  1. Has anyone considered a mini triathlon? I was talking to a guy from church a couple of weeks ago about doing some 5k's. He mentioned maybe looking into a mini triathlon a couple of towns over. After looking it up online, I've found there are so many around here that I didn't know about. I'm actually kind of excited to try to start training for one and see if I could handle it. Anyone else consider doing one of these?

    March Exercise Challenge

Stef-yup, trifind.com/MN. There are ALOT around here each summer by the looks of it. Me and a guy from church are looking at doing at least one this summer. Like I said, I'm going to try it out on Thurs at the gym and see how well it goes for me. Of course, if I do this, I will NOT be wearing a Speedo. There isn't enough money in the world for that.
  3. I went in to see my PCP about another matter. I decided to broach (sp) the subject with him, nervously. After barely having the words "lapband surgery" out of my mouth, he said he thought it would be a great idea. I go to Park Nicollet Clinic in my hometown and it turned out PNC has 3 bariatric surgeon teams. All they do is bariatric surgery. All of their nurses, and most of their assisting staff, have had bariatric surgery (either RnY or lb). So, they know EXACTLY what their patients are going through at each stage of the process. It was the best decision I've made concerning my health talking to him. He was very supportive and still is.

    Law enforcement thread

Big reason why I decided to have the surgery. As of now, we do not have this, but it has been in the talks for a long time. It will come about eventually. I figured I would get ahead of the need. Marathinner, I would try to find out about the dash cam. If there was one in his car, it would make it easier to prove the time you were stopped. Also, it could show his behavior.

    March Exercise Challenge

Today was a running day on the treadmill. Total of 50 minutes, here is the breakdown: 22 minutes at 5.5 mph and 1.0% incline (I was told that running @ a 1.0% incline will make the run on a treadmill more like a run outside) for a total of 2 miles 15 minute walk at 4.0 mph and 2.0% incline for a total of 1 mile 4:40 minute run at 6.5 mph and 0 incline for a total of 0.5 miles. 8:20 minutes at 4.0 mph and 2.0% incline for a total of .55 miles Total-4.05 miles and 840 calories. Sidenote: don't know if any of you have seen the thread, but I'm looking into starting my own little training regiment of my days off from work to try for a mini triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 13-15 mile bike ride, 3.1 mile run). I'm going to do the first one on Thursday. I'll let you know how bad it goes.
  7. Not sure of what I am going to do for a training schedule. I'm going to hit the gym this Thursday when I am off to so I can spend extra time there. I'm going to try out the swim, hit the bike and then test the treadmill. I'll see what I am capable of doing. Right now, I figure the swim will be the toughest as I have never swam for distance, just leisure. Should prove interesting.

When can I start exercising post-op?

I was told I could start doing cardio as soon as I felt up to it. I was walking my dog w/i 2 days and by the next week, I was at the gym on the treadmill. I was also told I could start lifting weights after 2 wks. Just as long as I started off light and worked my way up. Just no abdominal work for 4 wks. It all depends on what your dr wants. I would suggest asking that question pre op so you can start on a plan.

When To Get Serious About This Post-Op?

I'm nowhere near as long as Jack and ccar50, but I just had my first fill 1 1/2 wks ago at my 6 mo. checkup. I've managed to lose just over 100 lbs in that time by watching my diet and exercising ALOT. I've found that even though, like ccar50, I don't feel the restriction alot of people talk about, I do know when to stop and how I feel w/i 1/2 hr of stopping. I know if I wanted to, I could eat through the band, but I don't want to. If I just wait that 30 minutes, I am full and remain so for around 4 hrs. If I can't make it much longer, I simply get a healthy, small snack like 1/4 c of cottage cheese. It's never too soon to start working at the weight loss. It's ok to push yourself in the exercise dept. Just don't overdo it in the eating dept. Use your head and listen to your body. It will tell you what you can handle.

    Treadmill Needed

Check out Craigslist.com. There are usually a few treadmills on there each day. Most for not too much.
  11. Lise, that was my plan as well. Just a few people. Then, as I started telling more people, the better I felt. I don't care what others think about me anymore. I am not doing this for their approval. I'm doing this for me and my family. Like you said, if I give one person education on another option, I'm going to do it. I've had several people ask the initial questions I had asked of my fellow officer when I was considering it. Why would I want to make them feel like a lesser person by denying the help I've gotten? Good luck with your weightloss. I've looked at your blog and will be keeping track of it.

    March Exercise Challenge

First, I crack the century mark. Which, in and of itself, makes it a great week. But, then today, I just got unofficial word that I made it back on the SWAT team in my dept! This was one of my reasons for wanting the band. I had to drop off the team in Jan. of 2004 due to weight issues. It was basically at that moment I pretty much gave up on working out on a regular basis. I just didn't have the drive to get in any more. I gave up. My weight went up FAST. Late 2006, I finally decided I had to do something about my weight or I was not going to be around too much longer at the rate I was going. So, lapband was my choice. I had to jump through alot of hoops for the insurance and luckily had a really great clinic I was going through that fought some of my battles with BC/BS of IL, but it was worth it. 1 week after my 6 mo. bandiversary and 2 goals are accomplished! This is an amazing tool and I will tell everyone who will even listen to me about it.

I am back on the SWAT team at work!!!! I had to drop off of it in Jan., 2004 due to weight issues. Now, I'm back and I plan on lasting for a looooooong time. Thanks lb for being the tool that helps me accomplish my goals.

Great workouts Stef!!!! Keep up the great work. For me today, working the late day shift, so I hit both upper body and cardio. Today and tomorrow are the end of my cycle, so it's the tough end of it. Upper body was: Reverse grip lats: 130 x 12 Incl bench: 145 x 12 Cable crossovers: 60 x 12 DB curls: 30 x 12 Skull crushers: 80 x 12 Hammer Strenght military press: 60 x 12 Back ext on Roman chair: 55 lb db x 12 DB shrugs: 90 x 12 Total of 3 circuits. No rest btwn sets other than the walk to the next and about 2 minutes btwn circuits to rest. Easy to do when the reps are 7-9. 10-12 reps are KILLER circuits. Cardio was 65 minutes on elliptical for 5.11 miles and 1040 calories. Tomorrow is lower body and cardio together as I'm off. Then, 9 days of no lifting to recoup and back at it again.

Thanks Jess. It would have felt sooooo much better, but I went for cardiovascular HR today instead of weight loss HR and it really has wiped me out. Think the bug from last week is playing a part as well. It will feel better after I get some rest. But it still feels great!

  20. Hit the century mark at 9:10 am this morning. My highest weight EVER was 379 last summer about 1 mo pre op. Stepped on the scale this morning and, 278.5 I was so happy. I originally set my goal to be somewhere btwn 250 and 270. Then, after about 2 mos post op, I switched to 240 flat. I may be able to hit that by my bandiversary. 6 mos, it should be doable even if I start to slow down on the weight loss. With softball season coming up, I may not feel the need to hit the gym for cardio every morning. We'll see.

Same here. I'm kind of going off my weight when I graduated hs. I was 250 then and in pretty good shape as an offensive tackle. I originally thought I wanted 250 to 270. Then, as the pounds started coming off, I switched it to a flat 240. We'll see when I get there. At the rate I'm going, I should easily get there by my bandiversary. I'll talk with my surgeon or PA when I reach my goal. They told me at my first consultation that 225 was doable. We'll see. The big thing for me is, DON'T EVER GO BACK UP!!!!! That is important to me.

Two items today: Cardio-50 minutes on treadmill (incl 2.5 mile run @ 5.5 mph) 4.02 miles and 803 calories elliptical machine-60 minutes 5.29 miles and 1099 calories Total-115 minutes, 9.31 miles and 1901 calories. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT- I hit the century mark today. 100.5 lbs lost! I was so excited to finally hit it. Thanks for keeping me motivated everyone!
  23. Ok, gotta update here and share the news. If you will look at my ticker down below, I HIT THE CENTURY MARK THIS MORNING! 100 lbs gone! I can't believe it. I just keep having to almost pinch myself to realize it's true. Thanks for all the great encouragement you have all been. I truly think having this forum here makes it so much easier to do this.:biggrin::w00t::biggrin::frown::biggrin::frown::biggrin:

I know about the shrinking problem Mike. I swear I've shrunk some as well. You appear to be going gang busters so far. Keep up the great work! It's seeing results like that that keep me motivated. I don't want to fall behind.
  25. Ok, I'm a little slow on this forum. I just found this thread. As you can see by my ticker, I'm 1 lb away from the century mark. I hope to get there by this weekend. I sometimes have trouble convincing myself I've lost this much in just 6 mos. I keep trying to mentally tell that I misread the scale. But, then I remember all the clothes I can no longer wear because they are too big. Funny thing is though, I still have to wear 3X shirts for now because my shoulders and chest are still too big from lifting, but the torso area BELLOWS out. What a great feeling.
