    Endoscope-painful?

My surgeon is doing mine the day before my surgery, I'm very glad to hear I won't be awake for it! I was/am very nervous about it. I hope they always knock people out for it now rather than have me awake... @@ssflbelle I would guess they're looking to make sure you don;t have anything in your stomach/digestive tract that would cause problems on surgery day or otherwise make you unsuitable to be operated on. If they find something, better for them to know then to not. It may lead to surgery being canceled (as could unusual results in any pre-op test), but better that then an emergency situation on the day.

    Reductions before op

    Thanks for the answers guys
  4. I got this list of things I have to remove/reduce from my diet from the surgeon. I googled salicylates but don't understand what is bad about them in surgical situations? Also, why is vit E and fish oil etc bad? I'll follow the instructions of course, I'm just wondering. This is the part of the list I don't get: HERBAL / HEALTH supplements (They have to be reduced before surgery) · Arnica – 2 weeks · Vitamin E – 2 weeks · Fish Oil (Omega 3) – 1 week · Gingko Biloba – 2 weeks · Garlic – 1 week · Natural foods high in Salicylates: curry, cayenne pepper, ginger, paprika, thyme, cinnamon, dill, oregano, turmeric, liquorice, peppermint, raisins, cherries, cranberries, oranges, prunes, grapes, strawberries, chewing gum, honey, wine, cider, vinegar.

    Reductions before op

Ah, I see, that makes sense then. Anyone got any idea about the Vitamin E and the fish oil?
  6. My surgeon just says not to eat the night before (and a few foods I should stop a week before like curry etc)
  7. I quit my job today? Rather sudden and unexpected, so I'll be arriving back in the UK December 24th instead of June next year. This means I have a chance for my surgery to be done much sooner though. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my consultant person will have some dates available in Jan/Feb time (I feel like that would be a busy period, new year new me kind of thing) and I'll be able to get the ball rolling. I hadn't paid my deposit to keep the date yet, so I feel like it should be fine provided they're not fully booked already.

    So that happened

LOL, I thought you meant having some kind of formal proof. Like I say, I'm leaving now and I have my old one already, so its too late for that, this just affects my application for a new one (which I now won't need to do because I'm leaving).

    Unsuccesful surgery ?!?

Sorry I read your post as having had surgery but not losing weight. There are reasons for that to happen (safety first!). Sometimes the tests come back and there's something off about one of them that they want it to get better before they will operate. I've also read that if you're an extreme weight it can be difficult for the surgeon to inflate the stomach so they can access the stomach without damaging other organs. The reasons can be as individual as the person having the op.

    Unsuccesful surgery ?!?

Obviously complications do happen, but before you panic remember that there is a big difference between surgery failing and the patient failing to use surgery correctly.

    So that happened

There is literally no way for me to document it. The guy who did it (supposedly without school knowledge) changed dates on letters I had provided for them, so if anything it would look like I lied to them. I'm already in my second year so my last KITAS (employment permit) was issued based on the false information. My best bet is to finish up and leave before anyone decided to look to closely. Probably, nothing would happen. The government is hugely corrupt, some money would disappear into some pockets and that would be that. But I won't take that risk and I can't possibly trust the school now, and they're the ones who have to file everything on my behalf. When they told me they had to 'brief' me for my meeting I was confused, but then it came out that the information they had on me was different. They had told the government I was in China from Aug 2011 to Aug 2013 to round out my experience time to 5 years because their application for my permit was apparently refused the first time (first I'd heard of it), when actually I was there from Feb 2012-October 2013. I flat out refused to go in and lie (seriously, it's so easy to check when I entered/exited a country? THEY HAVE MY PASSPORT RIGHT THERE) and then suddenly I'm told the meeting wouldn't about immigration but a check of our educational backgrounds. Unfortunately for them that doesn't erase what I now know (and hmmm, the meeting was magically cancelled...). I gave in my notice the next day. The guy who changed it is married to our school director and it seems she didn't know, so I had a panicked phone call from him trying to get me to change my mind (they're both in Jakarta right now), which ended with him saying he had to tell her. I imagine he's in the dog house right now. I sympathize a little with the situation the school is going to find them in now, because they have to get a new English teacher (I'm the department head and we have a terrible time filling positions because the location is utter ****) and they have to do it quickly.

    So that happened

I left my job because it turned out they had 'edited' dome of the reference letters I sent them to make it look like I had more experience than I did (they needed five years experience to get the visa and I had 4.5). I 9nly just found out and if immigration look in to it and find out its false I get deported and have trouble getting work visas not just in this country, but in any country after. Given that my entire career depends on my ability to work abroad it's pretty serious. I can't risk telling those kinds of (oh so easily disproven) lies and I don't like that they put me in that situation. The only thing I feel bad about is the fact that I work in a school, and I hate to leave the kids mud year like this. I'll be leaving in three weeks (at the end of this semester)

I'm actually having my surgery in the Czech Republic, so it's just a case of when they've got spaces. Luckily I don't have any hoops to jump through with the NHS or anything!

    Too big to fly?

Yes, first class are bigger, though it may be cheaper sometimes just to buy two economy if width is your only concern. How much bigger will depend on the airline, so as I said seatguru.com is a great resource.

I Have Accepted That My Tummy

You can get your protein in through plant based means so long as you're careful. Try going vegetarian for a while until you're further out and your sleeve is feeling more tolerant.

The fear of regain is REAL!

This is exactly the reason I want to have surgery now. I have no co-morbidities, but hart problems and diabetes run in my family hugely, and I've noticed the last two years that my knees and feet are giving me a lot of trouble. I'm 32 now, I want to do something while the damage is still reversible. My mom was not supportive at all at the beginning of this. It was really surprising for a couple of reasons. Firstly, out of the two of them I thought it would be my dad who would disagree with the idea (he, in turn, was hugely supportive and offered to pay? It's a world gone mad! I'm self-paying but I appreciated the offer). Without being mean, my mum is a big lady. She's about the same size as I am, maybe slightly bigger (she's a bit taller than me) and has been for a long time. I though of anyone, she would understand why I wanted this and how hard it is to be the size we are. Turns out: no. Mostly I'm puzzled. Why is so against it? She says it's because it's a last resort and I haven't tried everything yet. I disagree, I've tried most things and can't get them to stick. I know how to lose weight, I need help doing it. The size I am makes me miserable and if there is a way to change it why can't I pursue it? I think there may be more going on with her, though whether it's conscious or subconscious I'm not sure. Maybe she sees it in some way as a rejection? Like in some way, because we're both the same size, because I hate being this way I'm therefore judging her in some way by extension? Maybe because she sees feeding us as love and as I'll no longer be able to eat like I am now she sees it as rejection of that love? Maybe she's jealous? Maybe me facing my weight issue is making her uncomfortable because it's making her look at hers? I don't know, there are some many things it could be. I let the idea marinate with her for a while and then mentioned it again last year when I was going to have the band and she was pretty scathing about it, then refused to talk about it anymore. My surgery fell through (something I'm thankful for now as I would prefer the sleeve). Funny enough, I was talking to her a few weeks ago and she suddenly says a co-worker's husband had the surgery and he went from 35 stone down to 20 stone (490 to 280 so far) and suddenly she's not against it and her whole problem before was the fact that I wanted to have it done abroad (a lie, and I'm still having it in Europe rather than the UK, but it's not worth ruining tentative progress by telling her she's full of shit, even if she is rewriting history). Sorry about the novel, but I guess my point is sometimes the fact that we're choosing these paths really scramble people's brains, and I'm not sure they're even acknowledging why int heir own heads, let alone to us.

The fear of regain is REAL!

That really sucks, but then you hear again and again how relationships change after surgery. I would imagine their own failures to use the surgeries (I was going to write 'failed surgery', but no, that's not right, they had no complications) are just making it worse for them to deal with, but knowing why doesn't help the situation.

    Too big to fly?

If it will help, seatguru.com will allow you to search seat maps by plane/flight an tell you the width of the seat etc. You can measure yourself and see if you can fit in. I am 5.5 and 265lbs and I find the 17 inch width (the norm they use for older planes for short haul flights in Asia) to be a very tight squeeze, but longer haul the planes are newer/bigger and it's more comfortable. Depending on if this would be too embarrassing for you or not, you can ask at check-in if the flight is fully booked today, and if not ask them to sit you by an empty seat. I did that once and they accommodated me (I gave them excuse that I get really travel sick and it tends to be very unpleasant for the person next to me, which s actually true. I'm fairly sure they knew what was going on but it gave both them and me a way to deal with the situation without major embarrassment).

  24. I'm looking into providers for my sleeve surgery when I get back home in June. It's likely I will go to Europe to get it done because it's about half the price of the same thing in the UK. Can anyone here tell me where they got their surgery done and who did it. I was going to go with Christian De Bruyne (through a clinic in Belgium) as he does a session in Birmingham (near where I live) every month, but looking a bit more at his record he doesn't seem to do the sleeve that often (more band and mini-bypass) and I contacted his people to as some questions over a week ago and don't have an email back yet, so I'm thinking twice about it. Some of the wording on the site makes me doubt their aftercare a little, which is why I emailed with questions. Any information you could give me would be appreciated, there is a Centre of Excellence in the Czech Republic that looks pretty good but I'm just scouting things out now. Thoughts? Opinions?

    European WLS patients

I actually considered DeBruyne, but I changed my mind as I didn't realise he had done that many sleeves. There was some wording on one of his websites that said something to the effect of 'he would do the sleeve if the patient insisted' which kind of put me off? But from the sound of what you're saying it's likely that website was just a little out of date. I have decided on going to Prague for mine, but please do let me know! I would be interested to hear about your experience.
