  1. If you didn't tell people at work about your surgery, how did you explain the weeks gone and the fast weight loss? I told my immediate supervisor and the HR dept in our corporate office but I do not want to tell my colleagues. How did you do it? Any advice?

To tell or not to tell

When I first decided to get WLS, I thought I would tell people. But after my own best friend was unsupportive, I decided to keep it on the down low from friends and coworkers. I feel that most people don't understand the surgery. So I feel that if I tell people, I would have to explain it and pretty much feel like I have to get their approval. Which I obviously don't want. A lot of people tell other people about the surgery because they feel like they can help others in the same boat as you. so that would be a pro for telling. But until I meet someone that would benefit or would want to hear about my journey, I am just going to keep it to myself and say I'm going on a long vacation!
  3. Hey everyone! I haven't started my preop diet yet waiting for surgery date but had a question about it. The preop diet my doctor said will be 4 weeks. I have to drink 3-4 Protein drinks and one meal that consists of 4oz lean meat, fish or poultry with 1-2 cups of veggies. I just realized that I have a bachelorette party weekend to go to about 2 weeks before surgery. How detrimental would it be if I had a weekend full of drinking? I can stick with the diet but it would be unrealistic to say I'm not going to drink. If I am not drinking 26 out of the 28 days of the diet, is it really going to mess everything up?! I mean I have worked so hard to get where I am at that I obviously don't want to mess up the surgery so of it will mess things up, I would miss the weekend all together. But just be honest, did people slip up on their diet? Did it affect the surgery? Thanks!!

    Going back to work?

My doctor told me 4-6 weeks. I can't take off that many weeks so I am planning on 2 weeks. I am getting rny and I have a desk job as well. I asked this question before and some people have gone back after a week and some needed the 4 weeks. I guess it depends on the person. I would plan longer just in case you need it. Good luck!

    Loose Skin

I haven't had the surgery yet but every youtube journey I have watched and every blog I read, they have loose skin. Some have more than others but I think it's inevitable. The more weight you have, the more skin needed to be stretched. I was concerned about it in the beginning but I figured if I'm healthier and smaller, saggy skin doesn't seem so bad.
  6. Wow! Thanks so much everyone for your feedback!! You guys are awesome! The reason why I don't want to tell everybody is because I do work with some judgey people and I don't want to hear their opinions. It's my life and I know what's best for me. I'm not ashamed of my decision. It took me awhile to feel this way and I don't need any negativity in my life! I know exactly what I'm going to say! Thanks all!
  7. Every time I tell someone about getting the surgery, they give me this look and say, are you sure you want to do this? And proceed to give me reasons why I shouldn't get it. I mean I'm not telling everybody because I learned that lesson when I told my best friend but I had to see a doctor and get a physical today and even she gave me the look and questioned me! It just gets old! I've thought about this for years and this is the best decision for me. Why do people feel the need to try to change my mind?

    Doesn't it get annoying?

I completely understand not telling everybody. Because like I said, I learned from my mistake from telling my best friend. I was just annoyed that a doctor was trying to talk me out of it! If you can't talk to your doctor who can you talk to?

    Dating after surgery

Hi all, I haven't had the surgery yet but was curious how dating is after the surgery!? Easier? Harder? I know you can't eat as much so how is going out to dinner? Do you let your date know ahead of time or is that something you disclose after becoming serious. Would love to hear some stories/advice! Thanks!

    Dating after surgery

Thank you al for your responses! I probably won't even be interested in dating for awhile after the surgery as well but was just curious if it was an issue!

  16. I just went to my psych eval and it seemed a bit weird. He said I would have to come back 3 times to know if I can handle the surgery. He asked me one question and then stuck me in a room to do a 344 question test. He says im going to have to do an IQ test too. I know that other people have gone to one session for less than an hour and that was it. It seems like he just wants my business. Has anyone else had this issue? Is this normal? Thanks!

Psych eval - is this normal?

I'm self pay so it's nothing to do with my insurance but how did everybody find the psychologist? Did your doctor recommend them?
  18. The doctor said he wants me out of work 4-6 weeks after surgery. That is a long time to be out of work. I don't think my job would let me be out of work that long. I have an office job so I work 9-5 at a desk so I am hoping I can get back to work after 2 weeks. What do you guys think? Anybody went back to work that early? Would it be ok? Thanks!
  19. Pretty new in the process but hope to get the surgery in November. Just moved to DC and would love to meet some new people especially who know and understand what I am going through! 2 birds with 1 stone!
  20. Hi all, I just recently decided to have WLS. Just went to my consultation. Does or did anyone feel guilty or feel like a failure before going through the surgery? I sometimes say to myself, "why can't I just lose weight the normal way"? I have been dieting all my life and know that if it was that easy to just stop eating junk food and exercise, I would have done that and kept the weight off. I just don't want people to think I took the easy way out. And I know I shouldn't seek people's approval but I don't want to start feeling that way either. I know WLS isn't going to be easy and I'm still going to have to learn how to eat right and exercise but I think this is the best tool to help me get on the right track. Does anyone understand how I am feeling or am I just a lost cause?
  21. Thank you all!! I can't believe how amazing everybody is!

    Anybody in DC area?

Hi all! I'm having the surgery at George Washington hospital. I work in DC but live in Arlington. I moved from Orlando, FL. Look forward to having our journey together and having someone who has been through it before. Thanks guys!
  23. Hi everyone! Found this app and already posted a question on here and got many answers within an hour! So excited to be a part of this wonderful support system. As for my journey, I had my consultation yesterday and my psych evaluation next Friday! Hoping to have the surgery beginning of November. Anyone else had WLS when they were in their 20's-30's?
