Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?
retzlpa replied to choosehope's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
55 revised to bypass from lap band 10/26/15! Regret the lap band everyday and all the problems it caused including necessity of removal and revision to bypass! Was banded in 2010, and the Dr. Left to start practice in another state shortly after. I was left with no one to take care of my questions, concerns and problems. I suffered in hell, i threw up everytime I ate, had to eat around band to get nutrition. Finally 5 years later after a flare up in front of a new pcp, they thought I was having a heart attack in dr office. Took a ambulance ride and 3 days in ecu doing tests, found out lap band slipped up into esophagus, and was eroded in as well. Port had also turned. There was a ton of scar tissue to remove and the supposedly empty band had 11 cc's in it making that a real pain to remove. And just to show how much fun I had, the last 1/2 hour before I was released from hospital a nurse came in and gave me a shot in each arm, then explained to me it was a flu shot and a pneumonia shot. In the pre surgical prep I had declined these shots because I get sick from them. Anyway, the trip home from hospital is 45 minutes. Not halfway home I got ill, developed a fever. By the time I got home to bed it was 103.5. Called Dr., put ice packs all over to get temp down. As soon as ice came off, temp would go up again. Ice and Tylenol for a week. I'm now 6 weeks post surgery, just finally getting to gym to start exercising, and eating soft foods. I blame all of it on the lap band Dr.! But, I am trying to look at this better and hope the outcome works out well. Am sure I will need lots of support and counseling as well to forgive and move on. I will admit I have lost 45 plus pounds and can really notice difference. Especially tying my shoes! -
This is the start of my 4th week post surgery. So far, so good in most cases. I've had some ups and some downs. One thing that has bothered me and can't figure out is "why is my OLD stomach growling and gurgling so much?" It's not a problem that I need to seek medical care for, but it defiantly is annoying. Anyone else have this and find a cure or does it eventually go away?

So, my surgery was Oct. 26, 2015. Prep and postoperative total weight loss was fast and a lot! 45 pounds to be exact. Then November 11th I hit a dead stall. In fact I gained 3 pounds in 3 days. So I need some advice. Here is what I am starting Monday, November 30th. 1. I joined Planet Fitness and am going to go 3 to 4 times a week. 2. I'm thinking of going back to all liquid diet for 3 days to jumpstart, though I'm afraid that will sap my energy even more 3. Going to listen to fellow wls patients advice and ideas of what you have done and what not to do. I thank you all in advance! Feel free to be as open and honest as need be, for I may just need a kick in the pants!

I NEED to break this stall, help needed!

I'm getting in 80 or more g's of protein. I'm currently in the process the last week so starting over with vitamins. My stomach was getting upset when I took my meds. So I stopped all vitamins and just took my required meds I have been on for years. Then I started adding vitamins until I found the two culprits. The gallbladder meds and the B complex do a number on my gut! I am on soft foods and have also had ups and downs, i will never eat tuna or salmon ever again. I switched from soy milk as it gave me freight train farts, i now drink skim fairlife which is high protein, low sugar and no lactose. I walk everyday and lift light hand weights. It's too cold for me to continue walking outside and I need more exercise so i joined Planet Fitness and start tomorrow. So with all that, I guess my next move is nut or stay away from scale. -
Revising from band to bypass in December .Need support

Lap band 2010, problems from beginning. Finally had it removed and revised to rny on 10/26. Was a very difficult surgery and so far has been a tough recovery for me. I've kept a daily journal to remind me of this journey. I'm hoping someday I can look back without pain and be happy that I've healed and been successful. Even more so, I hope I can get over the anger I have for the Dr. that did the lap band then left me swinging in the breeze with no help. But anyway, each day gets better and some heal faster than others, so good luck and keep a journal and keep us all posted! -
Day 4 post op and could use some support

I was 3 weeks of feeling like elephant crap! I was good in hospital, cause the cathed me 2 or 3 times a day. The day i was leaving they gave me a flu and pneumonia vaccine. I got a fever in car on way home (45 minutes). I had a high fever for a week. Then the real kicker.......constipation! I felt like an over filled helium balloon. That took another 4 days to remedy. The only part I was really happy about was the huge weight loss [50 pounds], that is what got me through it all because frankly it is very unpleasant! All I can say is hang on, try not to lose hope, and find a way to celebrate and stay positive! If not for this website I probably would have found a rock to crawl under and gave up. -

I too gag from the smell of tuna now, also canned salmon. I'm only 4 weeks out, but am finding most food is unpleasant. Plus, when I do eat it seems I get constipated. The protein shakes give me horrible gas no matter what kind or way they are made. So I am frustrated!

Band Removal Approved; BYPASS DENIED!
retzlpa replied to Bobbe Schu's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
How strange! I had met my out of pocket deductible for the year, so i had nothing to pay. But I had to pay near $20,000 to get to that point. I personally think because my primary Dr. and WLS Dr. both wrote letters to the insurance company explaining my health situation (less than 5 years to live), and the cost to treat me, the insurance company could see the dollar signs involved. Just my thoughts! -
I think at that point, I would have, in front of so called friend, told your husband you would wait in car! And it's much more than weight with a booth, too short, bad back, etc. and how rude for this so called friend to be such a public asshole. I hope your husband is more supportive in the other areas of your wls journey

I think this is always a normal fear. If it is getting too much that you aren't sleeping because of it, then it's time to talk to someone, maybe get on an anti anxiety for a bit. Good luck, you will be in highly trained professionals hands before, during and after surgery!

I'm a little concerned about...everything!

I am 55 and aged well beyond my years. I had a lap band 2010 and it didn't work. Oct 26th I was converted to rny! It's been hard mentally and physically. I cried two days ago when I saw my face in the mirror. It looked gaunt and old, not the me I remembered. Then I remembered it's because I lost 40 plus pounds in a very short time. While we may look older initially, our bodies adjust quickly. So, keep your chin up and move forward, don't get discouraged when things get slow. A year seems long until it's passed and you are where you want to be! Good luck to all! -
A new hurdle crossed! A new beginning of hope, and life!

Where to begin? In 2010 I was 340 and miserable, felt as though I was standing on a cliff hanging on by my toes. I decided to check into bypass surgery as I had a friend who had been successful with it. My insurance covered a local dr and clinic. Well, this is where things went wrong! The Dr. was interested in treating me with the tenants newest, safest, fasted and longest lasting, easiest way to lose weight - the lap band. As many patients would do, I got behind the Dr. and was all in, gastric bypass was left in the dirt. So I went through all the meetings, the appointments, the counseling etc, then it was liquid Pre Op diet and a loss of 25 pounds through that, surgery was in October 2010. I followed the guidelines exactly, but something was wrong, I could feel it. I went in for a check and met with nurse practitioner not the Dr. I was given and adjustment, actually a fill, i found out much later it was filled too full. The next day I called the clinic and said nothing was going down at all. 5 cc's were removed and at clinic I drank some water and it went through ok. A few weeks went by with a me thinking I was just eating wrong, things would get stuck and I couldn't breath, I would have to drink water fast to either push food through or bring it to back up. While this was happening I received a letter from the clinic informing me that my Dr was leaving the clinic immediately, but the nurse practitioner would be there for a month or so still. I felt betrayed, my lap band wasn't working properly and the Dr and the clinic were now abandoning their patients. I called my insurance and no providers were found within 60 plus miles. I gave up, lived with the band in and learned how to defeat the band, still having things get stuck but most times I could push it through by drinking water. My family hated eating with me because it usually turened into a barf fest and ruined dinner for all. 2014 rolled around and I found a Dr closer, only 45 miles away, I made an appointment and went. The Dr was rude and told me I was eating wrong and so on and so forth. He removed all the fluid from band and told me when I was serious, then come see him again. There were no x-rays or exam of any type done. I left feeling low enough to crawl under a dime. I scoured the Internet for information, went to a soft food diet even. But things were so bad I would throw up with cold water even. December of 2014 I went to the Dr because I just felt terrible, weak, dizzy, tired all the time and intermittent chest pains. The Dr told me to lose weight. My wife got very upset and made an appointment at a different clinic with her Dr. January 2015 my wife and I went to my appointment. I told him of the chest pains I was having and was having right then in his office, they took an xray and an ekg. The ekg was not right and the xray showed possible blockage. Before I could finish the testing I got sweaty, dizzy and next thing I know, I woke up in the back of an ambulance. They suspected it was a heart attack. I spent three days in the ecu unit getting tests. It was found my lap band was positioned wrong and was causing issues similar to heart attack. It just so happened that a gastric specialist was working in the hospital for the week from mayo clinic. As the hospital had a policy of no gastric bypasses or weight loss surgery, he attempted to get a needle in my port which was turned, he pulled 6 cc's of fluid out on a band that was supposedly already empty. He told me I needed to have it removed as soon as possible. When my insurance company was contacted, they said that the UW Hospital was now in our network, I made an appointment, got in immediately and well.........here I am, 7 days away from having roux en y surgery and lap band removal. The education and nutritionists and Dr's and support has been overwhelming to me, I am so happy to know that I will now get this foreign body out of me, have the bypass and move on positively with my life and extending the time I have to live with family and friends. Sorry for the long post, but this morning when I weighed and realized I had broke the 280 mark I was extatic and felt free of the lap band monkey on my back. -
Night before last I started having a pain in my lower back, just below the rib cage. I take pain meds and it goes away. This is my left side, btw! Meanwhile also left side front is also very much painful. That pain has been there since I woke up from surgery, runs through the incision site to the new pain position in my back area. I lose my breath and Can't catch it back unless I sit up! Is it possible this is constipation related? Help!

A new hurdle crossed! A new beginning of hope, and life!

Well, I had the conversion surgery on 10/26! I woke up 5 1/2 hours after start of surgery in excruciating pain. My left shoulder felt as though it had been dislocated due to the position it had to be in for surgery, and the time length. There was a lot of scar tissue to deal with from the lap band, so i was quite bruised around the incisions. The left two incisions had so much swelling around them that they both looked like inee belly buttons! Talk about emotional, whew! I felt like the hoover dam had opened the first two nights. Then all of a sudden I had a smile, they let me walk on my own, I was able to pee without getting cathed, and fluids were going in me on my own. The next day they said I could go home, day 4! I was so excited! Just as we were getting in wheelchair to go down to car, nurse nasty shows up and says, we have two shots to give you before you go. So, boom, left arm, wham, right arm and a here sign this. What am I signing I ask, realizing was already too late! Consent and understanding risks of flu and pneumonia vaccine! Oh no you didnt? I already had this conversation prehospitilization and refused both shots. I refused to sign and was pretty upset. Got down to car in tears and told my wife, she went in and conversed with nurse who delivered me to car. I live 50 minutes from hospital. By the time we got home I was sick, temp over 101. Called Dr pager number and he called back within 10 minutes. Told him the problem and he too was not pleased. He or a nurse called every 2 hours as my temp spiked to102.5. Then after 4 days it broke and I was weak but felt good. This morning I stepped on scale and was 251lbs. I see dr. tomorrow morning and I'm happy happy happy! I hope the devil has realized he lost and moves on. I finally feel good! -
So exited - I had lap band removal and converted to rny. Was a lot of scar tissue from lap band and port, so some of pain is that I'm sure

Is it possible to lose weight too fast after bypass surgery? My weight was 300, surgery weight was 282 and I had surgery the 26th of Oct., my weight this morning was 253. I'm not complaining, I'm just worried that it's too fast and all of a sudden boom it will stop.
