I'm only 3 weeks post op at this point, but I can tell you I wish I would have listened to my doctors years ago and had this done. I also am diabetic, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, high triglycerides, beginning of diabetic retinopathy and beginning of kidney disease. My diabetes is under excellent control right now, I'm losing weight which should help with the cholesterol, trigs, apnea and help avoid further damage to the kidneys and eyes. I always thought it was so extreme to have weight loss surgery. Now that I've done it, I shake my head in disbelief. It was not bad at all! I'm down almost 30 pounds since pre-op diet, and my eating and hunger are very controlled. If I could go back about 5 years, I'd do this again in a heartbeat knowing what I know now.

I'm a Lane Bryant shopper myself, and I do adore most of their clothing. I have things I've bought from Lane Bryant for many years, and they all still look pretty darn good. Luckily I saved probably the last 2 sizes I grew out of so I have work clothes and summer clothes this year. I will not have to get new clothes until the end of this year, or early next year. I prefer to shop at a bit of a higher end store than Walmart, only because a cheaper type of cloth shrinks up pretty badly from Walmart, Kmart, etc. I've never had luck with clothing bought at the lower cost department stores. I also like buying plus-size clothing from Macy's. When Macy's has a sale, and then coupons on top of it, you can really get a great deal of clothing for a low cost. Same goes for Lane Bryant. I've gone into Lane Bryant and spent $150.00 and got pretty much a new wardrobe!! You just have to watch the prices, keep your coupons and reward certificates, and shop the clearance racks!

Made the best tuna salad for lunch
Renkoss replied to Sophie74656's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
Yes, I've already used chicken breast, avocado and light mayo, lime juice, salt and pepper and pureed it. That was pretty good. A little like eating canned dog food or cat food (consistency-wise), but tasty. I will do the tuna fish perhaps tonight. I have some hard boiled eggs, tuna, light mayo, avocado, and capers! -

Sounds phenomenal! I think I may just have all that stuff in my refrigerator, as well as the avacado! Oh darn. I'm still on soft foods. Bummer. Can't do the hard veggies. -
I'm 6 days away from surgery & scared as heck!

You are doing great! If the bed is difficult for you, perhaps you could sleep on the sofa or a recliner for the next few days? Might be a bit easier. I had difficulty getting in and out of my hospital bed, so I ended up sleeping on the recliner in the hospital room. Once home, I did sleep in bed, but the first week it was a bit uncomfortable for me because I'm a stomach sleeper and of course couldn't do that. After that first week I found a position that was comfortable and that's all she wrote! I'm 3 weeks out and already sleeping back on my stomach! Every day will be a bit better than the day before. When you hit 3 weeks, you will feel almost like nothing was done, except you will notice you are losing weight. It's wonderful. Follow the rules to the letter and you will be wonderful! -
Day 5 of pre-op and I miss food.
Renkoss replied to LibrarianBecky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor is different in their instructions and how they have patients do things prior to surgery. Also, insurance may dictate some of it as well. -
Someone is pregnant, and possibly doesn't know it, and may have had surgery on top of it! Scary.

Diabetic pre surgical diet
Renkoss replied to addouk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't be nervous. It really isn't that bad. You will have soreness/discomfort the first 3-4 days, but then it starts getting more tolerable. I don't blame you for being excited. I was so ready for this to happen. I'm really glad that I did this. Like I said, I can only hope that with more and more weight loss will come less insulin resistance. -

I completely understand. Anytime I can help, anytime you need to vent, go ahead. I'll listen. -
Yep, won't work for me then. MSG causes migraines for me. I would guess then that the nutritional yeast will too. Thanks for that bit of info.

When I first starte eating low carb a few years ago, the first week you feel like you have the flu. It is called "The Atkins Flu". It is carb withdrawal and it will stop. Drink lots of Water. You have to get used to the liquids anyway, might as well start!

My pre-op testing was an all day affair. I had blood work done, met with anesthesia, met with hospital admissions, had appointments with surgeon, surgeons nurse, and had vitals checked as well as weight. I might be missing something, but that was most of it.

Diabetic pre surgical diet
Renkoss replied to addouk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I assume you are not in the U.S.A. since you are using kg to tell your weight. I am also a Type 2 insulin dependent diabetic who is severely insulin resistant. I am surprised at how much food you are allowed prior to surgery. My 2 week pre-op diet consisted of liquids only. I am 3 weeks out now from surgery, and I'm doing great. My insulin resistance has gotten much better, even though I'm still on insulin, with more weight loss, that may change at some point. I'm good with how things are going for me right now. I wish you lots of luck with your surgery helping your diabetes. -
The worst part is over. You are now on the other side! Welcome to your new life! Everyday will get better, but warning; Day 4 or 5 sometimes can be rough. Just take it easy and you will get through it. Then everything will begin to be easier.

Aw, so sorry you are going through this after 21 years olf marriage. Perhaps your wife feels she should make changes too, but is not willing to do so. You did something about your issues. Maybe you deserve better?

How much missed work post surgury
Renkoss replied to chandras1978's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I took 2 weeks off for surgery, hospital stay, and recovery. I can say honestly I was probably ready to go back after a week, and I have a desk job, but I wanted to wait until after my 1st week follow up with the surgeon, and I still had the drain tube in at that point. I was not on pain meds anymore, but just took the additional time to rest. I was tired that first week back, but this is my second week back and I feel great. -
Thyroid Medication and Malabsorption
Renkoss replied to ShellMilliner's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
From what I can tell you, I began taking my thyroid meds in the evening before bed too. They did not work well for me. I now take my meds early morning. I have them set up next to my bed with a small cup of Water. When my husband gets up at 6AM, I reach over and take my thyroid meds. I only do it like this because you are supposed to take the thyroid meds at least 30 minutes to 60 minutes before drinking coffee. When I get up at just before 8AM, I want my coffee right away. But, I have read that you should take thyroid medication in the morning. -
I remember during pre-op testing, the surgeon's nurse told me that once every three days was probably normal in the beginning. I can say that just in the last few days I've been getting the urge to go again each morning like I used to; with one big difference. That first poop of the morning I have to work to get it going! I probably should take a stool softener, but once it gets going, it goes. But the residual constipation each morning is not fun. What are you eating at this point? Are you getting in enough Fiber? Do you eat refried Beans, or hummus? What about dairy? These are all things that should help you go. Also your multi-Vitamin should be helping as well.

Well thank goodness! There is no need for you to feel so poorly after having surgery for this. For sure not as long as you were having difficulties! Glad you are feeling better! -
Every one is different with their instructions cat. I started my Vitamins one week post-op, or after my first one week appointment with the surgeon. I hope you feel better soon.

Day 5 of pre-op and I miss food.
Renkoss replied to LibrarianBecky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Katrina, you may not be nauseous or in much pain after surgery. Don't look forward to that! I had no nausea and more like discomfort rather than pain. You are getting there! -
You can also order from Amazon.com
