  1. I can honestly say I didn't have huge pain for the first two days after surgery, but then when I came home, you tend to move around more because you are in your own space, and you don't have nurses and nursing assistants there for take care of everything for you, so you are doing more than you were in the hospital. That is when the pain became stronger. I'm on Day 6 post-op and haven't taken any pain medications yet today so far. I do have pain but more discomfort and not really enough to take oxy for.
  2. I can honestly say don't overbuy at this point for after surgery. I am 6 days post-op and I have no real appetite at all since surgery. I still eat popsicles, use Protein shakes, but you are not going to have huge hunger or want anything that is too complex. Just a tip. Congratulations on your surgery dates!
  3. I don't see why not? It is a Protein shake and you can tolerate it, I'd say go for it.

    Air in my esophagus?

I didn't have to have a cat scan or anything, but I did have, and sometimes still do, some pain in my chest area. I understand the "air in the esophagus" because I feel like I have that as well. There is so much that you don't know and that they don't tell you to expect, and everyone experiences things differently.
  6. I've never had my gallbladder out, but I've had hysterectomy in the past, but they did that without cutting me open. I've never really had gas pains from any other procedures done. I had RounY on Monday, 4/11, and I can tell you the first 3-4 days the gas pain has been horrible. It has begun to subside on Day 5 post-op. Today I have more pain from the JP drain that I have coming out of my abdomen more than anything. I hope they remove this on Tuesday at my first follow up. It is uncomfortable and I have to keep changing the bandaging around it. Didn't know about this part. I don't think everyone has this though. So in reference to the gas pain, I had pretty bad gas pain, but it passes.

    Liquid diet begins....

Sorry Ashlie M, I thought it was you who stated you woke up screaming. It was Amber. I hope you are doing better Amber. This surgery is a major change to our innards, and unfortunately that involves quite a bit of healing. I know the pain..I've got it too. We will get through this. Stay positive and keep looking forward. You will get to that point where the pain is less than the excitement and encouragement of the weight loss.

    Liquid diet begins....

Ashlie M, I'm so sorry to hear that you have had such a bad experience with all this. I hope things improve very quickly for you. I woke up this morning wanting my pain meds (oxycodone). I took that and some liquid tylenol and pain was more manageable. I was able to get outside and walk to the corner of the street and back with my daughter. Felt good to be outside. It is a beautiful sunshiny Northeast Ohio day today and the neighbors are out and life is going on outside the window! Big happening on my street today; a car drove through the front of a house. I live on a very quiet bedroom community cul-de-sac, and things like this just don't happen around here! So, news trucks, fire trucks from surrounding cities, SERT team and Search and Collapse Teams, along with police have been on the street all day. Can't wait for the news later. I'm praying for all my fellow surgery peeps that everyone is feeling better. Each day brings new hope. I hope those of you who are having difficulty find some peace and healing, and a lot less pain in the week to come.

    2 days Post-op

I'm Day 4 from surgery and the gas has been the biggest thing for me. In the beginning it was just growling around in my system all the time. That has gotten better, and I have passed substantial gas, but I don't dare pass gas unless I'm on the commode. I have diarrhea and have had it since Day 4 of the Pre-op diet! I guess I expected as much since I'm only taking in fluids, fluids is what's going to come back out. But, I'm really tired of trying to run to the bathroom whenever the gas feels like it just needs to explode out, because it won't be just gas. I know it's TMI, but I don't know how else to describe it. I took an Immodium today hoping to calm that part down. I have not used any pain meds today other than Tylenol (liquid), and I do have discomfort in my midsection, but if I don't do too much it's tolerable. I want to go outside for a walk, but I'm afraid to go too far from the bathroom! I feel kind of bad today and that is depressing me. Trying to keep my spirits high.
  10. Thanks Cervidae. This is Day 4 and I have to say I'm in a bit of pain today. The gas is beginning to be less rumbly, and I'm getting my liquids and Protein, and I'm trying to walk as much as possible (I have a split level house so I have stairs as well). I slept pretty well last night only waking once to use the bathroom. The weather is lovely today outside, so I may venture out to walk around the block just to get some fresh air and some exercise. I just hate that I have to wheel a stupid oxygen tank with me. It seems like you get rid of one thing and gain another. I don't have to wear my insulin pump anymore, but now I have a big oxygen tank that I have to take where ever I go! I'm still using insulin, but just a couple of shots a day for now. Body is obviously still responding to the trauma of surgery. I know this will take time, and I am a rather impatient individual, but I'm trying to take it as it goes. Today seems like it may be a difficult day, but I'm not going to let it stop me from doing anything. I'm sore and I hurt, but I have a better life waiting for me and I'm going to go after it; one little step at a time!
  11. Aw ambernicole, sorry you are having such a bad time with this. I also had surgery on Monday (4/11) and the gas pains are horrible. I'm sitting here right now with so much gas rumbling around it's not even funny. My belly is sore, but a little less than yesterday. I took a shower today and washed my hair and that made me feel more human. I've been attempting to get up and walk around more so the gas begins to work its way out. I think that pain is worse than the actual surgery pain! I also have a situation where I have to be very careful about passing the gas because sometimes its not just gas ! That's terrible. Hang in there friend. Things will get better. Be sure to walk around as much as possible, get in your liquids, and do whatever they told you to do while in the hospital. Things will get better. You've made it through to the other side and things will get better. I'm praying for your recovery sweetie. Hugs.

    Pain under breastbone

I think I would call my doctor about that. It may just be trapped gas, but with pain in chest or under breastbone, I wouldn't take any chances.

    Liquid diet begins....

I know I'm getting in at least 48-64 oz. You do know to count everything like broth, jello, popsicles along with water or decaf tea/coffee toward your liquid intake right? That makes it much easier to get in the liquids. Yeah 64 oz minimum. But thankfully counting other things goes toward that amount. It's the protein intake I'm struggling with. Just not feeling "food" at this point. Day two was for sure the worst of them all and each day I wake up it's a little bit more tolerable. I can't wait for the moment I jump on a scale and see -15 or more!!! Ashlie M Sent from my iPhone Which protein shakes do you do? I use Premier that have 30 grams of Protein. Makes it easy to get in at least 60 grams with just 2 shakes. I also use Boost that are 16 grams. I'm not hungry at all, and the liquid is keeping me satisfied. I know the day will come when food will be a reality again, but at this point not too worried about it. Mind you doesn't mean I'm loving the broth and jello anymore!!!

    Liquid diet begins....

Home from the hospital today. Everything went very well on Monday. Unfortunately I have to be on oxygen for now because my O2 kept going down. Hopefully it will only be for a few weeks. They took me off my insulin pump, and for now they want me to just do a couple shots a day. This may completely change too. The gas is HORRIBLE! I feel like there is a thunderstorm going on inside my system! I don't dare let go of any of it without being on the commode for fear it isn't just gas coming out ;O Glad to here you ladies all made it to the otherside okay. I'm doing very good with liquids, and doing very good with walking around. Did any of you have to have an Upper GI test day after surgery? I did to look for leaks. Everything went well! Looking forward to updates.

    Low energy during preop?

Actually I felt very energetic during these past 2 weeks. I have surgery tomorrow, and am on a clear liquid diet today, but I think the Protein shakes were really good for me. But, everyone experiences things differently. Are you taking any B12 or B Complex? Those should help.

    Liquid diet begins....

I have an 8:30 am check in time tomorrow. I've drank my quart of GoLitely and it's doing its thing. Since only a quart was required I'm hoping it won't take forever to be done doing its thing All of the April 11th surgery peeps, Good luck tomorrow. Hoping and praying for all of us to have a successful and quick recovery and for all of us to begin a new chapter in our lives.

    Liquid diet begins....

I just got a call from the scheduler for my surgery time on Monday; was told to arrive by 8:30 AM! Now I've got butterflies in my stomach and feel like there is so much to do between now and then. This is really happening isn't it? :/

    Liquid diet begins....

My husband is doing a picturebook for me as my weight loss begins so I can go back and see how much I changed over time. People have been asking me if I've recently lost weight. I've been on this liquid diet for almost 2 weeks now and I don't see a change when I look at myself, but I did get on the scale yesterday and showed a 7 lb loss. Now on a fat person, 7 lbs is usually not even noticeable, but I think like my husband said, I've lost the "bloat" look. So, I'll take it!

    Liquid diet begins....

I agree ambernicole22. We need to stay in contact. This liquid pre-op diet is beginning to bore me! broth, Jello, and popsicles! The popsicle part isn't so bad because it makes me feel like I'm cheating (they are really good), but I'm ready to move on from this stage. Will still have 1-2 weeks of this liquid diet AFTER surgery! Yikes! I hope everyone having surgery next week all have good luck and wonderful outcomes. I have lots to do this weekend to be prepared for Monday! Can't believe it is here. Began this journey last September and here we are! So excited for everyone!

    Forever!

Trust me when I tell you those 6 months will go by so fast. I started this journey in September, 2015 and my surgery is Monday, April 11th; 4 days from now. I thought the same thing when I began appointments, but there is really so much information to learn, and so much lifestyle changes to make that you will be happy to have had these last 6 months to take it in small bites rather than just being thrown to the lions. This takes a great amount of preparation, and although it annoyed me in the beginning, I'm so glad that I have the knowledge and the information that I have now. I'm still scared of screwing up after going through all this, but I know my fears are nothing that anyone else hasn't experienced. Sometimes you feel like you are all alone in this journey. Trust me you are not! Everyone here is such an inspiration and motivater that you will know that you've made the right decision. Ask lots of questions. Write things down as you think of them so you can find out the answer. Being prepared is your best tool. Good Luck to you.

    Liquid diet begins....

We are only human, and you caved. Like Ashlie said...start again now! Just do the best you can. Dinner time is difficult for me too; especially if my husband is cooking dinner for himself and sometimes our daughters come and eat here as well. Last night he was making chicken picatta and the aroma was killing me! But, luckily, I didn't give in (not like he would let me anyway) and got through it. I'll eat chicken picatta again, just not right now. We are all in this together! One week from today and hopefully I'll be out of surgery and beginning to recover. Yay!
  25. Oh, can't wait to find this new flavor! I love Banana's and Cream flavor! Will be a nice change. If you wanted to make it taste like a chocolate covered banana you could always put in blender with some unsweetened cocoa powder, or mix with chocolate almond milk. Sounds so yummy.
