What does it feel like right afterwards?
alycopp78 replied to ld33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was a revision from lapband to sleeve so my experience was a bit different and my NUT said my symptoms were prob due to being a revision. I was not really in much pain, but the nausea and dry heaving was horrible. I am not trying to scare you because even with that I would do it all over again. It took about a week to feel normalish. Make sure you have sugar free Popsicles and pedialyte Popsicles stocked. I was barely able to drink which made my symptoms much worse. The Popsicles are the only thing that probably kept my husband from dragging me back to the hospital for dehydration. Again though, almost 5 months out and it was TOTALLY worth it. Good luck. -
Any teachers out there...returning to work?

My advice would be to do planned time off. Just get a note from your doctor and speak with your principal. Extending a vacation with sick days is generally not a good idea unless it is for medical reasons. I think they are less likely to be upset if you are upfront and have a valid medical note. Otherwise they are going to assume you extended your vacation. People are going to notice the weight loss. Just say you are in a high protein low carb diet and using portion control. People are going to assume you had surgery anyway. I was upfront with people, but that's me. If your not comfortable letting people know let them talk and who cares. -
I made all of my favorite appetizers and ate myself sick lol.

I felt the same way! Start experimenting with puréed foods that actually make you feel like your eating real food. My go to during that faze which I just got out of on Monday was refried beans with some fat free sour cream and a small amount of salsa con queso (two tbsp is only 40 calories if you buy tostitos brand). It's like eating a burrito in a bowl. Oh and hummus mixed into some cottage cheese. Both are high protein too. You can do it!!! ????

When did people notice your weight loss?
alycopp78 replied to newbeginnings1965's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think sometimes people notice but are afraid to say anything. I think until it's really dramatic they are afraid they may offend you. The only people who have said anything to me are the people Who know. -
My surgeon did the leak test during surgery as well. He said this way if there was a leak he would not have to put me through a second surgery to repair it.

I too only spent1 night in the hospital. I could never have gone home the same day. I probably should not have gone home the next day either. I was not able to drink at all and was miserable. I didn't fight it though because I just wanted to go home and get into my own bed and be miserable. Make sure you have plenty of sugar free Popsicles and ice for ice chips. If it weren't for those I would definitely have ended up back in the hospital for dehydration.

I honestly needed the full two weeks I took and my first week back was 3 1/2 days followed by a 4 day weekend so only looking at 3 days this week. I don't know if I could have gone back to a full week. I was exhausted by the end of the day and my back was on fire. If you can take off two weeks that would be my advice. I know it's tough, but remember you had a major surgery. I was lucky that I only had to take 1 week of days because I had mine done a week before school started. If you have the days leave great sub plans and see if you can arrange a sub that's dependable. If you go back be sure to stay hydrated. I missed a lot of my water one day and I was really sick that night. Sorry for the long response, but I just wanted to share what I could. -
I had my surgery the day after you and I have also only lost 16 pounds. I did not lose last week at all. Today was the first day the scale started coming down. I started at 214 at 5' 4". It will start dropping again. The 3 week stall is a bummer but it seems to happen to everyone. I changed up my diet alittle and that seemed to help.

The first week is tough, but it gets better. I was nauseous and could not drink anything. Try sugar free Popsicles and ice chips. Once I did that I started feeling much better. I wasn't depressed I don't think, but I definitely had "WTF did I do to myself!" moments. You will be okay!!

I like fat free refried beans with a little bit of cheese (tostitos salsa con queso is only 40 calls. for 2 tbsp.) and fat free sour cream. Very filling and actually has some taste. Cottage cheese with some hummus mixed in is good, and butternut or winter squash. Basically what I have been living on for the passed week and a half.

Surgery tomorrow what to pack
alycopp78 replied to Twinmomma422's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How long will you be in the hospital? I was only over night, but anymore than that I agree with Vanessa. Bring Tampons/pads. I got my period 2 days after as well, not expected, very heavy and has lasted for two weeks now. -

Your pillow for sure. If you have a body pillow take that too it is good for supporting your belly. That was all I used. I honestly didn't brush my teeth for three days, gross I know, but I was so nauseous there was no way I was sticking a toothbrush in my mouth. Good luck to you!! -
I am just about two weeks post-op. And I have had my period, or what I am calling a period but really isn't cause I wasn't due for a while, since 3 days post-op. I know the blood thinners caused it, but I haven't had them in 5 days. Is it ever going to stop?! Anyone else experience this?

I'll try that thank you.

Headed back tomorrow two weeks after surgery. I have been so tired just from mommy/wifey duties the past two weeks (and my boys have been really helping me out) that I am very nervous. Might be in bed very early tomorrow night. -
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this pain I am having. I was sleeved Tuesday and starting Thursday I get this weird burning pain below my ribs that sometimes travels up to my throat. It feels like someone squeezes their way up. I keep telling my husband it's like a muscle contracting painfully. It isn't constant. Sometimes it happens once and goes away, but this last time it was like 10 in a row and that was slightly unbearable.
-
My doc told me to put neosporin anti itch around them.
-
Fortunately this pain has gone away. I have been taking my antacid daily and have been doing well with my water and protein. Not sure what it was or what made it go away, but I am sure glad it's gone. Hopefully it doesn't come back!

I had my period two weeks before surgery as expected and have now had it since three days after surgery. It is heavy and nonstop. I am on bcp so it should be more regular. My surgery was almost two weeks ago. The only thing I can attribute it to is the blood thinners, but I stopped taking those a week ago. Now I'm due for it next week so I'm looking at a month long period!

Stupid things people say when they find out you've had surgery....

My father told me I needed to think about my son and husband and why couldn't I just live with being heavy or eat less. I am thinking about my family and being healthier so I can see my grandchildren. -
Lol good to know in case I am in need of that. It was the unjury today and I've had it before so I'm thrown.
-
Ugh so jealous. I want to chew something lol. It is painful making my son chicken and then sucking down another protein shake. The shakes are actually making me nauseous. Not because I'm sick of them or anything, its hasn't even been a week. Anyone else have this experience. Today every time I sipped one I would break out in a sweat and feel like I was going to throw up.
-
My surgeon says there is no benefit as well. I only had to do clear liquids the day before.
-
@radley- I am sorry to hear you are still doing poorly. I have fortunately gotten much better. I started eating sugar free Popsicles and pedialite Popsicles and it really helped. Do you have a good nausea medication?? My dr. did warn me the day of surgery the nausea could last anywhere from a week to a month and that the younger you were the worse it tended to be and for women compared to men it was worse. Something to do with hormones. Don't know if either of these apply to you. I'm 37 and female so not so much the young end but the women end for sure lol.
