Trying not to feel so alone.
perforce replied to MinaDina's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This isn't a solution, but I just wanted to let you know that being in the hospital alone is really fine. I went out of country to do mine so the nurses had basic English but there was no one else in the hospital that week from the UK and my family didn't come, so I was by myself. -

Having a very hard and discouraging time at the plateau
perforce replied to arex's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some dietitians don't necessarily give the best advice for bariatric patients. Try getting a higher protein/lower carb breakfast for a while, it sounds to me like your carbs are too high. Unfortunately, it's unlikely to help if you don't get your evening eating under control. -
I was told not to chew gum as it makes your body expect food. If you're not in pain etc I would say nothing will happen. You'll poop it out and know better next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

I went with New Leaf, to Turnov in the Czech Republic (www.newleafwls.co.uk). Yeah, that was a big part of my choice too, I didn't feel like I as just getting chucked out to fend for myself, I had heard so many stories of people not being able to get liquids in and having to go to the ER for IVs! -

If you're willing to go a little further out I paid 4510 euros with New Leaf if money is an issue. -
Frequently Asked Questions
perforce replied to Lilee84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry for the late reply, but I'm from the UK and had my surgery done in Europe (the Czech Republic). The company I went through have you in hospital for a week so if there are any problems at all you have somebody to care for you, which really took the fear out of it for me because if you have problems with leaks etc they're most likely to happen then, but anywhere you go should perform a leak test to check you're ok. It is sometimes possible to present with a late leak (though quite rare) because the leak was so small it didn't show, but if you did have any problems then yes you would definitely go to your NHS doctor. Remember, whatever an individual doctor may think of your decisions, the NHS has a duty of care, they cannot refuse you treatment. If you can, talk to your GP beforehand to tell them (note I said tell, not ask) that you're doing the surgery. Mine was very supportive and told me there would be no problems with her doing any blood tests/B12 injections I might need, but as she is not a bariatric specialist could I bring her information on what she needed to test for and why (which the suurgery group gave me). I actually have my letter from her for my 3 month blood test now to take to the hospital. She also re-prescribed my omezoprole (sp?) (the group gave me a two month supply when I left hospital) and set it to repeat prescription so I an reorder as necessary without seeing her and removed my stitches for me (which got infected so she gave me something to clear that up). Having a GP on side is really reassuring when doing surgery abroad as you want to make sure you have aftercare. -
Calling all February 1st Sleevers!

My group's plan is the same bunnies26, less than 50g carbs a day (I average 20-30) and aim for 800-1000 (I'm getting 700ish most days, but hit 800 a couple of times). Surgery for me was Feb 2nd. -
Quorn, tofu, eggs, beans, cheese is awesome and you can melt it into soups to up the protein. I'm surprised you're allowed pasta, but everyone's programme is different I suppose.

Sleeve this month in Belgium!

I went to the Czech Republic with New Leaf and was really happy with them! The nurses did the injections (it was all part of the price), had it done Feb 2nd. -
I'm so relieved! I had been really nervous about telling my GP about having the surgery abroad, because I've heard a lot can be quite unsupportive of the idea of going for surgery abroad. My doc was fine with it, will help me with any potential reflux medicine and are willing to do blood tests later. I didn't realise how much this was worrying me until I put the phone down and I feel so much better now.

UK - Protein Powder / Bars / Best protein food tips please
perforce replied to Clodee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I order my shakes from theproteinworks.com, their shakes taste good and come in a wide variety of flavours. I use the whey isolate 97, which is low carb. They also have lots of other types of protein products, but not all are low carb so check the stats. Be careful of protein bars! All the ones I've seen in stores have been high protein, but also high calories and carbs/sugars. Gas-x strips are not available in the UK, but if you're willing to pay you can order them from Amazon (I personally didn't have trouble with trapped gas). -

A proton pump inhibitor is a medicine that stops your body from producing as much acid, my surgeon put me on a mandatory two month course after surgery, then said if I had any issues with acid after to go to my doctor and get it re-prescribed. Because it reduces the amount you produce (rather than just help with what you have) I haven't had any trouble with acid. (note: that's just me, people react differently. Even with the PPI you may have an issue). -

I watch Clusie's videos too. I'm sorry your family isn't supportive, but you're not doing them for them, you're doing it for you. This is your chance to restart your life and not be afraid to go out and meet people because you are self-conscious. The people who look pale or sickly are often people who do not follow their vitamin requirements etc, if you're following instructions there is no reason for that to be you.

If it's a private (rather than just closed) you will have to invite people, but members will only be visible to other members. If people can ask to join it's not going to be private for members because it has to be searchable and seen by the public to request to join -
Gaining instead of losing
perforce replied to NatashaSaysRawr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As I said before, your body is physically incapable of judging for itself right now. Get a timer, set it for every three hours and eat something when it goes off, even if it's only an ounce of food. Between that keep up the Water and try sipping at Protein drinks. This isn't about what your body wants anymore, that's the point. Keep to a schedule and get more in, otherwise not losing weight is going to be the least of your problems in the long run. Sent from my SM-G900H using the BariatricPal App -

Flying long haul seven weeks post op - any tips?

I love that - tuna sandwich minus the bread I'm lucky in that Heathrow has a lot of choices for food, but I don't think I'll eat before I fly, just get a coffee and have my meal on the plane - it's white fish and veg. BA allow you to order your meal in advance, thankfully! I think you can have cheese and crackers as a snack later as well. But you're right - I need to get myself a good water bottle. Protein powders are a no go for me - they taste strange and I can't force myself to drink them. What Protein Powder brands have you tried? I use the protein works.com and have found their's lovely, but I've others and they were pretty gross. I want to say that you may find Soup or no-carby options in Pret, but they obviously have lots of deliciously tempting carby stuff too. You can get breakfasts and things which would include eggs, Beans, bacon etc (just ask for no bread/potatoes). I don't eat plane food if I can help it, so I try and get something in beforehand where I can. Sent from my SM-G900H using the BariatricPal App -

Check the ingredients, but I haven't been told no? If you're in premium then it should be easy enough to walk around the person next to you without overly disturbing them. I have to do long haul to Asia every year for work in regular economy and those flight am be looong. 10 hours isn't so bad and premium will make it much nicer. I swear to God travelling without having to worry about all this is one of my major goals of this surgery. Sent from my SM-G900H using the BariatricPal App
