Let's talk about Reactive Hypoglycemia
Renkoss replied to Wallflower7522's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Djmohr, that is very scary when your blood sugar drops like that. When you eat oatmeal of Cream of Wheat, do you add any Protein powder with it? I use the Kashi Go Lean Very vanilla Oatmeal, and I add a scoop of Vanilla Muscle Milk Protein Powder to it so I'm getting protein. I haven't done the cream of wheat yet, but might try this weekend. I've had where my blood sugar dropped to 45 before (not since surgery though). It is not a fun feeling, and it would drop just like that...no warning. Always carry around those glucose tabs! -
Let's talk about Reactive Hypoglycemia

Are you on insulin at all? What about meds for blood sugars? I'm a Type 2 who was severely insulin resistant, but my blood sugars are much better since surgery. I still use insulin, but only for basal now. I've lowered it once already and may have to lower again soon as my morning numbers have been in the low 70's. You should always have a glucose meter with you so you can check your sugar, and carry glucose tabs to help raise your sugar. Keep in mind that it will take 15-20 minutes for your body to react to the input of sugar before you start to feel better. There is also a glucose gel that is in a tube or small jar that you could carry around. I keep glucose tabs in my car, in my purse, and I have the gel at work. I've instructed my boss what to do if I become unconscious or loopy from a low. Always need to be prepared. -
Scale recommendations - I don't trust mine

I'd immediately rebox that scale and take it back for a refund to wherever you bought it! No need for something so inaccurate! -

1 week today! The nerves have set in.
Renkoss replied to AnnaBanana.NZ's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 10-1/2 weeks out from surgery, down 40 lbs, and my words of wisdom is just relax. The excitement, anxiety, worrying isn't doing you any good. Calm down! Go into this knowing that once you are in the operating room, and they put you under, your life will be different when you wake; but different in a good way. The first week you will have discomfort and pain, and you will be tired and question why you did this to yourself. But, week 2 you begin to feel better, and week 3 even better, and by week 4 you are feeling pretty good! I feel pretty normal now, have finally realized what "full" feels like now, and am enjoying being down at least 1 size already. Nerves and anxiousness is normal; just don't let it get to you and make it negative. This is a positive thing you are doing for your health. You will get through it and you will be darn happy you made this choice. Good Luck! -
How active were you the days following your surgery?
Renkoss replied to Harsha's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I can tell you that when I came home from the hospital (I was there for 2 nights), I was able to go up and down the stairs to my bedroom, however slowly, and that being in my bed and laying down was a bit tricky until I figured out a position that was comfortable to be in. You will be sore that first week. Like my husband said to me, you have literally been stabbed in 5 different spots on your abdomen. They need to heal both inside and out, so yes you are sore. You will have pain meds, and I know for the first few nights, I made sure to take my pain med right before going to sleep. That helped a great deal to get quality sleep. It might be easier to sleep in a recliner or propped up on a couch the first couple of nights. You should get up and walk around at least for 5 minutes every 1-2 hours after surgery. This will aid in the healing process. -
Crystal Light Post OP?
Renkoss replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told to stay away from caffeine because caffeine is a diuretic, and for every 8 oz of caffeine you drink, you must replace with 8 oz of Water. Unless you are more than 6 months to a year out from surgery, I am wondering why you would drink caffeine. -
Crystal Light Post OP?
Renkoss replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bypass surgery 10-1/2 weeks ago. I drank Crystal Light after surgery. I bought the single serving packets, and I believe they are made with Truvia (Stevia and Erythritol). Crystal Light can be used after surgery. I've never heard of it not being okay. Congrats on your surgery! -
7 days Post Op! Result: no Energy
Renkoss replied to curlysue86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are dizzy because you are not getting in enough water! Dizziness is an indicator of dehydration. Why are you pushing yourself to go back to work so quickly? Also, if you are not pushing to get your Protein in, your body will not heal as quickly either. This was major surgery! You need to take time to heal! I was anxious to get back to work as well after surgery, but I did take 2 weeks off because I knew one week would not be enough and I'd be tired and no energy. Please, take the time to relax and allow your body to heal! This is a marathon; not a sprint. And if you only lost 5 lbs since surgery, then you only lost 5 lbs. Don't be in such a hurry. The weight doesn't just magically fall away. -
I don't have a problem with the Iron constipating me, but I was taking it in the morning with my multi-Vitamin, b12 sublingual, bp med, and probiotic. I had to wait to take my Calcium pills at that point because the iron can interfer with absorption. So you are supposed to take them at least 2 hours apart. Problem is I would take my calcium pills with me, and then forget to take them! So, since I don't menstruate anymore, do I need the iron more or the calcium. I'm thinking the calcium.
-
That is scary. With any supplement, always have to know what is too much. I'm wondering do I actually need to take the Iron supplement. I'm post-menopause and I believe they said for menstruating women to take? I have to ask this at my next visit I guess.

7 days Post Op! Result: no Energy
Renkoss replied to curlysue86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery, you are very tired for at least a few weeks! Just make sure you do as the surgeon told you; sip sip sip, walk walk walk and be sure to get in as much Protein as you can, and take your vitamins!!! These are the most important things to do right after surgery (and honestly for the rest of your life now). I did not go back to work for 2 weeks. First, I couldn't drive for at least a week until I got clearance at my 1 week check up with the surgeon. You will feel better; it takes about 3-4 weeks before you feel somewhat normal again. Just know that the first month is a bit rough, but after that things continually get better and better. Good Luck! -
I can tell you with RNY, it takes a little bit to recognize what your "full" feeling is now. I can tell mine by how I feel in my upper chest area. If I go even one bite over, man you want to talk about painful! The middle of my chest gets a horrible pain like someone is standing on my sternum, and it lasts for a good 15-30 minutes. Sometimes I get sick (sometimes even vomiting). Sometimes I just get dry heaves, but not really dry. The heaves you can feel food there, it just doesn't come all the way up. I've since learned that when I feel kind of satisfied, STOP! Because if one more bite is taken, it will probably be too much. I think this is why you need to eat slowly as well as to recognize when you have had enough and to make your food as passable as possible. Good Luck.

Will WLS work if the problem isn't overeating?
Renkoss replied to WitchySar's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The OP stated that she does not overeat, that she doesn't eat 1000 calories a day, but chooses the wrong foods to eat (junk food, fried food, pizza, etc.). Just wanted to clarify that. Also, there are many reasons people cannot lose weight. I was one of them. I am diabetic, and severely insulin resistant. This surgery helped to reset my body and my blood sugar is coming down nicely. Yes, I'm still using insulin, but not nearly as much as I was. Hopefully as more weight comes off, the need for the insulin will continue to decrease and eventually I can be without it. I ate keto for a few years, exercised until I continually kept hurting myself, and didn't lose any weight. However, my blood sugar did respond for a bit, but then it just kept going higher and higher. I cannot afford for damage to occur to my organs, so I finally saw WLS as my last option. Now I wish I would have done it years ago. I do have metabolic syndrome, and you can do everything right and still not lose weight. Then it is just frustrating and depressing, to say the least. -
Let's face it; you can walk out your door today and get hit by a bus, car, etc. If death is what you are afraid of, then I suggest you get this surgery rather than be obese, unhealthy, and facing complications that will shorten your life span. I'm also one who suffers from anxiety and it is normal to be nervous before your surgery, but (and I don't know what your beliefs are) I have my God that I pray to and pretty much whatever His will is for me, then that is that. I woke up from surgery and was very happy it was over. I never heard 30 days after is when death could occur from surgery, and trust me I read everything I could either google or get my hands on prior to surgery, and I questioned every healthcare professional I met with.

Stupid Choices = Stupid Outcome
Renkoss replied to Sharon1964's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I work in the mental health industry as well, but luckily our office deals more with anxiety and ADHD; not major diseases! It is difficult to be around those who have severe mental illness; on one hand you feel terrible for them that they have this horrendous disease that controls their behavior. And then you sometimes feel horrible for being irritated with them because they are bothering you, yelling at you, threatening you, etc. They truly believe this will give them what they want. I give you tons of credit for being able to stay unemotional. It's difficult to do. -
The drain being pulled out felt weird, but it didn't hurt. And, of course, once it was out it felt so much better. The drain doesn't necessarily cause pain; it's more of a pain in the butt because you are aware that it is there all the time. When mine was removed, the surgeon told me to hum. So I did, and before you knew it, it was out. I was told to keep the hole covered and clean and that it would close up on its own, and it did in a day or two. My surgical cuts were closed outside using a type of skin glue. It eventually just wore off; I'd say within a week or two. Nothing that was done had any severe pain for me. There was discomfort, but I didn't have severe pain at all.

Will WLS work if the problem isn't overeating?
Renkoss replied to WitchySar's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree that not all overweight people became that way from overeating. I had been following a low carb diet for a few years, and never lost weight. Most of the reason for gaining was due to the severe insulin resistance I have and the increased amount of insulin I had to keep using. However, please keep in mind that the OP also said it was from choosing the wrong types of food rather than overeating. So if you could stop eating the wrong foods, and begin eating the right foods, is it possible you would lose weight without WLS? Probably, but you have to have the willpower and the want to change your eating habits. This surgery does not change what you eat; it changes the amount of food you can eat. So, if you are unable to change the poor choices prior to surgery, it may not help you change, albeit you would eat less of the poor choice foods, but still eating poor choices. I hope this made sense. -
That was my thought as well. Post them on here for anyone interested. Besides, I'm sure my legions of fans and fawning groupies would love it! Hey, I'm about to embark back to strength training again after many years of not doing it, so any help would be appreciated!!!

Kyn13, I think all of us here can relate to people like this. I myself would have reported her to her boss or superiors, or to the establishment. Someone who is in the field of teaching or instructing others in exercise should not put their two cents in on a persons health or their "opinion" on whether or not they agree/disagree with how you choose to handle your weight issues. That is just plain negativity and nobody's got time for that nonsense. Sorry this person got you so upset and angry. Know that what you choose to do for yourself is the only "opinion" you need. Hugs and hope everything goes well.

Way to go. Nobody needs that kind of back stabbing in their life. Toss out the trash. Good riddance! Surround yourself with positive people!

I had my drain until my first surgeon's visit, which was just over a week after surgery. I didn't like the drain, it could be uncomfortable and hurt sometimes, but I'd have rather had it than not since it had a job to do and it did that. I wouldn't complain to the doctor. Just follow their orders and do what they tell you to do.

Stupid Choices = Stupid Outcome
Renkoss replied to Sharon1964's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You made that outfit, you did wonderful work! It is beautiful. As far as the antidepressants are concerned, I take my pill at bedtime...literally right before jumping into bed. I NEVER forget to take my pill; everything depends on it! I've learned over the years that with the med my life is pretty much as normal as normal gets for me. Without my med, I'm just non-functional. I tried to change to a different med a couple of years ago. That was a horrible mistake. Went back to what I was on, and that is where I will stay until the day I die. It works for me, I feel like myself when I take it, I can still feel emotions and react to them without being a sniveling mess all the time. Glad everything worked out for you. -
I think it is a great idea, but go one step further and video record the actual workout; preparation for the workout, what equipment is needed for the workout, everything. That way it can be watched and followed. It also may help to feel like whoever is using the video is working out with someone there!

How Do You Stay Cool Without Ice Cream?
Renkoss replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I seem to be getting some hot flashes as well. Not as bad as before the surgery, but just little short ones. But, it is very hot and humid where I live lately, so could be the weather too. I'm hoping they don't last!
