    Running shoes

Just got mine from Zappos. Black and Grey Asics Gel Venture 5 and Saucony Blue and Neon Green Echelon 5. Both feel super comfortable. I have a pair of the asics just like these already. They are great for working out in. They are comfortable because the sole and padding is so soft, but for that reason, they wear out quickly. At the rate I went through the first pair, I will probably go through 3 pairs in a year. Luckily, they are only 60.00. The Sauconys are much more expensive. I will save those for elliptical only days, or days when I wear blue. Have to match my shoes to my workout clothes.

The "You don't need WLS" talk

I was worried about this happening so I limited who I told, however, I still got this from one family member. That family member, my Wife's Sister, is also morbidly obese. I put it to her like this: At what point is enough, enough? I need to get healthy right now. I am diabetic, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I can't barely walk more than a half mile, I have a little girl who needs her daddy. I get no extra credit for how I lose the weight, I just need to lose it. You can decide if the surgery is not for you. You can keep going to seminars and Tony Robbins all you want. We will see how I do with my decision and see how you do with yours. Maybe I will be the success story that will change your mind. Your comment about not letting the surgery work for you is spot on. Everyone says it, and you hear it from all of the doctors and support staff. This is a tool, blah blah blah. But its absolutely true. This surgery does not wake you up at 4:15 to get Protein in so you can work out from 5-6am. It doesn't make you pick the right foods when you are out, or with a group of friends. It does not count your calories and it most certainly does not tell you not to put bad things in your mouth. Congrats on making this decision and for putting in the effort to learn and plan and put yourself in the best chance for success.

    Incentive Spirometer

Hi IJustWant2BeALoser. I actually had my procedure with a surgeon who works in your Surgeons office. Once you schedule your surgery, you will schedule 2 more appointments. The first appointment will be with you and a physician at St. John in Madison Heights. You will go over some information regarding surgery and meet with a couple other doctors to find out what is required of you in the days leading up to surgery. At this appointment you will be given an Incentive Spirometer to practice with. They will ask you to bring it with you to the hospital, but will give you another if you forget it. The other is a group class that will happen somewhere around 7-10 days before surgery. This will be where they go over the pre-op diet and what to do after surgery and while still in the hospital. Best of luck with your pre-op planning. If you can make it, there is a support group meeting in the education building across from the madison heights hospital, on Monday, December 7th. Its always the first Monday of the month, from 6pm till 7:15pm. If you are onfacebook, check out St. John Providence Weight Loss Surgical Patient Group.
  4. I just bought a bike! So excited to get out and ride. For a week. Then will be so excited to ride in the spring!

That is a gorgeous looking bike! When I lose some more weight I'll probably look at getting a new bike to start trail riding, always been a trek fan. My older brother still does a bunch of mountain biking with his trek 930 single track he bought in the early 90s. Have fun!

Thanks @goblue9280. I got the dark grey with red accents. They call it Lava Black but its just dark grey. I love the look of it. I plan on riding a lot on the street or paved trail but also occasionally on dirt or stone. This seemed like a good hybrid to handle both. My price range was more the 8.3 but I paid 8.3 price for a 8.4. The color is what made the difference. 8.3 was only available in gloss black with bright blue accents. Didnt care for that too much.

    3. goblue9280

      goblue9280

@dlappjr I agree on the color, very sharp. That'll work well as a hybrid bike. I have a fully-rigid redline I'm going to start riding again soon. My plan would be to turn it into a commuter with thinner tires if I were to buy a new bike for trail riding.

    What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

I wonder how it would turn out if I stuffed a turkey with crab, scallops, celery, onion, old bay seasoning and breadcrumbs. Crab Cake Stuffed Turkey.

    Running shoes

I had grown to like Brooks and I had a pair of Brooks Addiction that fit great. Ordered the same size and same shoe but in a different color and suddenly had shin splints. This was pre-op. Now I like Sauconys. I actually just ordered another pair from Zappos and hope they fit as well as the previous model. I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to find a shoe you like, only to go to replace a worn pair and find out they stopped making that shoe. It has happened to me the last 3 pairs I wore out.

    What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

3 months out. I am having a few bites of turkey and I may smoke a salmon. I never really cared for the turkey anyway, much preferred the sides. I am sure I will have a bite or two of stuffing and maybe a bite of mashed potatoes. But I will for sure have some green beans and protein.

    For the physically active sleevers...

80g per day is about right. I like Isopure drinks, some people don't. They are like a gatorade consistency. They have a unique taste to them, but they are 40g Protein in a 20oz bottle. I sip on a bottle throughout the day to get more fluids and protein. You can find them at The Vitamin Shoppe and GNC. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/nature-best-isopure-isopure-rtd-zero-carb-alpine-punch-12-drinks/np-1149#.VkYIAOk6NUM
  10. I started walking a few miles outside first post-op. I was already down about 40lbs (25 pre-op, 15 post-op) before I started on the elliptical. I first went as long as I could. I hit 10 minutes and that seemed hard. I stuck with that for a week, then I hit 15. By the end of the second week I was at 20. I am at 20 now still, 3 weeks later. It will take some time. Everyone is different so just go at your pace. I have been following this one rule when working out. Take yourself as far and as hard as you are comfortable with. If you start feeling light headed, shortness of breath, like really struggling to breath, slow down to a walk and then get off the machine. You seem to be dropping weight very well based on your signature tracker. Keep it up, you'll be cruising 20 minutes in no time. Stay focused and best of luck.

    Too soon?

Sounds like maybe he isn't mentally ready yet. I would normally say that as long as you are ready, its your choice, but I know that our SO's are in this too and they are important also. If I may suggest, ask him more specific questions, rather than a broad general "why is it too soon". Maybe like "Are you nervous that its too soon?" "Are you worried about the surgery itself?" "When do you think it is a good time?" And be sincere about it. It is new to him too and because it isn't directly affecting him, yet, he may feel it is being rushed, while you know what you are in for because of the reading and searching you have done to prepare. I think it ultimately has to be your decision on when, but his input may sway you to hold off a week or so. Hopefully he isn't thinking 6 mos. or something. Best of luck!
  12. It's my favourite time of day! I can watch movies or browse the internet in peace. I would hide food and get it out when everyone had gone to bed. I would be annoyed if my husband decided to stay up (rarely) - I couldn't wait for him to go to bed so I could just get to the eating part! I can relate to feeling annoyed if my Wife decided to stay up a little later. Looking back it was so unhealthy, but during that time, I found my happy place. Glad I am finally over that.
  13. I checked the scale this morning. It was still there, on the floor where I left it.

I hid mine for months at a time and I think that's one of the reasons I got to 282 lbs. I am a scale junkie ;(

    Scale and non-scale victories!

Congratulations! It is amazing to see a different number other than 3. I also hit the 200's for the first time today. 298 this morning. First time in about 9 years! Congrats again!
  15. I have had a struggle with getting enough water since the second or third week post op. I was trying to drink as much water as I could and still not getting 64oz. I have since adjusted my way of taking in fluids. I found bottles or Protein2o, flavored water with protein in it and I also use Isopure. Between those 2 and actual water, 0 cal Vitamin water or 0 cal Powerade, I am able to hit my 64oz and then some. Its just not all water. If I had to guess, about 32oz is from actual water throughout the day. The rest is from other fluids. Maybe that might help?

    For the physically active sleevers...

Thanks! Wow, that is motivational. May have to try the assisted ones. I bet it would help me get to an unassisted faster than just lifting.
  17. My wife and I did something similar a few years ago. First king size bed. She likes them soft so we got a hybrid type that has small coils but then a chunk of memory foam on top. Well, she loves it and I hate it. Too soft for me. I like a firm mattress and she likes soft. We stayed at a radison hotel not long ago and got to use a sleep number bed. We both loved the adjustability. She also has asthma and wants to get the adjustable base so she can raise her head if need be. It would have to be the split adjuster so we can independently raise or lower. Of course, that has to be the most expensive of the options right! Good Luck @@Dub, be sure to let us know how you do.

    I f*****g love protein shakes!

I got got. I was ready to share my enjoyment of a good Protein drink or shake. I see what you did there. Bait and switch. Well, I don't love Protein drinks either. But I like them in a friend sort of way. Like we can hang out after school at the pizza hut, but we aren't hanging out in the woods behind the school making out.

    For the physically active sleevers...

Like you @@HopeandAgony I was never the type that loved exercise. I still have never done a pull up in my life. But, like @@livvsmum, I also found that I look forward to my workouts now post-op. Two reasons mainly. Number 1 motivator being that I know I have a window of time where I can be the most efficient at losing not just pounds, but mostly fat. I have always been a fairly straightforward thinker who hates to waste time or effort. Thus, why I was so out of shape. Why excerpt more than I have to, right? But I know that for this first 8-10 months, I will lose fat so much easier than anytime after that. The Number 2 motivator is that I feel so much better now when I exercise. I never could get that feeling that people describe of feeling better and more energized after working out. I would get on the treadmill and walk for 15 minutes or lift some little weights a few times and just want to stop and shove cheetos in my face. Now, I can relate to that feeling of more energy and feeling great later in the day after a good workout. Not to say that you will have the same experience, nor do you have to, but I can attest to going from #teamcouchpotato to #teamfatburn. And it happened within a month of surgery. I was already walking as much as I had time for. I couldn't wait to be able to lift and exert more energy. At first, my subconscious would shut off my alarm and I would fall back asleep, but after a couple weeks, I got so used to getting up that one night I forgot to set my alarm. That next morning I woke up and freaked out, only to look at the clock and have it be the exact time the alarm was supposed to go off. I hope for you it changes. Even if it doesn't get to the point where you crave it, at least get to a better place where instead of saying you don't hate it, you can say you enjoy it. Best of luck on the procedure!
  20. Pushing through this stubborn stall. Cannot break through 300! Increased my workouts from 3 to 5 per week. 30 minutes instead of 20 on the Elliptical. And adding a little more protein. Next, I need to add more fluids. So close.

Thanks for the tip @KindaFamiliar. I will have to give that a try. I have been focusing on trying to get to 30 minutes endurance then hoping to get my speed ramped up. I had thought about trying to do a 5k but really had it in my head that I wanted to do it in 30 minutes. But then I tried to get on a treadmill. My knees and ankles cannot handle more than 3mph on a treadmill or running on pavement, where on the elliptical, I am hitting 5.5. I just need more time to drop more weight. I won't be able to get in shape fast enough for the 5k in a few weeks so maybe I will refocus on adding resistance in hopes of boosting my loss.

  21. Mine was staying up too late. Pre-Op, I made time for myself by staying up until 1am on weeknights. I would get off work at 6 and then spend time with my wife (before we had a daughter) then when she went to bed at 10:30, I would stay up and have "me" time. Video games, TV, mindlessly surfing the internet. Around 11:30 or so, I would get the urge. A bag of chips or a half carton of ice-cream or 2 bags of popcorn or half a bag of sour patch kids (the big bag) later, I would be happy and fat. Never exercised, actively tried to avoid anything that had to do with physical activity. Hell it took me 2 years to remodel a small bathroom in our master bedroom. I did start going to bed earlier once my daughter was born, but still had the night time snack before bed. Now, I don't eat after 8pm, unless its a sugar free popsicle. Oh, and eating in my car. On the way to work I would stop and get a starbucks and mcdonalds Breakfast. Then on the way home from work, stop for a candy bar or candy and a pop or iced tea. add in the red bulls at work and I was an unhealthy pile of a$$.

    Coffee?

Mine was also 6 mos. But I'm 3 months and I have been cheating. The reason for so long is due to the possibility of ulcers. I am not having more than 1 cup every 3 days or so. But I am still not supposed to. I should also add that, I actually considered not adding caffeine back into my system after detoxing from 4 shot vent iced lattes daily. I didm;t want to get hooked again. I can already tell that I am headed down a bad path. I can tell now when I don't have caffeine. I crash a few hours after one cup. But when I don't drink it, my body feels fine. Use caution. I may have to give it up again.

A Sample Menu for the day

Almost 3 months out and this is what a usual day looks like for me Breakfast 1: Protein Bar (pre-workout) Breakfast 2: Scrambled eggs with cheese (sometimes I add smoked salmon) with fruit Breakfast 2 alt: Yogurt with Bear Naked Granola and ground flax seed Snack 1: BabyBel Light Cheese and Turkey Jerky or Turkey Snack Stick Lunch: Grilled Peppers/Onions with chicken Sausage or Turkey Burger lunch Alt: 1/2 Ham and Cheese Sandwich Snack 2: Power Crunch Protein Bar Snack 2 alt: 1/3 cup Mexicali dip with healthier option chips (Chia tortilla chips or veggie chips or some type of wheat thin like cracker) Dinner: Not Much. I am not usually very hungry for dinner. Maybe a small amount of chicken, turkey burger, salmon with veggies. Sometimes I will make a pizza on a tortilla with turkey pepperoni. I will also make fish tacos once in a while. Cod cooked in a skillet on the stove then flaked into a soft tortilla with lettuce, cheese and cilantro lime tarter sauce. Throughout the day I also consume 1 - 20oz bottle of Isopure Protein Drink to supplement more protein. This also counts towards my Fluid intake for the day.
  24. Yeah, I forgot how much I loved scrambled eggs and cheese in the soft food phase. I would like to change my answer from chicken, to eggs.
