More than this replied to tiffanymarie6997's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Just like your happiness comes from within & you shouldn't look to someone else to make you happy, or entertain you....look at wls the same way...it's something you did for you & no one else. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. You have to take care of you...no one else will. I paid for mine as I didn't want to wait a year & jump thru hoops to qualify. My money, my body, my choice. I tell people that I have had surgery because it may help someone else make that decison if it's needed. Just like telling someone where you got your new dress or whatever, that they admire...they can go shop there too or not...I have nothing to be ashamed of. I am proud I did something for me, instead of putting someone else 1st, which many of us do. So if someone talks to you with that attitude, just shrug them off. You know who you are & what you did was right for you. Be proud you did something smart. There are a lot of idiots out there & you don't need them as friends...1 comment that always comes to mind when I meet idiots like this..."Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one"...heck, use it next time someone says something stupid to u...& hold your head up with pride. You haven't hurt anyone or anything with what u did! U have nothing to be ashamed of, angry about, or have to hide! Show them u have a backbone & they r the backward hicks that need to grow up -

Been there too. Just drink liquids to keep hydrated & take vitamins. Make sure you get LOTS of rest. If you can, try to get protein drinks down. Mine lasted over a week. All kinds of germs going around, especially with the crazy weather, never mind people travelling to & from different countries. I think bed rest is best. Good luck. -
People Suck!

I agree with RKing. What bothers me is if we "take the high road" & don't say anything, we keep replaying that crap over & over in regards to how we SHOULD have handled it. Now I don't know about you but I am not going to add to my problems by getting angry & then having no way to get it out, turning it within, turning it into depression. I have done that a lot over the years & I have only ended up hurting myself. Anger turned inward equals depression. Anger turned outward (if deserved) equals a black eye or your innards full of oil, lol. Seriously, immature , ignorant people like have no friends. Tell her to go talk to someone who cares. As for your husband not saying anything....I don't like the sounds of that....I would like to think that he was just in shock. You are doing great, so keep it up...& the throat jab sounds awesome if it happens again, lol -
Christmas, Before and After

Congratulations!! You look terrific! So glad you are feeling healthy! Christmas holidays are tuff....all that great looking food. Thanks to our surgeries, consumption is easier to control! May the new year bring you the best!!! Twins??? Wow! You are blessed! -
I am going to be blunt. Don't waste your life like I did. Your husband, whether he is screwing around or not, isn't interested in fixing anything. Don't be like me & keep looking for excuses. All you end up doing is losing a piece of your self & your worth every time you get turned down. I got to the point where I did not exist anymore. It was all about him & why didn't he want me? What was I doing wrong....but it took me 17 years of excuses to finally figure out I didn't know who I was or that I existed. Losing who you are is the worst thing in the world. Take control & quit waiting for him to want you. He won't. But I know there are others out there that will want you & show you that they do. Don't wast any more time like I did. And yes, in my case it was affair after affair, but that's not the point. The point is we can find excuses for anything & everything...its when we run out of things to blame or think it may be that we are left naked & only with out selves. Don't get to that point. Please....learn from my mistakes. There is love out there & sex is a part of it.

12lbs in first 3 weeks?!? What am I doing wrong?!?
More than this replied to itstimealready's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have noticed that some people include weight lost prior to the surgery, which skews the results. So someone who lost say 20 pounds previous to the actual surgery & then loses 10 after the surgery, says they have lost 30 pounds but don't differentiate between the 2 losses. People at a heavier weight also lose more at the beginning. Too many variables. Just keep on with what you are doing & you will get there. -

Too funny. This could have been my post. Look at it this way...with the small amount of food you are taking in, your body has no choice but to lose. So don't worry about the scale...it will come down eventually. There is nothing other than that, which can happen & will happen. Your body has no choice but to lose. It will show up soon. It can't help but finally show up on the scale & when it does it will be a big drop. By the way, I was sleeved October 14. Keep going.....bodies have their own sense of humour. -

What is weigh-loss goal reality, sleeve & bypass?
More than this replied to WLSResources/ClothingExch's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for starting this topic. I was told by my bariatric nurse to expect to lose 1 lb a day. She told me in my 1st week. That & hearing about the "honeymoon phase", even on this forum, had me very depressed. Not only was I not losing 1 lb a day but the thought that I was in my honeymoon phase & that it would end anywhere between 6 to 18 months had me thinking holy smokes, I am running out of time. But then my brain kicked in....really, with the little amount of food I was eating, did I really expect not to lose? And it doesn't matter how much I lose in so much time...it matters that I lose, which I will. I was happy to see this posting, though, & hear some honest answers. Thanks everyone! -
Hi! Newbie here from Calgary AB, Canada. I have been following this site since before Christmas. I purchased the big gastric sleeve book & the queen of crops's book. I finally decided on a sleeve due to all the positive results, but....it will take me a year to get it done in Red Deer, on Ab Health. Longer in Calgary. I checked for docs in Canada & found one thru smart shape but it's 18,000 not including taxes, airfare (cheaper to go to the U.S. Instead of Toronto), hotel & nurse (I need a caregiver for over 48 hours). That's a LOT of $. I don't want to go to Mexico because of allergies to certain meds, one being morphine. Since I have been reading that the nurses don't speak very good English, I would hate to flatline, as has happened to me previously on another operation. They operated using synthetic morphine but the nurses put it in my I.v. For pain. Duh.... So...help help help please. Are there any good surgeons someone can recommend, not too far from Canada & NOT from Mexico? I would really appreciate some help asap as I would like to get the sleeve. Thanks so much!!

You are the reason I am here! Thanks for your recommendation! Now going to try & get some sleep...somehow, lol

Hi everyone. You have all been so helpful, thanks so much! I am in Montreal right now & tomorrow is my surgery. Pretty nervous. So afraid of failing as I have failed so many diets. Dr Gagner has been very thorough. I am not afraid for the surgery, because of his thoroughness in regards to all my allergies. I won't be able to take anything stronger than Tylenol, once I have surgery done so I hope it's not too painful. Montreal is beautiful. It's right downtown & close to the hospital. So far so good. It's almost 11:30 pm here & even with being awake 4am my time (2 hours or is it 3? Ahead here) I can't sleep. Anxious. They had me go on a 1 day clear liquid diet, that's it. When I got to the hotel, by the way they cover 2 nite sin hotel, one with nurse, they had bottled water, jello, Gatorade, & broth all waiting for me. Very nice. Felt very well taken care of. Can hardly wait to meet my team tomorrow. I did have problems trying to find a low cal, low sugar high protein shake/drink that I don't have to take out a 2nd mortgage for, lol. Bought the Atkins though, which is affordable but not very high protein-wise. Perhaps I am reaching to high for protein content? I'll figure it out. Wish me luck & pray everything works out! Will let everyone know how I do, which is hopefully very well. Hope I succeed at losing weight & not failing this time. Talk to you all soon & again, thanks for all your comments!! Sure helped me out!

Disappointed - Minimal Weight Loss 9 months post op
More than this replied to Giselle426's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I find that after exercising I get hungry. So the thing I do is have some Protein BEFORE I exercise. As for carbs, they taste great but eating them makes you crave more of them. You need to cut out the junky carbs...the ones that have no nutritional value. And remember, over-exercising won't help you in the long run as it tires you out & your body thinks it needs more fuel in order to run. The best & quickest fuel? Carbs. So that's a reason that would make you reach for them. So exercise & eat in moderation. Don't overdo things. Once you get things under control, then increase your exercising slowly so that you are getting the benefit without increasing your need for a quick refuel on bad carbs. I go for my surgery next week. Looking forward to losing!! -
Oh wow!! That is great! I am so afraid of the loss of energy as I have had this happen on carb restricted diets..please tell me the name of those pills....& I do hope this isn't someone marketing a product....my apologies if u r the real deal, but I have been hurt before with things that have turned out to be just ads

Star Jones weight gain (80 lbs)
More than this replied to hopefullythininme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think failure is always foremost in our minds if we have been a yo yo dieter....lost the weight to only have it come back & more because we could not keep following the diet....with the sleeve, we basically can have what we want but we are satisfied with much smaller portions. At least that's what I have learned from all my reading & research. I am set for Oct 14 surgery & I too am terrified that it may come back...it's just low self esteem/confidence. I believe most of us have lost the belief in ourselves which is a big hurdle we will have to overcome by forgiving ourselves & moving forward. If we do fall, the sleeve is still with us & we need to just do it one day at a time. It's not the same as a fad diet, Lefebre or Bernstein diet, or anything like that. This is more a life change but with a tool that will always be there to help you, & if you don't try to cheat it it will keep giving you what you need. It will be tuff but trust in your sleeve to work WITH you, always. At least that's what I will keep telling myself.......& keep coming to this forum, as well as other good ones out there, to get motivated & to help & be helped. This is so far one of the best things out there which will give us a better fighting chance than anything before. We have to believe that & that should make us fight harder. And this time, we won't give up & put that scale away. Over the last year or so I gave up thinking as long as I don't weigh myself or look in the mirror, etc, I don't have to face that I am gaining weight....well my body sure let me know I was gaining weight in many many ways. So....we will have to be vigilant & drag our butts onto that scale weekly & get rid of any extra weight, if we have put it on, immediately.....that's what normal healthy people do....they nip it in the bud & that's what I plan on doing this time...it's time I took off those blinders & lived my life...finally...& you can do it too....& if either of us have any problems with this, we will get back on this forum & talk it out...we deserve a good quality of life...on your mark.....blinders off....go!!!! -
Just wondering how tired everyone is with the food restrictions. I know that when I was on Bernstien's, eating mostly protein, vegetables, a piece of fruit, a slice of bread....all low in carbs & adding up to approx 500 calories, I was dragging. I got B6 & 12 shots as well as a multivitamin & potassium but I was very tired. Can anyone please tell me how they felt right after they had their sleeve & the weeks that came after, including when you got on the "portions & food types you should try to follow for life"?

Exhausted?

I haven't had the surgery yet & will be speaking with her a week before. I am heading out of town, from Calgary all the way to Montreal to get mine done. We are behind the times here, when it comes to wls. Wait times are over a year & the hoops you have to jump thru are ridiculous.... & in the end, you may still not qualify. So I have done lots of research & taken control instead of waiting. Mind you it has zeroed out all my savings, as it is thru a private health clinic, but I am very fortunate I could do that. Thanks for the heads up in regards to trying to speed things up by cutting out more food...it doesn't work...something I know from regular dieting. I just wanted to hear from veterans who actually went thru the process, on how it was for them...so this is the reason for my post. Thanks so much for your honesty & getting back to me. I really appreciate it. -
Either it goes away or we get used to it & think it's not there anymore, lol. Sorry but I couldn't resist. Use mints, gum, breath freshener, gargle, & brush your teeth of course. Bad breath, for a while is nothing compared with the issues we have, including the loss of quality of life when we are obese.

My surgery is Oct 14. That last time I went in for surgery, nothing to do with weight loss, was 2008. I wasn't as heavy then. I did ok during surgery but it was after they took the anesthetic & oxygen mask, a small time later, that I had problems breathing. I passed out after fighting for breath & them realizing I had problems. They then kept me on oxygen for 2 days. This year when I was looking into wls & during my consult, my surgeon suggested I get a test for sleep apnea, when I mentioned that surgery in 2008. Truthfully I had thought that the reason I had issues was because I am allergic to all kinds of narcotic based prescriptions & they had given me some. In 2002 I flatlined because the gave me reg morphine in the recovery room. Anyway I had my suspicions in regards to sleep apnea over the last year or so, so when forced to get tested by my surgeon, I finally went in. True enuff I tested positive. 51 events per hour. So don't be afraid. You have all that you need to help you & the surgeon & anesthesiologist will make sure you are looked after. BariatricBarb explained the process better than I. You will be fine. Don't worry. You have your team looking after you plus your angels.
