Sorry but as a lab tech I still have to disagree that this is a good idea. You need your body to get use to running efficiently, this means spreading out caloric and nutrient intake over the course of the day. If you do intermittent fasting your body kicks into starvation mode and will store any caloric intake it can when you do eat. If your are storing calories you are then counter productive to weight loss. What professional body builders do is some what different as they also incorporate what is called drying out be for a competition. They basically dehydrate themselves as well to shed excess fluid. Again if your body has not been conditioned over time to do this it is not a good idea. For long term results you have to train your body to run efficiently, that would mean a steady intake of fluids and clean calories and protein over the course of the day. intermittent only leads to yo yoing and on and off starvation mode which will yield no long term benefits. You have to train your body to be efficient for years not days.

I would disagree. Exercise, lean protein, and time that is the best formula. Fasting can cause you to loose lean muscle mass which is counter productive to what you are trying to accomplish. My trainer would freak out at the idea of fasting (has done it to me already). With exercise and proper diet your body will eventually get enough muscle mass that is has no choice but to burn the fat if you keep a good lean protein diet. The trick is to keep the muscle you have or add to it a little to get to that tipping point, and if you keep your diet and exercise going it is just a matter of time at that point. I have gotten to 20.3% body fat now, granted it has taken me 2 years to do it but my body has not got to the point it can burn the extra fat without loosing muscle tissue.

% Excess Body Weight Loss Based on STARTING BMI
Waler replied to Apple203's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am a medical professional and I would say to stay away from the traditional BMI chart. It does not take into consideration body type or percent of lean muscle. I use the meter my trainer has which tells me I am at 23% body fat. That might sound like a big number but professional athletes and marathon runners are in the teens, so take that into consideration and I will go with it. -
also try to remember to look at food differently. Eat until you are no longer hungry. when we were growing up we were always taught to eat until we are full so we considered that the right way. If we eat only when we are hungry and stop when we are no longer hungry, I found I had much better results.

In need of help identifying a problem
Waler replied to njgal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
well it could be an acid issue. did they put you on anything like an antacid? -
The best I can tell you is they both come with pros and cons. With the bypass you will have some vitamin absorption issues and you can get dumping syndrome if you do not behave on your diet, but the long term weight loss is higher. I personally when with the sleeve do to less issues with absorption, but you will not lose as much weight long term. Do you research and talk with you doctor, this decision is totally up to you and each person has a different view on it. It is your journey make it what you want it to be

get up and do some walking when ever you can, it helps. Also make sure you sip sip sip dehydration can be a real problem as well

Has sleeve helped with comorbidity?
Waler replied to ButterflyNinja's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was on medication for diabetes, High Blood pressure, cholesterol and a CPAP. The day after my surgery my surgen came to see me and asked me if I brought my meds from home. When I showed her I did she took them and threw them in the trash and told me you will not be needing these any more, and she was right. -
How much protein should you actually have ?
Waler replied to mzsantiago88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nut has set mine high due to the fact that I am really active. I now run 3 miles a day and spend 1 1/2 doing weight exercises so I am at 110 to 125 grams of protein per day. So my best answer would be to talk to a Nut and see what your diet looks like and what your level of activity is. You do not want to go with too little protein as it will make you lose muscle tissue as you lose weight. That is the main reason behind the protein is to keep you from losing muscle tissue -
there is also the other side of the coin to look at here. This is the time you might want to think about making a clean break from carbonation as it is not a good idea to do after surgery.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by the question Why?
Waler replied to StephersSweet's topic in Rants & Raves
when someone gives me the your taking the easy way out attitude that is when I laugh at them and inform them that is they think it is an easy way out they are sadly misinformed. It is a tool nothing more, it is not a magic fix or a cure all, you still have a lot of work to do. that usually shut them up because by then they realize how ill informed they really are. -
Well I guess my first red flag/question is one week post op and eating tuna? It just seems at one week out that eating something solid like tuna does not make much sense but every Doc is different. As for going up one or two pounds that could be something as simple as water retention from sodium intake. As for protein shakes I am two years out and still do them, so this might be something you want to kind of get use to.
-
my fitness pal works for me but I am sure others have different preferences.
-
thyroid is something that I do not think would cause your surgery to be put on hold. What is your Doc saying about it?
-
could be excess stomach acid, could be head hunger, sometimes I have some water when I get like that and it goes away.
-
try to keep in mind you are probably taking in a lot less calories than your body is use to. This mean you are now forcing your body to use the fat stores that your body wants to keep for lean times and emergencies. If your like most of us you have had some time of lack of exercise as well, which can lead to some muscle breakdown and weakness. Make sure you are getting in enough protein so that your body does not try to break down muscle for fuel, that should help, and if you continue to have concerns talk to your doc, that is what they are there for.

I'm trying not to get discouraged
Waler replied to celticNgel's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
one of the most important things is also make sure you get in enough water. try getting use to it ahead of time, sip, sip and sip some more all day, it is a good habit to get into, because it will be harder to do after surgery. -
I know it can be tough but that is when you want to ask yourself if you really want to go down that road again. It is not subway so much as the empty calorie bread. When you are on solid food again Subway makes any sandwich into a chopped salad, a much better choice
-
I started as soon as my doc gave me the green light, which is about the same time as you. Just start off slow and work your intensity up.
-
It is not surprising, but it never hurts to ask. Sometimes an incision is in an area where there may have been a nerve fiber or muscle, we are all built a little different, but ask your doc that is what they are suppose to be there for.
-
my surgeon did not require a pre-op diet, I was just told to keep it within reason.

What do you use in place of eating for fun/stress/boredom?

everything you are going through is something we all have gone through, just look in some of the older posts here and you will find a wealth of information. Regret and stalls all come with the territory so to speak.
