I've never been really comfortable discussing personal things -- and I don't know how people will feel or react -- I don't need anyone judging me for something personal. I actually started really 'dieting' about 6 weeks before surgery. I had lost about 15 pounds ahead of time so no one really noticed when I continued after surgery that it was in any way related.
I've never actually lied to anyone (I won't). I told management that I was having surgery and it was a personal matter. They assumed it was woman related (I work primarily with men) which was fine.
As for weight loss, I consider the band to be a tool. When people ask me what I've done, I'm honest about things like reducing portion sizes, skipping a lot of the carbs, not snacking, etc. and adding in lots of exercise - all true.
