I'm on my 7 month journey. Had my first weigh in on Sept. 21st. When I first saw him in March 2015 he seemed to push more towards the band because he has had it done. But I chose RNY because of my families history with diabetes. I have PCOS and very rarely have my period. Maybe 3-4 times a year. My husband and I have actively tried to get pregnant. But my weight keeps getting in the way. Anywho. I'm from Albertville and I have BCBS of AL. I've done a lot of research and I feel RNY is going to suit me best. I was wondering if anyone else in this area has had this done with Dr. GROVES. He said he would ultimately do whichever surgery I wanted. Which made me feel great. Also I have no co morbities. But my BMI is 60. So I'm really hoping I will get approved! I would be heartbroken if I were to be denied! I work graveyard shift so please bare with me if I do not reply in a timely manner. Or if I seem to reply in the weeee hours of the morning. Any friends would be great! Like I said I'm a newbie and I need all the support I can get. Unfortunately I've already run into people who have told me to stay away from surgery. But they don't understand what I've gone through my entire life. It's hard to share with others when all they want to do it tell me what I already know. Anywho. Feel free to share anything with me. I'm usually an open book! Thanks y'all!

Talking to friends and family who have had wls in the past
RnyMallory posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I really just want to rant a little. I have a friend and a family member who I thought had gastric bypass a few years back. Over the years they've gained all of their weight back. One got pregnant twice. I emailed them both saying I was just starting my journey to rny gastric bypass. And then they told me they had gotten the lap band! But all for all those years they said they had gotten gastric bypass. I don't know if they just used that as an easy way of describing it or what? Yet I know more people who have kept the weight off. And these people have confirmed to me that they really did have the gastric bypass... Which makes sense to me because they are still kickin it with their small pouch. I guess it just irritates me when people aren't as informative as I want them to be. And...! I'm soooo glad I didn't base my decision on them gaining their weight back! But being overweight and then being obese my entire life... I just wish they could have given me a solid answer. I like the people watch and learn from what I see. And I probably would have gotten the surgery about 5 years ago if I could have done my research. Don't get me wrong I know two people personally who have been successful with lap band. But two out of the four I know have failed. Which seems to be the average of failed lap bands anyway. Another reason why I'm just going all out and getting Gastric bypass done. Among other things. -
Talking to friends and family who have had wls in the past
RnyMallory replied to RnyMallory's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I think they tend to associate gastric bypass to the show on TLC my 600lb life. And that you have to be on your death bed in order to get it done. Its the golden standard wls. I have a co worker who has the band who's been successful with it. But she has told me she almost died because of it. Yet when would do it all over again. The people who say its too extreme don't realize that the lap band can harm just as well. The main reason I don't want it is because my surgeon said you can work against them lap band and basically eat things that won't "stop up" the hole. Basically not giving you as much restriction. Any who I can go on and on! -
Please Help......RNY and Nicotine Test
RnyMallory replied to Sande's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nicotine can be present up to 30 days after you use it. And your metabolism also plays a role on how fast it clears the body. Congrats on quitting! I'm quitting myself! I've only been smoking for 8 years.. But it still seems like a lifetime. It's very hard to quit cold turkey! And I commend you on that! Great job! -
Wish**** wish you all the best!!!!

Gastric bypass vs sleeve
RnyMallory replied to shay_shay209's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I chose Gastric Bypass because.... PCOS, acid reflux, family history of diabetics, my BMI is slightly over 60, was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension aka pseudo tumor cerebri (obesity related), hearing stories of everyone converting to gastric bypass. So it's basically the last conversion on the list.... I just know it's perfect for me. =) -
Exactly! I wont be telling anyone else until closer to if not when I get to the acceptance stage with the insurance. I've made up my mind and some people just think its easy. It took me two years to lose 60lbs. And then a little over a year i gained it back plus 40 for a total of 100! It irritates me how much weight I've lost through the years. I'm SO glad you said the time goes by fast! That makes me feel so much better!

I'm new here too! So far I've been able to tell my close family. And a couple really close friends. But I've run into some who are against it. And some who want to be my "personal trainer". Really? I have lost weight time and time again. I just want to be able to take back my life. I've been overweight since I was in 3rd grade. I still have 6 months til I submit my ins. But I wanted to get to know some people on here to help prepare me for anything that may come my way.
