Auntie Traci...I swear since I've kind of decided I want to go through with this that my night time grazing has increased exponentially! I really believe it is completely psychosomatic and that, in a nutshell, has always been my problem with eating. I was eating things that were healthy, but probably just too much of it. I have diabetes, and my number was horrible this morning! This week I'm going to really buckle down and increase my Water intake and reduce my food intake.

    Hello! Anna here.

AnnainOK, Very pleased to meet you! I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I'm just beginning this journey. I have one of the six Nutritional visits under my belt...looking forward to number two!! I am also Type 2 diabetic; been battling diabetes for at least 20 years now, and I'm on an insulin pump and still having great difficulty in controlling my numbers. I've given up quite a bit of carbs other than vegetables, I don't eat fruit, I don't drink milk, I don't drink any type of surgery drink, I don't eat Pasta, rice, potatoes, or bread. I still can't control my numbers. My diabetes has started damaging my kidney's. This is my last chance to control this and stop damage to my internal organs. I've always been rather against this because first off, it is quite a deal to lose weight, and secondly because I guess I felt like if I did WLS I was a total loser because I couldn't do it on my own. I've been trying for the past 3 years to lose weight, and because of the insulin use, I've continued to gain. So here I am. I have more than one co-morbidity as well. I've also got sleep apnea, high cholesterol and tryglicerides, metabolic syndrome. The only thing going well for me is my blood pressure. It's always been good. Nothing else has been though. I am still quite a ways off from surgery, but I'm ready to do this. I'm afraid and scared, but I figure all these great people who have been successful will lend their words or support. I hope everything works out well for you. I'm envious that you are a few weeks from your surgery! How exciting! Stay in contact. I'd be happy to be considered one of your friends here.

    Sweating buckets

Nessa0121, just thinking perhaps it could be hormonal since the surgery? I know that I am pre-menopausal and will just break out into a full on sweat for no reason, and that is due to hormones. Hormones can be really out of whack prior to surgery, and I think WLS can put them back into sync with each other. It could be nothing more than that. Hope it gets better. I know I hate the sweats.
  4. I am also in the Cleveland, Ohio area and will have surgery through The Cleveland Clinic. I have just started the consults, and have had one visit with NUT so far. I have another NUT visit this month as well as meeting the Nurse Practitioner this month. My insurance, BC/BS requires 6 visits with NUT, and you can only do one per month. That part stinks. I was rather hoping this would happen a bit quicker, but I'll follow the rules. If anyone going through the clinic, who is your surgeon?

Me too. That is really the only part that concerns me. I guess stalled would be frustrating, but gaining would be devastating.

Is there anything that scares you about having this done? I'm not really talking about the whole surgical part; that much I'm not really afraid of. Surgery is surgery. I'll be sore for a bit, but that will heal. I'm talking about once you get through the first month or two. Are you afraid of resorting back to old habits? For the most part I eat pretty healthy; but my biggest problem is eating when I'm not really hungry out of boredom, depression, anxiety, emotions. I'm hoping to resolve a lot of that before having surgery, but I read here of people who end up eating things they really shouldn't and the weight loss stalling, or worse...gaining weight back! I want this to be a total lifestyle change that I will never return to old ways ever. My health depends on it! I am hoping this either resolves the diabetes, or at the least makes it much more manageable and able to keep blood sugar numbers low so my internal organs stop being damaged. I'm already 53, so if this gets me into my 80's relatively healthy, I'd be happy with that. I want to see my daughters get married and have children so I can be a grandma. I want to be around for all that.

Cendella170, that is too funny. In my case, I am 9 months older than my husband, so sometimes he tries to treat me like one of our daughters, but I pull the age card on him
  8. Just read through this whole post and I am just in the beginning of this journey. So, I haven't had surgery yet. I'm still going through the appointments and consults. However, this story grabbed my attention because this is one of my fears of having this surgery. I don't ever want to go back to old ways. I've already given up a lot of things because of being diabetic. The older I get, the more difficult the diabetes is to control. I take insulin and the insulin causes weight gain. I quit eating carbs and did really well with giving up carbs and sugar stuff. However about almost a year ago my blood sugar numbers started going all kind of whacky. I have not been able to get control back since. I quit smoking over 1-1/2 years ago because of the diabetes as well. I'm so tired of giving things up and nothing changing for the better. This story grabbed me because I don't want to have this dilemma after going through all the appointments, surgery, and the whole liquid to pureed to solid food diet following surgery. I just want to be healthy. I think you are doing wonderful, but my only suggestion would be to quit buying popcorn and chocolate and keeping it available to eat. Keep only the healthy foods and put them in single serve sizes. I try to keep all bad food out of my house. If we host a party or picnic, I will have the foods here for that occasion, but at the end if someone doesn't take the leftovers, they get trashed. I cannot afford to have bad stuff hanging around the house, because if its there, I'll eat it. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

My husband is a bit skeptical, but that's just him. He will be supportive no matter what, it's just the "Sargeant Carter" mentality that I don't need. That just causes the rebel in me to, well, rebel.

cendella170, very familiar story. I think you have a wonderful game plan going for you. I have two grown daughters and they are both very supportive of me doing this. They realize how much I've tried to lose the weight, and how much I've given up in hopes of controlling the diabetes. My husband is still a bit of a doubting Thomas, but I think as he learns that I am serious and committed to this, he will be 100% behind me on this. My sisters and my Dad are both onboard as well. And you are right; at the core I'll always be me. Some of that I hope to change (the negative part of it) but that's a whole other story!! I think I will begin to make a game plan as well. I did buy some light weights to begin doing a bit of strength and toning. I really am looking forward to being able to move better and without so much discomfort. I want to be an active woman again instead of so sedentary. Well, need to go to bed now. Hope to talk with you again soon.

Thank you all for the welcome. This journey is just beginning for me, and I have to admit I'm really rather scared, but I'm not really sure why. cendella170, Yep you definitely have more than one issue to qualify!! Like I said in my previous post, I also have BC/BS, and I too have to go to 6 nutrition classes, one per month. BC/BS is a bit ridiculous with that. I have my next appointment on October 16th with Nutrition, and another appointment on October 21st with Nurse Practitioner. It seems just getting to the surgery date is so far away. In some ways, I'm ready for this to begin already. I've battled my weight all my life. There were a few times in my life that I was a decent weight and decent size, but that was short lived. I've always been very active, but as I entered my 50's, I just can't stay as active as I used to. I'm sure part of it is the weight. Unfortunately, I have such a hard time losing weight. I'd rather hit my head against a brick wall. I'm glad to find people who I can talk to about this and can relate to how I feel. I never even wanted to entertain the thought of having WLS, but my diabetes is beginning to damage my kidneys and I'm not ready to die in 10 years or less. I think the reason I'm scared of this is because I won't know how to act as a thin person. I'm afraid of my face looking old as I lose the fat. If I get saggy skin on my midsection, that won't bother me. I'll just wear a compression thing like Spanx or just a girdle type garment. I've already given up a lot of stuff a few years ago when I began a low carb diet, so I won't really miss the carbs. Every now and then I get a sweet tooth, but I usually can satisfy that with sf popsicles or Jello. I cut a good amount of caffeine from my diet so giving it up completely shouldn't be a problem. I mostly drink decaf now. The soda will be somewhat difficult to stop, even though I usually only drink 1 can a day. I find it as a treat. But, I'll give it up. I quit smoking 1-1/2 years ago and I never thought I'd do that, but I did. If the diabetes would disappear after surgery, trust me I won't miss it! Tell me more about your life cendella170. Anyone else out there who wants to share, please do. I need to feel I have this circle of people who can virtually hold my hand and let me know it is all going to work out, because I'm scared. Thanks.

Hi cendella170. I'm new to the site as well. I have just begun the consulting part of this journey, so I've met with Nutrition 1 out of 6 times required by the insurance. I can only go to appointments once a month, so I won't be getting surgery any time soon! I have Anthem BC/BS Federal Insurance. They have required the 6 visits with nutrition. I'm not sure what else they will require prior to actual surgery. You can call Customer Service and ask what you benefits cover for bariatric surgery. Also, you must meet more than one health issue to qualify. I know for me I am at least 100 lbs overweight, I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP to sleep, I have diabetes Type II, Metabolic Syndrome, and the beginning of kidney damage from the diabetes. I've been tried on just about every diabetes drug out there, I am currently on an insulin pump and so very insulin resistant. I have difficulty really getting my numbers under control. I've been trying to lose weight for the past 3 years by eating low carb and just haven't had any luck. It is pretty much impossible to lose weight while using so much insulin. I hope that you have success with the insurance. Pleasure to meet you as well.
