I just got my surgery date 3/23....
-
I'm going to say that at almost two weeks out I can drink fairly well. I had a hernia repair too to that may be slowing me down a bit but if I go slow and feel for it I can definitely tell when I'm getting full and it happens fast with anything of substance. Liquids do go down better but not like before surgery for sure. Also, I just want to add that the biggest hurdle for me has been emotional. I'm thanking God for my kids and boyfriend because if I didn't have them I don't think this would be as successful an experience for me.

sugar free Popcicles, Jello and Crystal Light. I've been doing Isopure... But frozen! Yummmm! Trying that!

I wouldn't say bad but it's everything that was described to me by medical staff going in. I'm having to push myself to walk and drink... It feels like it would just be so much easier to lay down and sleep through this first week or so but so much ground can be lost in doing so PLUS the risk of blood clots and dehydration... Keep moving and sipping.

Going home today... Ready to get going on the next part of my journey! We can all share here how is everyone doing?

How long do you think it realistically takes to get back to a seated desk job?

A few days ago I had my regular appointment with my Rheumatologist who monitors my injections of Humira for my Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis. I advised him that I had started on a path towards weight loss surgery and I wanted to get his input towards med management after, etc. He basically told me my weight is definitely a factor in some of the issues he's involved with treating, my med regimen won't need to change and with weight loss most patients find relief of symptoms BUT. (Ugh, there it is.) But, he has some patients that have had the surgery and been successful but tell him they 'wish they would have just eaten correctly prior to getting the surgery and they wouldn't have needed it.' I get that point. I still felt agitated and a little insulted. I have tried eating correctly but I can't sustain it long term and gain it back plus and weight loss is very slow for me. Also, with my conditions and recent injury (broken leg/ankle) if I don't get some weight off exercise is a very slow build that may not get much of anywhere, but I'm working on it. Am I flawed in thinking that weight loss surgery is going to help me? Aren't there factors having to do with hormones the stomach produces etc. that will be impacted? If I've done my research and listened to my WLS Doctor why is this Doctor's conflicting attitude shaking me so bad? This is common, right? Help talk me down a bit please.

LOL... He was fit but I wouldn't say skinny. He's definitely never had a weight challenge.

Gastroparesis and Bariatric Surgery
gobeit posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got the results from my EGD and some additional testing they did as a result (Gastric Emptying) and I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis though I'm not 'presenting' with the more severe symptoms... (Yet?) I was originally slated for the sleeve. My doctor said he is still leaning towards the sleeve but it's important that I understand that if the portion of my stomach that is left is not functioning properly I would have to then have the sleeve converted to a bypass, probably within weeks of the initial surgery. Scared. Worried. Feeling like my shot at a real life change just got really complicated if not shut down... Anyone else hit this particular hurdle? -
Gastroparesis and Bariatric Surgery

My doc recommended I get a second opinion just so I feel comfortable. The practice he recommended I see for second opinion is booking into May 2016 and that is past my planned surgery date. I left him a message explaining and I haven't heard back from him yet. All that said I really feel like I can trust him. He's not pushing me rather just letting me know the best vs worst case scenarios I think. It's just a really hard decision. -
Since my issues are generally auto-immune issues it is very probable I will see improvement or complete relief of symptoms. That being said, if I don't get the weight off the same auto-immune issues are directly related to diabetes and fatty-liver. I'm doing this surgery. I really believe I can work the program and it will help get me back to good health. Thanks for the input

YES. He basically put it in such a way that suggested if I just did the right things now I could lose... However, my metabolism is dead and my primary care physician that first referred me to my WLSurgeon has worked with me to try to get weight off and seen the issues I'm struggling with. I have and still am trying. I'm simply not seeing progress. He absolutely made the other patients out to be regretful and I feel that is probably misinterpreted on his part. Of course we would all rewind to a heathy slim body if that was ever an option for us. Some of us, like me, have never really had a thin baseline we trashed. I like many have battled my weight my whole life.

I thought there were other benefits to the surgery other than simply making us temporarily eat less... Otherwise what assists us from eating through? I know a significant number of folks regain due to not sticking with the lifestyle. What separates the surgery from simply doing it on my own? There HAS to be a difference. Right? Otherwise, why would we do this to our bodies? I'm feeling confused. :-/

I'm wondering about folks that had one surgery in mind and then were recommended to switch by the physician. I'm absolutely sure this is what I want to do but I'm a little conflicted about the type of surgery. I want to make the right choice. Medically, I think the sleeve is probably the answer. I'm very concerned about the time out of work and being down and unable to take care of my kids. I'm not due for surgery until Feb/March next year so I have some time but I need to feel better about my decision. Right now I'm committed to the Gastric Bypass vs. my original choice of Lap-Band. I really don't have a strong support system post-surgery though. I just need to be sure I'm doing the right thing and I'm not sure how to get there. I thought hearing about what others went through may help.

I'm Just Starting the Process and Need a Buddy/Mentor...
gobeit posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm in Delaware and I will probably be having surgery late Feb or March 2016. My doctor is Dr. Irgau at CHRIAS. I have a million questions and started out wanting the band but my doctor has recommended the Gastric Sleeve. I'm also wondering about folks that had one surgery in mind and then were recommended to switch by the physician. I'm absolutely sure this is what I want to do but I'm really conflicted about the type of surgery. I want to make the right choice. Medically, I think the sleeve is probably the answer. I'm Just Starting the Process and Need a Buddy/Mentor...

@@ShrinkingPeach thanks for the insight! I have a desk job and my kids are all teen or almost teenage - so no heavy lifting My middle child is Autistic and goes nuts when the routines change so that's more my concern for down time. Although, he's my real driver for doing all of this as he will likely live with me through his adult years. I need to be here, healthy and able to function well for him for the years to come. I also have the same foreign body concerns. I can't even wear a pair of earrings that aren't gold or I have a reaction... I've wondered what my body will think of the band contraption. My only reasoning for wanting the band - or so I told myself initially - was the decreased downtime. In considering it more I felt like I was hanging on to an element of control. Filling and decreasing, if issues arose it was potentially reversible... but after considering those factors fully and talking to my doctor I realized this process isn't something you can turn on and off. It's a commitment for life with any option you choose. That's what finally turned me around and allowed me to commit to the sleeve with my doctor. I'm becoming more sure of the decision to sleeve vs. band all the time. This decision is so huge. I didn't want to feel like I was making a decision on a whim because of a conversation with my doctor. I'm glad you responded - the information from folks in the same situation I've found myself in really helps. -
I'm likely Feb or March '16 sleever as well.

GERD---Gastric Bypass vs Sleeve
gobeit replied to animallover1247's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the hernia theory... They just diagnosed my hernia and told me it would be fixed when I'm sleeved and will likely stop my reflux. I take meds for GERD daily. There is something to be said for those that have a combination of medical issues and the amount of weight they have to lose factoring into the doctors recommended treatment... Possibly GERD may be a lesser evil in considering other things the patient has to overcome? -
I'm in Dover. Just joined and had my consult, my first Nutrition class. I'm really happy to find folks here locally and Doyle's group! I will need support as well. Looking forward to the connections.

I would love to but my daughter's open house is this Thursday. Next month I definitely would love to come. Let me know if that would be the 15th and I will add it to my calendar. Thanks for the invite!
