Post op, PCOS and pregnancy prevention, oh my!
SweetPotato replied to recreatingcate's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have nexplanon and it was working awesomely for 1.5 years, but just found out 5 weeks pregnant. Very unexpected. Having it taken out and mirena put in:(. -
Kaiser Northern California (Richmond, CA)
SweetPotato replied to krissyfattofab's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it took me a week from referral to orientation and I had the surgery a few days shy of 3 months after orientation. My 1 year surgery-versery is 10/28. I have lost 165 lbs. Process was super fast and everyone was helpful. Would have had the surgery sooner, but I'm a psychologist in training and wanted to make sure to give my clinic sufficient notice. -
I have the nexplanon implant and it's kind of amazing...

I think that's a narrow view of what is right for relationships. We all have different ideas of what we are or are not willing to disclose at the beginning of a relationship and must do what is right for ourselves. As a person who is trained and sees couples in therapy who struggle in their relationship, I think I have a pretty good idea of the importance of both boundaries and communication. Additionally, I don't "hook up for an hour", but even if I did, that would have no bearing on my value as a person or a potential partner for someone. Nor would that be true for any other person who engaged in casual sex. Our worth isn't, and shouldn't be, attached to our sexual activities.

Low carb versus I don't count carbs?
SweetPotato replied to sleever54's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
my program stresses eating protein first, then veg... no room for anything else, so i don't bother cutting carbs. -
I've been dating and having sex since losing weight and haven't mentioned the loose skin or weight loss. no-one else has mentioned it, either. Honestly, they just seem to be in to the having sex...i've walked around naked and my loose skin is on full display. I'm 36:)

Nervous about psych eval
SweetPotato replied to ML573663's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having a Hx of eating disorders will not necessarily preclude you from being able to have surgery. They want to make sure that you are stable and able to handle the surgery... And the changes that will happen to your body. A lot of people who aren't stable and have had past experiences with eating disorders return to past behavior patterns, which is why it's important to talk about them. At the same time, you have to make the decision about what is right for you, and what you feel comfortable discussing. Though, speaking as a psychologist in training ( but not giving advice as one), we can often tell when clients aren't being forthcoming about things... -
Hard time losing the 15 pounds
SweetPotato replied to northstar9148's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did a similar plan, minus protein shakes, 3-4 oz protein 2 cups raw or 1 cup cooked low carb veg and 1/2 c higher carb veg or grain ( sweet potato, beans, dry toast, etc) For breakfast was similar, but got 3-4 oz protein (1 usually did 2 eggs and an oz of some kind of lean protein or cottage cheese) 1/2 c lower carb fruit, like berries, and 1/2 c complex carb 1/2 c cooked veg. If I wanted a snack, it had to be protein. No soda, caffeine, straws, gum, beverages with more than 20 calories/cup or 5g sugar. Lost hella weight hella fast and almost never finished my meals. -
When and what to say to your boss
SweetPotato replied to Heatgirl03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I literally just told them I was taking a week off for medical reasons. That's it. As a former HR professional, I know they can't ask for too much more info and I didn't feel comfortable disclosing, -
Sounds like you are using some harm reduction techniques that feel manageable and good for you. Wish you the best of luck and want to say that you may also find it really helpful to seek individual therapy with a person or agency that works with these types of approaches. AA generally only works with an abstinence-based approach and people who aren't ready or don't want to use this approach can often slip back into patterns they aren't comfortable with because of the feelings this may evoke. I say this as a therapist who works with people with substance and alcohol use disorders and have had experiences with AA, NA and CMA.

My fave during that phase was scrambling eggs with cottage cheese in them... Sounds gross but was awesome,

"This was the best thing I ever did"
SweetPotato replied to shotgun72000's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
honestly, i've just been feeling' myself. way more confident overall. i feel good, look good, have hella energy and don't have back pain anymore and my IBS has calmed down. I've always been a good dresser, but now I'm stepping that up even more. I'm also dating more. I've been participating in hella activities, like walking in the Pride parade and AIDS walk that i would have shied away from in the past. also doing little things like taking the stairs everyday, multiple times a day at work and not feeling like i have to circle around to find the closest parking spots... hell... sometimes i take a further one on purpose. -
i also will go with my sister and split something... i just take some of the protein, since restaurant meals are usually so big, it isn't a problem:)
-
a lot of restaurants will allow you to order Protein a la carte... even if it isn't listen on the menu. i often will order grilled chicken, a 6oz steak, salmon, etc a la carte and take the leftovers home for other meals.

skin discoloration has definitely improved for me 7 months out and its almost gone... i have the implant, so can't comment on the periods. Nexplanon gives me nice, regular, predictable periods.

Coffee after Sleeve...
SweetPotato replied to NikkiRT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're right that coffee doesn't dehydrate people, but the headaches are actually due to acute caffeine withdrawal:) Though we don't realize it, our bodies are super sensitive to caffeine...and over time, the lack of it. My NUT doesn't allow caffeinated coffee because caffeine also has a mild diuretic effect and it may increase chance of ulcers, H pylori and acid reflux. Im ok giving up my coffee... totally understand that others might not be, however. -
Psychological Affect of the Surgery
SweetPotato replied to bchas's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Don't rule out therapy or an eval simply based on cost... many cities have low fee clinics (community clinics, as well as ones associated with graduate schools) and many psychologists and masters-level clinicians have sliding scales for their fees. Don't be afraid to ask. -
Women on BCP after surgery
SweetPotato replied to mmorris4's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
idk about the pill... i have the implant (nexplanon) and have had no problems losing weight. i have PCOS and hypothyroidism, so bcp or SOME kind of bc is necessary for me and weight loss has always been super hard. -
I LOVE to entertain and to cook for family....will I be able to post-surgery?
SweetPotato replied to gina171's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i still entertain and bake for people, i just don't jin them in eating the food and i have a designated taster. We forget that those tastes add up... and often times don't fit into our new eating plans. -
my pre-op wasn't liquid. it was 3 meals of 3 oz of Protein, 1 cup cooked veggie or 2 cup raw veggie, 1 starch (1 slice toasted whole grain bread less 80 cals/ 5 saltines/1/2 c beans/ 1/2 c squash/yams) for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was same, except had 1/2 c fruit and 1/2 c cooked veg. get 64 oz liquids. wait 1 hour to drink after eat, 10 minutes to eat after you drink. no beverages with more than 20 cals/8oz, no carbonated beverages, no caffeine, no straws, no gum. it i ended up losing almost 50 pounds.

Anyone morbidly obese and considering the gastric sleeve?
SweetPotato replied to Kwilliams03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my sleeve a few days before Halloween and am now down (including pre-op) 131 lbs. Started at 401.5 now 270. BMI has gone down 22 points. I also am one of the people with PCOS and hypothyroidism and weight has always been a struggle. I worried that the sleeve wouldn't work for me, but it has been working like a charm... albeit very slowly at times. I used to have terrible back pain which is almost gone, reflux issues... gone, GI issues... lessened drastically, and more energy to do things I couldn't do before, like walk up the stairs at work or the hated hills in SF. VSG was seriously the best decision I've made. -
im 6 months out and still obsessed with it... and it still moves around like that some times. it's just a thing it does.

no Cereal, oatmeal, grains, or soft breads for me.
