  1. Well, today has been a difficult day. However, I am going to focus on the positive. Today marks 13 weeks since surgery (tomorrow is three months exactly) and as of right now I am 60 pounds down since surgery! Knowing how far I've come makes me brave enough to know I can deal with the long road ahead.

Just remember that yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not promised so you need to live today and keep looking at the progress you have made and how much better your health is getting. Taking care of YOU is so important. Have a blessed day.

    Surgery

you'll do great! keep us posted and take good care of yourself.
  3. Today I learned that I most likely have a very big surgery to reconstruct my left ALC coming up... which means six months of pain, limited mobility, and physical therapy. I'm only three months post op from my RNY, and I need the exercise I simply can't get right now, and now won't be able to do for a long time. I feel like I could cry. :(

I don't know the name David Stamps, who Miss Mac wrote about, so his videos are good to know about. There are many, many other chair exercise videos available, incl. Chair Dancing (a series); Sit and Be Fit (also a TV show on many public TV stations. Your public library will have some for loan and can get others on interlibrary loan. You'll find quite a few at sparkpeople.com (check the exercise/video tab); join their Chair Exercise Team, which has a sticky thread of resources far more extensive than what 'm recalling at the moment and Miss Mac's suggestion. A friend who has run marathons, competed in triathlons (not Ironman), skis, etc., went to a chair class w/her elderly mother and reported that it was a valid workout for anyone. There's also a chair yoga video that should help with relaxation. Many Y's and private gyms offer chair classes. If I recall anything else, I'll let you know. You probably should run any chair exercise by your surgeon and PT in case some are not good for you at some time or other during your healing period. You'll be great.

As a "survivor" of ACL reconstruction - never think physical therapy isn't exercise/work! I lost weight during recovery. You burn a lot of calories "learning" to walk again, not to mention fighting pain. Good luck to you! You can do this!!

I had an complete ACL repair and let me tell you I was always working out in therapy! I loved it. The pain was real but honestly the more I worked out in therapy the better it felt ! Look at it as a way to get extra exercising in! you can use a recumbent bike!

Yeah, I honestly think I could only ever join secret groups, like the one run by my hospital's support group. If your whole friends list gets a notification that you joined "bariatric surgery patients" or or whatever you might as well just tell everyone anyway.
  5. Congrats! Thanks for sharing. I'm three months out and this was inspirational.
  6. There are actually a HUGE number of wls patients who develop gall bladder problems after surgery, and those problems are usually worse than a non-wls patient would have because of all the changes to our digestive system. Odds are, if you hadn't had your gall bladder taken out during surgery, you would be in a similar situation now, and/or had serious pain and problems not long after surgery anyway. There are some people who are lucky enough not to have these issues, but the chance is so high and experiences with this sort of thing so common that it makes sense to take the gall bladder during surgery. I'm sorry you've had these problems. If the scans were all normal, are you sure it's a gall bladder issue? There are many things that can cause digestive problems in the average person, and even more things that can cause them in a wls patient. I hope you get it resolved soon.
  7. Tomorrow?! Exciting! Congratulations. The first day was terrible for me in terms of pain but I was so out of it that it barely even registers in my memory anymore. Make sure you get up and walking asap after surgery. Everyone says that, and there's a good reason for that - it's truly the fastest way to start feeling better. Much of the pain is gas pain, and lessening that quickly will go a long way. Good luck! Take good care of yourself. See you on the other side.

    Trial by Social media

I still have not said anything on any social media besides this website. I, too, just don't feel like having to explain and defend my choice to a bunch of "well meaning" but utterly ignorant people. I'm pretty sure no one would be malicious to me, as I simply don't have friends like that. But in my opinion this is the kind of thing people already have preconceived notions about, and it's hard to change those opinions even with education sometimes. Education may change their minds logically but I can say almost for certain that there will people people - even close friends and family maybe - who have already decided to believe that wls is the easy way out, and I just don't want to deal with it. Got enough on my plate (hehe). All in all, the support from your friends and family can be great, but it's up to you if you want to take the chance. I personally chose not to but not everyone has the luck or the sensitive nature I have.
  9. I'll be three months out on Tuesday, and honestly, I don't have a lot of energy for workouts yet. Then again, I've been sort of constantly tired since surgery, even though my bloodwork was normal. some people are able to workout no problem within like a month of surgery, and I have to admit, I'm a little envious of them. Some people, like me, have metabolism issues. I hope I'm able to go a day without needing or desperately wanting a nap soon.

    Molina---- weight loss issue

it depends. is the weight a requirement for insurance or your specific surgeon? If it's insurance, there may be issues. If it's your surgeon's requirement, they may decide to be lenient.

How Often Do You Actually Cook?

I'm only about three months post-op, so I'm still in the mindset of "measure and record absolutely everything" on Myfitnesspal. There have been a few times now where I started planning a crock pot batch of soup, or chili, etc only to remember that I have no way of having exact measurements of every ingredient and I sort of give up. I suppose, for now, I will be sticking to convenient, measured (healthy!) food.

    Hi I'm a newbie

Hello, Leanne. Welcome. I had my bypass August 17th, so I'm very close to three months out. I'm doing really well, no complications, and about 60 pounds lost since surgery. Feel free to friend me or message me anytime.
  13. @@Julie norton I'm so sorry for your loss. You're a strong, admirable person for still being able and willing to take such good care of yourself and others after going through that. Stay strong and inspiring. <3 @@skinnyrita what works for me is substitution. If I know I'm going to smell brownies or pumpkin pie or anything that looks amazing but I can't eat it, I try to have a substitute on hand that will satisfy the craving. Pumpkin pie quest bars are AMZING for this, and I also enjoy the cookies and creme muscle milk pro series shake for when I have a sweet craving that won't go away. Met-rx protein bars are great too because they are really tasty and low in sugar. Salty cravings aren't usually a problem for me because I eat so little salt daily now that I don't feel guilty for spicing/salting my food as much as I want.

    Looking for Post-Op Track(ing) Stars

Keeping track and measuring everything on mfp has honestly helped me so much. I have a really hard time keeping myself accountable with everything but especially food. But I've noticed a huge improvement in how easy it is to set a goal and keep it everyday when I track it. Making the measuring itself easier just improved the whole experience.

    Looking for Post-Op Track(ing) Stars

I think we are already friends on there (I'm Twasarunbyfruiting) so you are welcome to take a look at what I've been eating. I find eating pieces of a meal one at a time to be much easier. For example, I'll eat a turkey meatball and a colby jack cheese stick for a meal, then in a few hours I might have the second turkey meatball (a serving is two meatballs, 12 grams of protein) and an ounce of fat free cottage cheese. Then later perhaps a coupe slices of an apple with a tablespoon of Peanut Butter. It's so much easier for me to just eat very measurable things.

    Diarrhoea 8 weeks post op

I had similar issues on and off basically from the beginning after surgery. Turns out my gut bacteria was off, most likely from the hardcore antibiotics used during surgery. It can really mess up the flora of your intestines. I started taking a probiotic and things have gone back to normal.
  17. Had my first physical therapy/workout session since surgery today. I don't think I've ever been this exhausted, but it also feels good to know I'm finally getting my body back.

I get the hiccups and the bloaty/gassy feeling that would usually have meant I had a big burp.

    Solid food

I'm almost 3 months out, and I have this same sensation when I eat certain foods, namely heavy Protein shakes and ground meat. Are there certain foods that do it more than others? Are you eating very, very slowly? Some people need to eat even slower than is recommended. Usually the full, uncomfortable feeling is either from foods that your stomach just does not like or from eating a little too fast. At least, that's what I have experienced. Hope you feel better soon. I know how frustrating it is to feel sick every time you try to eat.
  21. I got some clothes from a friend yesterday, and didn't think they would fit yet. I just tried on her jeans and I was amazed to find that I fit into them, which means I am now SIX sizes smaller than I was at the beginning of the year! I can't even believe it!

    Getting sleeved in 6 days!

My high weight was 442, surgery date 387. I'm less than three months post op and I was 331 when I weighed this morning. It will feel like nothing is happening until suddenly one day you look in the mirror and barely recognize yourself. I don't even look like the same person, and I'm less than halfway to my goal. You will get there and you will feel incredible when you do.
  23. Either I will get up early or stay up later than I should so that I can take a nice, long, HOT shower. If I can just have like 20-30 minutes in the quiet of a hot shower to decompress, I'm a-ok for the rest of the day.
  24. impatient, excited beyond belief, and a little nervous. Mostly just impatient and excited.
  25. For my pureed stage, I was supposed to eat 3 meals and two Protein shakes, or 4 meals and 1 Protein shake. Here's the plan my center gave me: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/MediaLibraries/URMCMedia/hh/services-centers/bariatrics/documents/Bariatric_Meal_Plan_Pureed.pdf
