Has anyone kept their surgery a secret?

Hi! I never kept it a secret but I also didn't openly tell people, word of mouth and common sense helped most people figure it out. A lot of friends/family don't even know. If they ask what I've done I tell them but for the most part they just say "wow you look great!" and say thanks and we move on. As for eating at events, I can tell you that not one single person even noticed what I was or wasn't eating. I mingle, drink, snack on food and just generally interact with people and they don't even look at my plate. They're too busy looking at their own! If anyone does ask why you eating so little, a simple "Oh silly me I ate right before coming here!" usually does the trick. I will say that I have had nothing but support and happiness from the people who do know/found out. I'm sorry to hear people try to sabotage you, they are not friends or family and it may be a good idea to stay away from them for a long time after your surgery. Also, if you don't want to discuss your weight loss, deflect. I had one coworker who was obsessed with knowing how much weight I had lost. I answered her in the beginning but I ended up just saying "Oh I don't even know, I don't weigh myself." Another thing I learned is they want to know mainly so they can have the opportunity to talk about their own weight loss journey. Deflect from yourself and direct the convo towards their progress and I guarantee they will forget all about you. Good luck!!!

    Before and After Pics

Whew it's been a hot minute since I've been on this site. I'm 1 year and 7 months post op of gastric sleeve, 177lbs down. Starting weight was 470lbs so I still have a little ways to go but MAN I feel damn good. Lost a lot of weight, a lot of hair and gained a lot of happiness. Also some weirdness but whatever. Anyways, on to what everyone wants to see, some before and afters! (FYI - I'm 5'10" if that helps put things in perspective)

    Losing too fast?

I lost 100lbs in 5 months and none of the doctors/surgeons were concerned. The only time you need to worry about it is if it's because you physically can't eat (vomiting, nausea, etc), are an alcoholic, drug addict or have an eating disorder. According to my surgeon, that is! [emoji4]

    Fruits

Almost 6 months post-op and I can eat any fruits. Well, I can eat anything anyways, I have a sleeve of steel.
  6. Hi! I did a search but didn't find anything specific for this, it was mainly aimed at the marathons and races Disney does. I have been to Disney at varying sizes, I'm currently 386lbs and 5'10" - I'm wondering if anyone has been on the new Seven Dwarfs Mine roller coaster while still fat? What was your experience? I'm going tomorrow and while I have lost 80lbs, I still worry I won't be able to fit in it, I've seen mixed reviews!! Any help is appreciated

    Why the low carb?

    I believe it was 14oz a week.
  12. Do you have myfitnesspal? I really suggest using it for about a week, see where you're at and if you can find anything that You should improve on (getting more protein/water/calories/less carbs). Do you have easy access to your nutritionist? When I was in my stall, I sent all of my logs on myfitnesspal to my nutritionist to have her look over them and give me her assessment. Naturally, she said I needed more protein. Either way, it's a good idea to really try and utilize the nutritionist as much as possible. Also, genepro protein powder has 30g per 1 tablespoon - it's amazing! Amazon has it. Check it out, it may help you more than you realize.
  13. I understand where you're coming from. We are surgery date buddies, but I had the sleeve. However, I only recently have begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had a lot of physical pain as well for a long time. It was miserable. My mental health suffered greatly because of it, not to mention my best friend and coping mechanism, food, was gone. I have started seeing a therapist and am feeling better. I won't tell you "it gets better" but I will tell you that we are both still "newbies" and we have a long road to understanding how our new bodies work. Also, I suggest doing all of the research that you can on any of your pain/medical issues. Have you looked in to medicinal marijuana for the nausea? There are forms of it that have the THC removed so it's legal and it doesn't get you high, if you are opposed to that. It works wonders for people going through chemo which causes intense nausea/vomiting. I HIGHLY encourage speaking to a therapist. Without fail, the day before my therapy appointments I tell my friend, "I don't think I'm going to continue seeing my therapist after this. I don't think i need it!" And without fail, I leave the appointment having gained some insight and understanding in to how my mind works and how to cope. It's been invaluable to me. There were days that I couldn't get out of my bed. I didn't shower for nearly a week once. I had no desire to eat, sobbed uncontrollably and multiple times I thought, "I wish I were dead." I got the help I needed and it's been a huge change for me. Go to your surgeon and have a long, serious, intense talk with them about your medical problems and how you feel about the surgery. They probably have resources and options for you that none of us can suggest. Utilize WLS groups, there's nothing more powerful than a group of people who have been through the same situation coming together to lift each other up. Please, I really hope you read through these messages and understand that we're not saying these things to force you to think "my RNY was the best decision ever!!" If you never feel that way, then okay. No one should fault you for it. You're right, this is not the easy way out, but it's your way now and you can either utilize all of the options that are available to you, listen to the advice of the people who have been in your shoes or can understand your struggle, and maybe help yourself to see that light too. Good luck, I hope you keep us updated.
  14. I understand, I'm in a stall too. The only suggestions I've gotten from people/my NUT - increase water and protein, add HIIT to your workouts, and just relax. Maybe you should try getting to 1,000 calories a day? I'm only 6 weeks out and my nutritionist wants me to eat between 700-1,000. Also, I was told that if you're doing the same intensity/type of work out, your body can get used to it and that could have an effect on your stall/plateau. Hope this helps! We'll get through this! Oh, I've also stopped weighing myself and am only measuring myself once a week. That helps with the mental aspect of it.

    What Is Your Biggest Fear?

I'm only 5&1/2 weeks out and so far everything is going smoothly, but I fear possible complications that can arise within the 6 month post-op phase. Right now my biggest fear is that I'm doing something wrong, or not working as hard as I should be toward losing weight. I've been in a stall for 3 weeks and I feel like it's because I'm doing something incorrectly. I'm also afraid that I'm not going to start losing again for several months and then my window of optimal weight loss will be even smaller for the massive amount of weight I have to lose. I know, I know, I've heard/read all the "embrace the stall" posts but I can't think that way every day. I'm also very afraid of plastic surgery. I know I will need to get it, but the cost and pain terrifies me.
