    Road to revision

Same band story here. [emoji1327] Banded in 2008. Couldn't tolerate fills. Hospitalizations. Lost 90 lbs but gained it back plus some. Reflux. Complications. I revised to bypass July 20th and have lost 109 lbs in six months.

    Questions

Personally, i have lost at the same speed as a first time bypass patient according to my doc (i was band to bypass). The band just didn't work for me.

Eating sweet stuff and not dumping?

Me too. Only a small percentage of bypass people have dumping.

    Revision

I had lapband to bypass surgery July 20th (exactly 5 months ago) and I've lost 91lbs since surgery. Revisions do work!

    Surprised about vitamin levels

Do you do B12 shots? I just had the same bloodwork done in preparation for my six month visit too, and my B12 was too high. But I had just gotten my monthly B12 shot that morning.

What Were Your Thanksgiving Triumphs and Tribulations?

Thanksgiving Day, I had blueberries for breakfast. They got stuck and I was sick all day and unable to eat Thanksgiving dinner with my family. Instead of being sad about not having the food (like I thought I'd be), I just sipped my water and enjoyed talking with all my family. Instead of feeling like I was missing out, I just felt really thankful for all the weight I've lost and the good restriction I have.

Thanksgiving and not being able to eat.

I had my surgery 4 months ago, and today I haven't been able to eat a single bite of food without throwing up. I sometimes have days like this. My dietician says as long as I can get fluids down, just go with it. If I can't get fluids down, then go to an ER. So that is the advice I was given, and it works for me. I have occasional 1-3 day episodes where I can only get in fluids and it is ok. Within a day or two I can usually eat my 3oz of food again. I have learned to just be thankful for good restriction. Today I couldn't enjoy one bite of Thanksgiving food, but I am thankful that the surgery is working so well for me.
  8. Way to go! You inspire me! My stats are almost identical to yours, so those gives me hope that this will continue to work!

What is the one food you cannot eat since bypass?

Decaf coffee [emoji20] For some reason when I try to drink it it gives me hypoglycemia or something weird. I start to get shaky and have low-blood sugar type symptoms. I only put Splenda and sugar free creamer in it, so I don't know why it happens. I miss a nice warm cup of coffee.
  10. Best decision ever. Had the band 8 years and was miserable. All the weight came back and I had pain and vomiting. Had my revision two months ago on July 20th, and I've lost 56 pounds since surgery morning. Bypass works very well.

    Hot food?

I'm two months out and have a couple times had just a tiny bit of hot sauce in the last week or two. No issues. I'm on prescription antacids, so that probably helps keep heartburn away. It is difficult to not drink for 30 minutes when something is really spicy.

    Hospital Stay

My revision ended up being a three night stay.
  14. Two months post-op. Everything was going great. Didn't chew grilled mushrooms well Saturday night. Threw up mushroom chunks all day yesterday. Could barely keep down water. Today, mushrooms are gone but can still barely keep down water. A little is getting through, but I've thrown most water up today while at work. I called nurse practitioner at my surgeon's office but still waiting for her to call me back. I am guessing vomiting has caused a swollen pouch. Has anyone else been through this? Thoughts? Advice? [emoji20]

    It's Official...

Chuy's is the bomb-diggity. I wish the creamy jalapeño sauce was low-cal.

    Surgery date before approval letter?

My surgeon's office did the same thing. Scheduled my surgery day for June 28th, before submitting everything to insurance. I went on the two week liver shrink diet and everything. Two days before my scheduled surgery, my insurance denied the surgery. I was heartbroken. I spent all of July battling insurance, but it all worked out.
  17. I am going to call and get advice from my doctor in the morning. But for tonight, I would appreciate any advice anyone can give. I am 6.5 weeks post op band to bypass. I have had not one single issue for six weeks. All stages of food went down with no problem. I was getting in all required fluids, Protein grams, and Vitamins. My NUT at the 6 week visit was very pleased and cleared me to begin solid food of any texture. I went home and tried a cheddar cheese cube. Then, I threw up for the first time since surgery and experienced sharp stomach pouch pain for several hours. I thought maybe I didn't eat slow enough or something. The next few days I continued to try small portions of solid food with no issue. I felt lots of restriction but could get an ounce or two down. Yesterday, I managed about 3 oz of salad including raw veggies. Then today for lunch I had a couple of bites of chili, which I have been eating the past few days with no issues. Then, I started throwing up and have had lots of restriction the rest of the day today. I can get small sips of Water and premier shake down, but I have to go very slow and there is slight pouch pain. It feels like it did right after surgery again. So, do you think it sounds like a stricture, swollen/irritated pouch, or this is normal when starting solid foods? I appreciate any advice or shared experiences.

Stomach still not liking protein shakes

When I first started the Premier shakes, I started with half a shake a couple times a day. That made it much easier to drink. Then after a couple weeks, I added a little more until I could comfortably drink the whole 11oz shake.

LapBand to RNY-tell me how it's different!

Had my band to bypass five weeks ago and it was one of the best decisions I ever made! It is like going from a Hyundai to a Mercedes-Benz. With my lap-band things would get stuck, I would throw up, sometimes things would catch, there would be that painful catch in my chest, I was so tight in the mornings that I struggled to get down meds, and so loose at night that I could eat a buffet with no problem. With the bypass, I have no more pain, no catches, no throwing up so far, my stomach is the same all day long and I can take my pills in the morning or drink/eat with no pain or issues. I just feel naturally full, the way life was before the band, but no choked-off tight in my chest feeling. This is a natural feeling.

    water & proteins

I have to have thinner protein drinks, the pre-made ready-to-drink kind to be able to drink them. The blended kind is too thick for me and I can't get it all in. But for fluids, I literally have a cup in my hand at all times all day. Even when I go somewhere or to work it is with me. That is the only way I can take small sips every couple minutes to meet my fluid goal for the day. I found a huge 32 oz cup with lid and straw (I know straws are sketchy but so is dehydration) so that I can take it everywhere (work, stores, church, etc) and not worry about spills. Also, since I know it's 32 oz, I know I just have to go through two cups per day. Then I just sip like its my job, even when I don't want to. All day long. This big plastic cup has become my permanent accessory. I hope that advice helps! [emoji4]

    Don't feel full?

I had no problem when I started eating thicker things like scrambled eggs, yogurt, hummus, etc everything went down fine. My surgeon makes bigger pouches. She makes them 4oz at surgery instead of two, so maybe that's the reason for not ever feeling full or satisfied? I'm measuring an only eating 2-3 ounces just to be conservative.

    Don't feel full?

I knew I wasn't the only one lol!! But I keep hearing from people I know that they couldn't eat more than a bite or two and were "completely stuffed" Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Nope. I feel like I could either eat nothing for days or eat buckets of food and not have any sensation either way. So weird. Thank goodness I have a guide to follow and just eat the measured amount. I wouldn't know when I was hungry or satisfied if I had to listen to my own body. Hopefully that will change in the future.

    Don't feel full?

I completely understand what you are saying! I am almost a month out (on the 20th) and it is just such a different feeling to not have any feeling. Before surgery, when I ate something I could feel the difference in my stomach. Now, I feel nothing. I stick to my measured portions, but it's weird because I never feel hungry, satisfied, full, or anything. It will take some getting used to if this is the new norm.

    Was that dumping?

I am a week and a half post op band to bypass. Today I had 2 oz of sugar free Jello and ate it way too quickly. I wasn't really paying attention while I ate and ended up eating it all pretty fast. About ten minutes later, I got hit with diarrhea and then started feeling dizzy and trembling a little. I had to go lay down and felt better about an hour later. Was that dumping syndrome?
  25. That is awesome! You are such an inspiration!
