Eating & Drinking question
Dar200 replied to CINNAMON 2015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have done really well on your weight loss! I received an outline from my nutritionist showing what to have each day. It set out the amounts of liquids and food to take in the first week, second week, etc. From that, I was able to plan out my meals for the week. This helped me with grocery shopping most of all. I don't really stick to my plan all the time, but it is easy to substitute, for instance, 2 ounces of turkey breast for 2 ounces of some other Protein. It has helped me get into a routine which I really needed. I also write down what I eat and drink during the day so that I know if I'm meeting my protein and Water requirements. If something along those lines doesn't help, I suggest that you meet with your nutritionist. That would actually help most. -
How are things going for you? I hope you are feeling better and that you're getting some relief.

How can I reduce inflammation without NSAID?
Dar200 replied to Dreamagain's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I go to a pain management doctor and so far he is stumped about this. One of his nurses suggested Turmeric which is an herbal remedy. I have been taking it for about two weeks and I think it is actually helping. It is a natural anti inflammatory. It comes in capsules but you can open the capsule and mis the powder with a little applesauce or sugar free pudding. I just use about a tablespoon of pudding and make a really thick paste and try to gulp it down in one swallow. The herb is what they make curry powder from so the flavor is pretty strong. I always take it with a meal. I'll post again if they come up with any other solutions. -
What do you eat for breakfast?
Dar200 replied to Hagengirl3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P3 is powdered peanut butter. It has a whole lot less fat than regular peanut butter. You can add it to a chocolate protein shake for yum if you like that combination. Or I just add water to it, make a smooth paste and eat it on a few peeled apple slices. It doesn't taste like real peanut butter, but it tastes very peanutty and is a nice protein switch once in a while. Sometimes I will eat it by itself, I think it would be good on celery too if you want to keep carbs low. I think real peanut butter would cause me to dump, but this does not. They have it at my grocery store on the aisle with health food and protein bars/shakes. You can also order from Amazon. Oh, they have a peanut and a peanut/chocolate flavor. -
I had surgery 10/26/15 and still have a lot of trouble with gas. Gas X strips work for me.

Unflavored Protein Powder
Dar200 replied to Mariaike's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Use the Unjury unflavored powder. I have been mixing it with a package of no sugar no fat instant pudding mix and Fair Life milk for a high protein pudding. Fair Life milk has higher protein than regular milk so I end up with high protein pudding. It is very easy to eat when I'm having trouble eating. -
I've tried several and Isopure is the only one I can stand. On days when I'm having trouble eating, I use it. It's not really a protein water exactly, more like a clear protein drink in fruity flavors. It is thicker than water. Protein2O didn't work for me.

Sounds like it would be a good idea to get a second opinion. Schedule a first visit and think of it as if you are interviewing the doctor. You are the customer about to purchase a service (surgery) that will change your life forever. It would be ideal to get matched with a doctor who puts you at ease and who makes sure you understand the surgery and that you are comfortable with the choice. I wish you well.

That's a great and sweet accomplishment! Way to go!

I found one at Walmart.

My list said soft canned fruits with no sugar added (in their own juice) fruits. Like canned pears or little mandarin oranges. You can mush them up because they are real soft. Said not to eat bananas because they are too sweet and can cause dumping.

I had RNY October 26, 2015. In my case, I had much less pain than I expected. The day of surgery was bad, but a lot of that pain was from gas. Day two on wasn't that bad. And I have a very low tolerance for pain and I'm a total wimp about it. Overall, much less pain than I anticipated. I had discomfort for two weeks or so from gas, but tolerable from a self-confessed wimp.

Tingling and numbness?
Dar200 replied to shadowsoldier's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope everything goes well for you. Sounds like you've been through a horrible ordeal. @jamesmarusek always has great and accurate information. I couldn't add a thing. -
In a handout from my surgeon's office it says the parts of your stomach and intestines that digest fat and sugar are the parts that have been bypassed. So when fats and sugars hit your shorter bypassed small intestine, fluid from all over your body is rushed to that area in order to dilute and get rid of the offensive stuff. So your other organs get stressed from shortage of fluid, some people get headaches, nausea, pain, weakness, diarrhea, etc. it not only feels awful but it is hard on your body. Thats from memory. I'll look it up tomorrow if you need a more complete description. Our bodies eventually recover the function of that part of the small intestine but maybe not entirely. Some people never dump, some are more sensitive. I'm just scared! Lol.

I've only had dumping when I eat too fast. I just get horribly nauseated, some sort of pain in my gut that I don't know how to describe, and I have to stay in bed until it passes or it starts all over again. I'm so afraid of sugar and fat that I get angry if someone (who knows I can't eat it) offers me something that has either sugar or fat in it. Especially if I have declined and explained how it will make me sick. Happened last week. And this person had a lap band she had to have removed so she should have known better or at least been understanding enough not to even offer it to me.

Eating & Drinking question
Dar200 replied to CINNAMON 2015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only three months out and I weigh only once a week. I've been lax about tracking everything a couple of times and I have noticed that I lose a lot more weight when I am tracking. I would swear that I'm eating and drinking the same things, but writing it down somehow takes pounds off. I tried tracking online but I'm much better at carrying around my food diary and filling it in. I have actually started doing a little journaling in it too. -
It will get better! Most of the time I would have to use 3 of the Gas X strips at a time to get relief. My doc said it was ok and it did help. Hang in there!

I would suggest keeping an eye on your temperature as well. I usually run a below normal temp so when I got home from the hospital and started running a temp around 100, I called my PCP. I suspected a UTI so she checked my urine and sure enough that was it. Five days later my temp started back up and I was losing my voice so I went back in. She diagnosed bronchitis this time so another round of antibiotics for me. I don't remember ever having bronchitis before. I think my immune system just went crazy because of losing so much weight (18 pounds) so fast (5 weeks) and then had surgery almost immediately. Keep an eye on that temp and take care of yourself!

Hunger pangs not going away.
Dar200 replied to MPetrelis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just looked at the Metamucil website to check ingredients on their bars. The second ingredient listed is corn syrup and sugar was included a little further down. I guess the person who suggested eating theses bars and drinking a lot of fluid at the same time was thinking the water would make the fiber expand in your stomach so you would feel full. It doesn't sound like they know much about post Gastric bypass surgery eating. Way too much sweetener. It makes your blood sugar go all over the place and will definitely make you hungrier. Also, the fact that the bars plus water will probably stretch your pouch makes them a bad idea. Was this person a nutritionist for weight loss surgery patients? I suggest calling your surgeon's office or the nutritionist you saw pre-surgery. -
What a difference a year makes....
Dar200 replied to Daisee68's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have done a wonderful thing for yourself! Congratulations on your success! Keep it up and good luck on your job search. -
I too have a grouch pouch. I haven't been able to figure out what causes the rumble gut.

The stall is very common in the beginning. I've seen a lot of people talk about stalls being common in week three. Keep up with the protein and fluids. That will make you feel better in the long run. I had my surgery 10/26/15 and I thought I would never start feeling better. Week seven I finally felt better. I'm still very gradually getting better. I still have trouble figuring out what regular foods I can eat. I have cottage cheese every day, I'm glad I like it a lot. I usually have about a fourth cup canned fruit (in juice, no sugar added) with it. I have Premier Protein shake every morning for breakfast. I eat a lot of really soft foods still. I was so wanting real food after surgery until I realized that my pouch rejected most everything. I named my pouch because she is such a brat. I'm still trying foods and I understand that it takes a long time to tolerate meats. I have a hard time with it. My high weight was 278, day of surgery I was about 265, and I weighed 217 this morning. I am so thrilled that I've lost 61 pounds. Sometimes it seems so incredibly slow and then I think about my total lost and it does not seem possible! Stick to it. You will succeed.

Help! I am 3 days post op and I'm struggling!
Dar200 replied to Newlife4nita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took oral pain meds for five days at home. I have a very low pain threshold and I'm a wimp about it. Take them as long as you need them. -
Help! I am 3 days post op and I'm struggling!
Dar200 replied to Newlife4nita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt great on days two and three in the hospital, good first day home. Then on day two home, I felt awful. It lasted two more days until I got more settled into the liquid routine. It made sense to me because I was on IV pain meds and fluids at the hospital. The fluids kept me going one day after hospital, then I was on my own. It hit me like a ton of bricks. But it gets better! Stick it out and just keep sipping! I wish you the very best! -
Are you sleeping better now? I just saw this but wanted to let you know that someone else has this problem. I've had several surgeries and I think it is a reaction to the anesthesia. I will have trouble sleeping for about two weeks, but it always goes away.
