Help! I think I eat too much.
cookarue replied to sarahbrianna723125's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'd recommend just measuring out your food. Then after a couple of months you'll be able to eyeball it. -
Did anyone's spouse lose attractiveness when they got close to goal?
cookarue replied to Chrystee's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I said it once, and I'll say it again - there will ALWAYS be someone prettier than me, funnier than me, thinner than me, and fatter than me - but my husband married ME. Does my husband think, the more of her the merrier? Yes. But there will be nobody else who is me, and that is why I know he still loves me. He didn't marry me because I'm physical perfection (lord knows), or because I'm always so sweet (I've got good days and bad), he married me because we have the same drive, we can tolerate each other when we're out of line, we accept each other's imperfections, and we work daily to make things work. You're married, so I know there's been other things in your time that have come up, and you've worked through. This is another one of those things. So what you're not his physical idealness? We're there not other women he looked at on the planet and thought they were pretty (before surgery)? I'm sure there were, and they will exist after surgery as well. But no other woman will ever be YOU, so unless he's told you he doesn't love you, believe that he does love you... No matter your size. I told my husband it's helpful if he lies to me and tells me how wonderful I look, lol. He laughed, and he said "but YOU are wonderful". I'm sure your husband thinks you're wonderful too. -

I didn't know! A tale of woe

Why don't you just cancel your Kaiser insurance? No need to double up. Especially since TriCare is great and easy to work with in my opinion. -

Do People Treat You Differently Now?
cookarue replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I never noticed anyone treating me differently. In the past I haven't received any criticism on my weight, and now I don't either. There was only one time I was at a store and the store clerk asked me if what I was carrying was a diabetes bag, I said no it's a makeup bag and I carry my wallet in it. Then later, when I thought about it more, I thought he must've said that bc I was fat. I don't know that for a fact though because he was very nice while checking me out of his land and making (positive) comments on my purchases. How I feel about myself, however, has changed a great deal. I do feel better about myself, and that's a sure thing. -
I've tried pro-yo. It's like a protein yogurt, 20g of protein. The flavor I've had is only ok, it just tastes like a frozen protein shake.

Did your taste buds change?
cookarue replied to MozzaWehsha's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Can't do anything sweet myself. Apple juice tastes like straight sugar to me. Also, bread tasted like pure flour (gross). So far chicken has been the best with salsa, my menu has been pretty limited because of my changing pallet. -
You're welcome! I'm working towards goal. I started at a size 20 (tight) and I just got a 14! My bypass was 12/29. Can't wait to be a size 8 either lol.

The bypass is the golden standard for weight loss procedures. There are many people who get revised from sleeve to bypass. I take medications, and never needed a higher dose of anything. As far as I can tell the lack of absorption means that, no you won't absorb everything you put into your mouth, so you won't get those calories either. Which is a good thing if you're trying to lose weight and maintain for the rest of your life. Both surgeries you have to take Vitamins daily. I, too, was concerned about hunger. Before surgery I was worried that I'd be hungry still, well no - not for weeks and months. I am 2 months out and my hunger is returning, BUT a tiny meal and I'm stuffed for hours. Lol. I am able to feel very satisfied all day long on about 400-500 calories a day. However, Head hunger (cravings) won't be going away with either surgery. Also, the complication rate is less than 1% with the bypass. Higher than the sleeve? Sure, but still it's very unlikely. I've gone from 237 hw to now 189 in 2 months. Good luck to you on whichever surgery you decide.

The first few weeks I had a horrible time getting in liquids. My doctor didn't make us start protein drinks until 3 weeks out. You're still very swollen from your surgery, so give yourself time to heal and patience. Eat what you can, but don't sweat the fact you're not eating much. Right now, just focus on hydration. Make sure you get that fluid. Dehydration is the worst! As time goes on you'll see that eating won't be as painful. I noticed that warmer foods sat better with me. Soup, refried beans, sweet mashed potatoes, ECT.

Phantom Fat/Body Dysmorphia
cookarue replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you so much for posting this topic. I honestly feel like this might be the case for me. I've lost almost 50 pounds, and I can't tell in the mirror at all. I check my weight and that is confirmation that I am smaller, the number is reliable, my eyes - are not. I can compare pictures and see a difference, but not in my mind. I keep wondering if I'll just one day accept that I AM smaller than I was, and actually see it. I don't stare in mirrors all day, but I do compare myself a lot. I've wondered also, if it's because my stomach(s) are still shaped the same way and that's why I still look the same to myself. Maybe a tummy tuck after I hit goal would allow me to believe I actually AM thinner. Who knows. Great article. -
Teriyaki chicken is usually a good bet very little sugar, high protien. When my husband went to panda express I ordered this in a small. I was able to finish it and it was very moist.

Did you have this emotional response to your WLS?
cookarue replied to MozzaWehsha's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I live on a military base and when I look around I notice EVERYONE'S weight. Not just my own. I put people into categories now, and I didn't do that before my surgery. Needless to say, I'm bigger than lots of these girls walking around here - and I've lost 45 pounds. I'm embarrassed to walk around outside or go to the grocery store. Before surgery, these things didn't bother me. I think I just never really realized how big I was. I look in the mirror now and I honestly don't notice my weight loss at all. If I compare pics I can tell, but that's about it. So, unfortunately, my body image hasn't improved. I wonder if I'll always feel like this, or I'll get used to being smaller eventually. -
5 weeks since I've had surgery and I'm here!! Very excited for my future. My husband is deployed now, due to come back in April so I can't wait to surprise him with my weight loss. He just left last Tuesday, so I'm excited to celebrate with everyone here.

Thank you all. Today I was 193. I can practically taste 180.

You look fantastic!!! Great work! -
I'm 5'2 went into surgery at 223 pounds. I'm like 7 weeks out and I'm 193#. I had gastric bypass, and I'm very excited to be skinny too. Lol. I don't have any co-morbitites either, and I got the surgery to #1 lose weight #2 Stay healthy My luck wouldn't stay good for long at my old weight, it was a matter of time before something happened. So, to all the nay-sayers...I wish I would have done the surgery sooner. Not bouncing up and down in weight from diet to diet. If it was cancer, and not being overweight, nobody would say anything about taking preventative measures... Good luck!!

Why can't you just eat less? Getting family to understand
cookarue replied to Rvamom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why do you have to tell them if you're concerned about their reactions? I only told my mom, sister and husband. I haven't shared this with everyone else because I don't need their approval, or unwanted advice. If you feel like you have to tell them, then let them know ahead of time that if they don't have anything nice to say, they shouldn't say anything at all. -
6 days post op and ready to gnaw off my arm. HALP
cookarue replied to RNYDawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets better I promise. These feelings you're having, I had too. Just think of it as self control exercises. Later down the line this will actually help you to say no to other cravings you might be having. You're going to get past this, and it's not going to last forever. It's just temporary. -

What made you choose this surgery vs others?
cookarue replied to bigjim1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got the bypass because it's the golden standard. Nothing else has proven results for long term weight loss like the bypass does. I got bypassed at 223 pounds, so I don't think that it's only for "super obese" people. It's just proven to work for everybody. Decision made.
