After 4 month, still slimming after eating...
My1way replied to ZillyNa's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't remember when slim vomit was not an issue for me, but just last week it happened again when I drank a coke from a can. It also seems to happen when I don't chew well enough. I am 1 year out. -
Taste varies with everyone and sometimes tastes changes after surgery. Don't stock up before surgery. Instead go to places like GNC and get several single serving packages. The prices are higher, but you will get an idea what tastes good to you. I had decided pretty quick that I hated protein drinks until I got the idea of mixing the flavors! Now I will mix chocolate with vanilla, then add half a spoon of instant coffee. This tastes like Wendy's Frosties. You can mix chocolate with banana, vanilla and strawberry, there is no limit to the mixes. Measure 1/2 scoop of each. I always blend the mix with ice in the blender, but shaken with ice is not bad either. My favorite protein mix brands are Unjury any flavor and Click coffee. There are several companies that will send samples for free if you contact them (phone, email, or snail mail)

Is is safe to have any kind of WLS after Fundoplication surgery?
My1way replied to Hiraeth's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had Fundoplication surgery many years ago (I don't remember exactly), but I had vertical sleeve one year ago and there is no problem. Pretty much, what I understand, Fundoplication pulls the top part of the stomach down below the diaphragm (I think) and it is basically to stop serious indigestion. The vertical sleeve takes off the huge balloon part of the stomach, leaving a banana shaped tube going from the esophagus to the beginning of the intestine. I'm not a doctor so this is pretty simple explanation and may not be everything but what I am saying is a past fundoplication will not stop WLS. -
How long did it take you to reach a "new" normal
My1way replied to joei0005's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it was when I "forgot" about this forum! I still come back when I have a question and then I found I could answer some of the questions from newer WL people. Maybe about 4 months. -
Trouble getting protein and liquid requirement
My1way replied to gustavio's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told to drink 64 oz of Water per day. Impossible for me! I hate water and always have. I would manage maybe 24 oz per day. I don't recommend what I did, but just to let you know you are not alone. My doctor finally told me to count any liquid into that 64 oz requirement. I found sugar-free Popsicles. I made frozen popsicles from Protein drinks both creamy and clear. For protein powders, don't buy large canisters at first. You can get free samples from almost any maker, even buy them at GNC (single protein powder sizes). That way you will find what you like. I found mixing flavors helped. Mix chocolate and vanilla, coffee (Click makes good coffee flavor) and vanilla. I also use unjury. To me it tastes the best but Slim-Fast now makes a pretty good protein powder different from the original that was for Meal Replacement weight loss. When you mix the powders, use the blender, add ice, use half milk and water, add Peanut Butter powder, add flavored greek yogurt. Now at a year, I can pretty much figure out what works for me. I know to eat only when I am hungry and stop before I get full. -
That is horrible, I guess every medicine is going to give some people bad side effects. I am glad I was able to use them. They helped me so much especially in the beginning. I had hair falling out, cracked tongue, and thinning fingernails! If I couldn't use the patch, I think I would use Flintstones before the bariatric chewables, but keep an eye on your blood tests for all the nutrients you are missing.
-
I have always used the PatchMD. They are great. My levels are perfect and I hated all the chewable bariatric vitamins. A lot of people mention the Flintstones vitamins but the levels are not high enough according to the minimum levels I have seen. PatchMD always has 25 to 30% off offers.

Unjury is so nasty
My1way replied to myfatisnotaflaw's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love unjury. I look forward to it so much I could skip meals to just have a Protein shake! Try mixing the flavors. I also use Click coffee. My favorites are mixing 1/2 and 1/2 chocolate and vanilla, chocolate and coffee, vanilla and coffee. I also add a spoon of Truvia. Sometimes I also add half spoon of decaf coffee or whole coffee Beans in the blender with 1/2 Water and 1/2 soy milk. I think mixing things up is the secret to enjoying Protein drinks. -
Things you wish you had known before WLS
My1way replied to jodi2727's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
At almost one year out, my surprises are in stages. First stage in the hospital I was surprised at how normal I felt. It didn't hurt. Second stage 1st week home. I was lost! Everything was wrong! I couldn't stand the liquids! I hated Water, I despised the clear liquid Proteins, I couldn't tolerate the liquid medications, I didn't want to move! Third stage Being home and I must get something that I like to eat. I hated Protein drinks of all kinds! I hated liquid vitamins! I had cases of stuff I knew I would never use, I had slimy's all the time! You will know what that is, believe me! It is when you try to swallow something that doesn't want to go down - even liquid. I tried to swallow pills to keep from taking liquid meds, but it got stuck. I had to force myself to vomit it out.I went to the hospital emergency once because I could not stop the nausea, I thought I couldn't breath, I was afraid I was having a heart attack (I wasn't) Forth stage is it going to be okay? Starting to find things that taste okay and swallowing isn't that bad. I found I liked some baby food! Bananas and jars of meat. I could eat a couple of spoons of refried Beans and salsa. A couple of sips of soda (don't tell anyone) felt so good on my poor tummy. My hair was falling out, but I knew that wasn't permanent. I stopped worrying about water when I found Chai Tea. I found mixing flavors of Protein Drinks actually made them better (I use unjury chocolate and vanilla and Click Coffee) Mix chocolate and vanilla, mix vanilla and coffee, mix coffee and chocolate 1/2 and 1/2. Try half water and half milk, try adding a spoon of Truvia. Now I can go to a restaurant and not get worried; what should I order, I know I can't eat it all. I order appetizers. They are the best anyway and if I don't eat it all, they are meant to be shared. I cook for my husband, whatever he likes and I will either eat a few spoons or I will drink a coffee mix protein frappachino from my own blender! which I love! Surprises? I am surprised how good I feel, but it took a LONG time before I could say that! -
Anxiety about being almost one year post op
My1way replied to venomousflowers's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Although I didn't have as much to lose, I did not lose as much as I thought I should at one year. I called my doctor and asked what I could do. She suggested that I go back to day 1 eating and start there. Use two days for each week (week 1 liquids- decaf tea coffee, sugar free Popsicle, sugar free Jello, clear sugar free juice, broth) (week 2 full liquids - Protein powder with Water, thinned cream Soup, thin oatmeal, sugar free pudding, thin applesauce) etc. You know the drill. It takes a lot of will power, but it works. Don't forget to exercise and drink water and make your meals last at least 20 minutes. No water before, during, or after any meal - even with liquid meals. -

Do all Doctors require two week liquid preop diet?
My1way replied to Sleeved Nurse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My doctor didn't require a strict diet, liquid or otherwise, but the nutritionist told me it would give me time to find the Protein drinks and Vitamin choices before the real thing. You can go to GNC or other vitamin shops and get samples or try things. Also make calls to Protein Drink websites and request samples. The two weeks give you the time to do all of this and have it ready for when you get home. -
Battling Feelings of Shame
My1way replied to Jasley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jasley, I was so looking for someone like you! From the beginning, I decided that I did not want to tell anyone. I was proud of my choice and knew it would be my answer, but I was too embarrassed to admit I did not have the desire to complete the weight loss process without help. I needed that "rope", the tool, to hang on to and keep me moving. I haven't told anyone and don't plan to tell anyone. It is my choice, both the weight loss and the telling. The funny thing is that I had the surgery on September 11, 2015, I have lost 30 pounds, but no one has noticed! Maybe I really am invisible Like everyone, I had all the uncomfortable stuff right after surgery, but it is all gone now and I am so happy. I plan to tell someone, if they ever notice, that I am working hard at weight loss, which is true. -
Are you eventually able to eat anything?
My1way replied to heidikate's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can think I can tolerate anything now, but if I actually do it I often regret it. Just a couple of days ago, I went to Starbucks and got a Frappachino Grande. I use to get a Vente! By the time I was finished with the grande, I was miserable. I really wished I hadn't gotten it. It was a waste of calories, no Protein, and I felt ill. Today, I blended my own decaf coffee with chocolate Protein powder, ice and a splash of low fat milk. Perfect. There are alternatives. I still have slimys sometimes. Not often because I know when something hasn't gone down right and I am finished eating - right now! I have new tiny bowls and saucers. I use a beautiful antique baby spoon and even a sippy cup because I use to drink everything with a straw. Whatever works, right. -
If you weren't obese "all" of your life, what is it that caused you to become obese ?
My1way replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hard Hard question. I was thin as a child and young adult, Growing up next to the beach in Florida, my normal daily apparel was a bikini. I was not aware of my having an unusually large breasts. Duh? After I was married I noticed I would get a lot of male attention that made me uncomfortable. I had breast reduction but still felt like a flashing red light. After a divorce I went overboard and became a "bar fly" and band groupie. I finally remarried a wonderful man that appreciated me in everything I did. We have 2 children, then I stupidly had a brief affair and almost lost the best parts of my life. Then I decided that if I gained weight I wouldn't have to deal with the "admiring looks" and bad decisions. This became my life. Finally I went to see counselor and dealt with everything, my husband stayed, and I decided I wanted to be a pretty grandmother. -
Do you use PatchMD vitamin patches?
My1way replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I found PatchMD one night after a horrible weekend struggling with Vitamin deficiencies, vomiting, dread and fear of the taste of Vitamins I was told I had to take. The dry wafers taste like flavored chalk, the chewy ones taste like fake flavored tootsie rolls, the liquid vitamins taste like acid. PatchMD is the best for me. The first week I knew I had struck gold. The only problem is when I take a shower at the wrong time. I put the patch on in the morning, but if I decide I need a shower before bed, I may have to "waste" 1/2 of the patch. They are also cheaper than the vitamins I tried to take in the beginning. My tests have come back with super numbers all across the line. I even recommended the vitamins for my neighbor that is recovering from a transplant. -
Not feeling well at all
My1way replied to buzzly36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't get tired of the Clear liquids yet, they continue for a time after surgery. I was able to get through with clear broth. chicken was my favorite, but I also bought Soups with noodles and strained the noodles out. That was a bit of a different taste. I couldn't stand the clear Protein drinks - none of them. So what I did there was make my own Popsicle. Using a snack size zip lock bag, Mix the clear Protein Drink with a different flavor extract such as vanilla or pinapple. Almost anything frozen is better than just cold. One mistake I made was to rush food because I felt I needed more. Don't do it, it can hurt. I had bits of food get stuck. It caused pain like chest pain, hiccups, sweating, just miserable. -
I am almost 2 months out. Nov 11. I haven't gotten to the point of being glad glad I did this, just glad. It was a good decision because I needed help with thinking about what I eat, not so much how much. I was a grazer. Writing down what I ate during the day was nearly impossible; a few bites here, a few bites there, all day long. There are still things that physically bother me. Constipation and no energy mostly. I am looking forward and have goals, so I am motivated.

Bariatric Advantage Multivitamin Nausea
My1way replied to Stephielynn8's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A couple of thoughts about problems with the vitamins! When I think I am going to hate a taste, there is no convincing my tummy otherwise. I smell first and make that decision! I tried the dry chew-able tablets, the chewy candy type, and the liquid Vitamins. ICK! None of the gummy vitamins have enough of most of the requirements and you have to eat sometimes 4 a day. I was desperate and determined I would not take the vitamins. My tongue got horrible cracks, my skin and nails dried out, and all this in only a week or so. I had to stop on the side of a road and vomit when I drank a crystal light with a liquid Vitamin. Then, after staying up late in a last ditch effort, I found "PatchMD" Patches for vitamins. I have used them for almost 2 months, had great blood tests for vitamin, and no problems at all. They are less than $1 per patch. Google PatchMD and go for the multivitamins. All the vitamins are in them with at least 250% of all the requirements.
