  1. Mine is scheduled for the 31st - I am super nervous. I am so happy to be starting a new chapter but I guess I dont have as strong of a support system so I worry about how I am going to make it through the months after surgery. I have my husband... and he has been working on becoming healthier with me even though he is not overweight, I dont know why but I never really thought I didnt have a support system until i hit the liquid diet and realized that 90% of my "activities" with people revolve around food and just because I decided to change my relationship with food does not mean they will be open to other activities... I do have a support group I can go to once a week so I am going to utilize that, but yeah i am really nervous/anxious/happy/scared all at once.

    90 day diet questions....

@@catwoman7 That's really comforting to hear...I guess I really didn't think of the fact that they would "want my business" that's a good point. It is very expensive even with my insurance and I can not imagine going through this whole process paying for everything and not having surgery. Sheeeeesh that's a lot
  3. I really don't know anyone who has been through gastric bypass rny and I have so many questions about my pre-approval process. I have a patient advocate but I'm so nervous and fearful of not being approved. I really don't know what to do. I have a BMI of 40.5 and my 90 day diet will be up on January 23, I have Cigna health ins and they do cover bariatric with a 40 BMI and a 90 day med supervised diet. My physician does not normally do these things he refers patients to a nutrionist however I could not see a nutrionist bc they kept cancelling due to the holiday season. During my 90 days there has been no blood work no tests to see if I am diabetic or anything...just talks about my weight my excercise and mindful eating with notes each time. I have not lost any weight at all so far...and my physician is set to refer me to a surgeon. Once the surgeon sees me then they will file with my insurance ...I guess my question is has anyone had a similar experience? Did you get approved without having to run all those tests with your physician in the 90 day period? My surgeon will run tests of course, and I meet the minimum for BMI without any co-morbiditites... But I am afraid that I will not be approved bc I have not seen a nutrionist yet, just going to the Dr and talking about my weight loss attempts, with no actual weight loss. I wish I knew someone who had the surgery so I could ask things...but I don't. This support group is really my only outlet for this..

    90 day diet questions....

I do have the exact requirements from my insurance and they do require me to see a physician, and my physician has no idea what he is doing....he has to refer me to the bariatric center and they have assigned me a patient advocate who told me the general stipulation is to have my once a month clinic notes for every visit, and then once he refers me their center will do the rest. The answers are always vague from everyone, the advocate, the Dr, the ins company....I have no real dietary program other than watching my calories and talking about my current exercises... As for pulling record from a previous Dr...they could go all the way back to 5 yelrs ago but I had a good two hrs prior to this where I did not see any drs because I did not have insurance. So as of now I am waiting to be referred where I will meet with a nutrionis one time the surgeon will request some blood work, and I meet with a psychiatrist...then they submit for approval. ??? Is this abnormal?

    90 day diet questions....

Thank you! I know my surgeon is going to run some tests, but I really feel like my insurance is going to deny me, bc I am new to the state I live in and have only had a physician for 3 months and they want documentation my BMI has been 40+ for over two years...so I am prepared mentally I may have to appeal

  7. I am writing this because I feel a bit lonely in my journey and I wanted to see how many people had similar experiences before surgery and how they fared after surgery. I am in my 90 day pre-op diet and I have very little support because I have not been open with other people about my choice. I am a body positive activist and I fear backlash from the only friends I have who are also body positive but some are fat positive. My husband is the only one who knows my decision and even though he is supportive our relationship is so intertwined with food that it is very difficult to get him to understand I have a problem with food. I have an addiction and he still brings home things I'm not supposed to eat. Now I may have gained weight on my diet and I am scared I will be disqualified from surgery for gaining .... I have 15 days to lose any gains before my next appointment. I just don't want to share my journey yet. What if I am not accepted for the surgery? I also don't want to face the judgement and the constant explaining of why I had to go to surgery for help. I'm ready for the life changes, I am just not ready to share them with everyone. Did anyone else face a similar issue? If so when did you decide to share your journey? Pre or Post op and how did it affect you? I have more questions than answers right now, and I am feeling quite overwhelmed because I am confident in my decision but I don't need any negativity right now. I need a support system or a friend who understands and j find myself coming up short with people in my life that can be that. Any advice would help. Thank you!

@@Cervidae you just became my soul Twinkies just then. Both you and @@Ashlegal are so right..... I need to reflect and maybe I will tell someone...if I get some backlash on it I will deal with it then...maybe one person at a time.

@@Ashlegal thank you so much for that! Just knowing someone else has felt or does feel way helps me a lot. I don't even care about being skinny, I just want to be healthy....I am supposed to talk about a weight goal with my Dr. Soon and honestly that scares me too. I never started this journey to be small....I did it all so I could live a healthy life and I am finding more and more inner strength with time, but it definitely does feel like I am standing alone, and most if not all of my friends would react the way yours did. I don't need people in my life who don't want to accept my health choices, but I also don't want wls to be "who I am" either. I have one friend who had the surgery and it is 100% her life. She posts non stop, she works out 2x a day and when we are together it is all she talks about. I have not told her because I don't want it to become all I am, all I talk about ect. It's a choice, a lifestyle and I'm happy with that....I just want to still retain my own personality....like nothing has changed but how I approach food, and I will be smaller ....I'm not going to wake up and be a different person all together?
  10. Does anyone know if you are on a three month med supervised diet (Cigna) do you have to have monthly nutrional classes or meet w a nutritionist three times? Can you follow a "mindful eating & exercise" plan without that? I ask bc it is going to throw my ENTIRE timeline off bc I can't seem to find a NUT who will schedule me in ALL of Orlando for NOV/DEC!!!!

    Nut Requirements

Thank you all for your help, mine does not specify how many visits either ...I'm a little concerned I will be denied if I only go once but its so hard to get appointments Also I keep hearing some people say that I might be denied if I lose weight in my three month period? Are any of you losing weight on ur diet?
  12. Hello! I am new to this, and I don't really have anyone that I know who has had the surgery, or wanted to so I have so many questions and I'm hoping I can make some friends here who may be able to help! I started my diet on September 4th in preparation to see a see an obesity specialist --- I am in my pre-approval stage, I saw an obesity specialist on Oct. 2nd who took my weight and set me up with tons of testing, and information. She specializes in using methods other than surgery to help with extreme weight loss. I did not know that when ibsaw her, so I attended a bari-seminar and was assigned a patient advocate who told me the specialist I was working with does not recommend surgery for anyone - which is confusing bc she told me she thought it was a good option for me. Now she referred me to a family doctor and I am set to go see him this Friday Oct. 23 - My insurance calls for Three months of a medically supervised diet and I don't know what date to start from? Or even what the insurance calls for as far as a medically supervised diet? If I choose not to go with Jenny Craig or weight watchers, and just do the plan my Dr. and I agree on - does that count? Or do I have to see a nutritionist once a month too? I have an appointment with a nutritionist, but the dates will not line up exactly! I am so confused, and between the politics of the specialist, the patient advocate telling me that the diet starts the date the Dr puts in his notes and not to worry - I am worried and a little confused! Can anyone help?
  13. Thank you so so much! This is incredibly helpful!!!!!!!!!

    Cigna Insurance

@@SookieLei That's the exact info I needed! It's bittersweet bc my nut is so hard to get an appt with, but at least now I know that's what I have to do!
  15. Hello! I am new to this whole process, and I know this is really a pre-op ? For the other forum but since all of you have successfully had surgery, I felt like you may be even more helpful when it comes to asking insurance questions! Did anyone have experience with Cigna Insurance and their 90 day medically supervised diet approval process?
