago. I lost and have maintained a 250 lb weight loss. There are times that I am glad I took the step because I can do things that I've never been able to do. I'm an avid swimmer and a so so runner. The ugly side is that I have had complications since 2003. First was a intusseption (sp) with a perforated ulcer and an extremely diseased gall bladder. I almost lost my life because my surgeon kept telling the hospital I wasn't his patient. Since that surgery, I have had 14 more abdominal surgeries.....hernia repairs, bowel obstructions, sphintoplasty because the surgeon damaged my sphincter of oddi when he removed my gall bladder, biliary catheter for 8 mos, removal of infected mesh from hernia repair, removal of shifted mesh. During these surgeries it was discovered that the initial surgeons did not properly staple off my stomach and I have a gastric fistula which has resulted in my having reflux which I did not have prior to surgery. They also did not properly tack down part of my roux limb and it started folding over causing blockage. I have no abdominal fascia, just prosthetic mesh which bease there was no tissue left, they had to sew it to my hip bones and ribs. The mesh causes pain. I have had a component separation on both sides (cut side muscles and pull them across to reinforce abdomen.) Now I am experiencing unexplained nausea and vomiting. Doc says that's pretty much the way it will be. Having trouble accepting that.....having trouble accepting all of this.
