    Moving along

Good luck! Keep us updated. It's a long process but totally worth it.
  2. I've been so impatient, and so excited, and suddenly it's time to go. I wouldn't say I'm nervous, but I am feeling so overwhelmed, with so many different emotions. Ahhhhhhh! Wish me luck everyone!
  3. Just got home from the hospital! I'm feeling soo much better than I was yesterday. Walking is still a little difficult for me but I'm doing it as much as I can. Liquids seem to be going down alright, including the skim milk they gave me (so happy I can still tolerate milk! I love milk). I have a ton of gas, though. Any suggestions on how to relieve it? I'm talking about intestinal gas, not the gas pumped in during surgery. That gas is slowly going away from walking.
  4. Thank you for your well wishes everyone... I am leaving for the hospital now! See you all on the other side.

    Curious and confused

All of the different surgeries have their merits, and what is best for one person may not be best for the next person. Really it comes down to how much weight you need to lose, your medical history, current health issues, your own preferences, the list goes on. I chose the RNY (my surgery is early monday morning! yikes!) for many reasons, namely because my surgeon recommended it, I have a LOT of weight to lose, and I am willing to risk more and do more to alter my digestive system because I perceive that it is the right choice for me. I would recommend watching some youtube videos of the different surgeries, perhaps watch some peoples' experiences with the different ones, and ask you surgeon what he or she recommends, as they have a lotttt more experience than any of us. This site is a great resource too, hopefully some other people who have had the various surgeries will be able to tell you some of their own experiences with them. Good luck! Keep us posted.
  6. My bariatric center gave out a list of 15 or so doctors and what insurances they took. I chose the closest one that took my insurance, which was about 20 minutes away. The appointment lasted less than an hour. She took notes, asked me a few questions about my history with food, emotional eating, why i wanted the surgery, where I wanted to be in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, and that was that. No muss, no fuss. Sorry yours seems to be crazy. An IQ test? That's very, very strange... The whole purpose of these evals are to make sure that you're not crazy or that you don't have an eating disorder that surgery won't be able to help.

Psych evaluation in red deer, ab

Had my psych eval a few months ago. My surgery is very early monday morning. The appointment is pretty easy, they just want to make sure you're not crazy and that you're wanting to do the surgery for the right reasons. Also, to discuss any emotional eating issues you may have. Don't sweat it.
  9. That's my time too! Well, 5:45 but close enough!
  10. i JUST got my check in ans surgery time like 5 minutes ago lol. Arrival/check in is 5:45 am, my surgery is scheduled for 7:30 am. It's really happening! o.o
  11. totally understand. keep us updated! I wish you an uneventful surgery and a speedy, painless recovery.
  12. Awesome! You'll do great. Only a couple days for me.. I call in less than an hour to find out what time monday the surgery is.
  13. What is your pre-op diet like? my surgeon basically just wants me to have clear liquids two days before and that's about it... I sort of put myself on my own pre-op diet. XD

    San Diego

My surgery is on Monday! Here are tips I have learned from the pre-op experience. - if you smoke, quit now! Most surgeons won't even admit you into the program unless you quit, and will test your blood to make sure you haven't smoked for at least 6 weeks prior to surgery. After surgery, smoking can be very dangerous for a whole list of reasons. - if you drink soda, quit now! I would also recommend trying to cut back on your caffeine levels in general, because caffeine withdrawal after surgery is going to be just one more thing that makes you feel terrible. - if you eat white bread, Pasta, rice, etc, I would highly recommend reducing the amount you eat as much as you can and switching to a whole grain version. It's a bit more expensive but the doctor or nutritionist you're going to be seeing before surgery is going to tell you to do that anyway. Plus, it helps to cut back on grains in general, as your post-op diet is going to be Protein, protein, and more protein for a long time. - try to be patient. I know what it's like to be super excited and hopeful about this great change in your life, but taking things slow and doing them the right way, and making your body as ready and healthy as possible before surgery greatly increase your chances of long-term success in terms of keeping the weight off and your general health. - my last tip is to spend some time thinking about why you are overweight in the first place. The surgery is amazing, and extremely helpful, and an overall incredible experience, but in the end, it's just a tool that you have to help you lose weight and keep it off. The problems that you have before going into surgery are still going to be there when you come out of surgery, and even though you will lose a lot of weight in the beginning, long-term success is absolutely dependent on your good habits and healthy coping skills. Personally, I had to address a problem I didn't really think I had (emotionally speaking) as a lot of my weight gain came from pre-existing medical issues and just down-spiraled from there. The fact is, we all got heavy for a lot of reasons, and addressing the psychological issues, like emotional overeating, is essential to this entire process and your happiness and health for the rest of your life. Good luck! It's an incredible journey. Utilizing ALL the tools you have, including forums like this, food journaling, therapy, the support of your loved ones, etc, will go a long way towards making this time and the rest of your life amazing! Feel free to message me anytime if you want to talk, rant, ask questions, anything.

    Looking for preop friends :)

@@trudycarle4 I am indeed out of Highland. I'm going to the MONARCH support group meeting tonight at 6:30. I'm pretty sure they have one every month, so if you won't be at this one but can make the next one, it would be cool to meet you and say hey!

    Looking for preop friends :)

YES! I finally got it! I spent the day crying and smiling! I was very full of emotions. Thank you girl! Congratulations Nikikins! I know that feeling and it is fantastic!
  22. Hello! My name is Abby, and I'm 23. My surgery date is August 17th... only a week away now. o.o I'm so glad I found this forum, because most people I've talked to are much older than me and are in a completely different stage in their lives, so it's hard to relate to each other outside of the surgery. But I would love to make new friends with you guys here, as I don't know many people who have had this surgery or plan to have it and are also my age. Are any of you still in college? What does your family think of your decision? Your friends? How many people have you told about your surgery plans, and have they reacted well or badly? I look forward to meeting all of you wonderful people.
  23. So, as the title says, my RNY is only 5 days away now, on Monday! I've reached an emotional point where I feel very little nervousness and a lot of calm certainty that this is the right thing for me, and that my life is headed in a really good direction. I'm not even having problems with the extremely limited 5 day pre-op liquid diet I'm on. I'm looking for general suggestions here on ways I can further prepare my body for surgery. I know a lot of surgeons require a whole bunch of things pre-op, like bowel prep/colonoscopies and such. My surgeon doesn't even really require a pre-op diet, only that I drink nothing but Clear liquids two days before. So I put myself on a 1 week liquid diet. So what are you all doing, or will you all be doing, in terms of body preparation for surgery? Do you take any specific supplements for your hair or skin, or use certain lotions that help with skin elasticity, or eat/drink certain foods to help prepare your digestive tract? I just want to be as prepared as I can possibly be. It's my way of staving off any anxiety I might start feeling. Thanks!
  24. As of right now, I'm to report at 6am for 8am surgery. Hope that doesn't change. Awesome. I'm pretty sure mine will be early morning as well. Best of luck to you, keep me updated on your progress
