Hello everyone! I am hoping someone can help me out as this book has confused me. Alex, if you read this, please answer. I went back to this book, which I had purchased quite some time ago, just a refresh. I was looking for some information that I may have forgotten & then I remembered I had been confused when I finished it, but didn't reach out to find out the answers. So....here goes..... In regards to a diet to follow for the rest of your life, it says we should eat 60-120 gms protein which is 2.1 to 4.2 oz. It then says that we should eat 6 to10 servings, avge serving 2 oz. In other words 12 to 20 oz? From what my nutritionist prescribed, it is 5 to 7.5 oz for protein. Depending on what you can access on-line, what I read varies anywhere from 2.8 to 3 oz a DAY, to 2 oz 3Xper day. This is from nurses or nutritionists who have put their information on the vsg online. If someone could please clear this up for me, I would really appreciate it.

Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve Book

Duh....lol...just found out that different protein dishes, ie salmon as opposed to chicken, has different grams of protein. You CANNOT convert grams into protein as I was doing. -
Hi. I used UMP & Isopure. I like you don't like chocolate that much. These ones come in all kinds of flavor, including a very nice Hawaiian flavor. It's powdered form but you can add it to your coffee, a little bit of fruit, or yogurt, to name a few things. Helped me through the 1st few months after surgery, when I couldn't get much down. Still use it in shakes now & then.

Hello everyone. I'm from Calgary. Just went to my information session in Red Deer this past week. It made me so very sad that I, as well as the others, are looking at an 8-12 month wait. I want to do this now. I called smart shape & I could get this done in TO pretty quickly but it will cost a fortune. I am so ripped up inside about this whole thing. My knees hurt, my legs, I am hot & sweaty all the time, etc etc...you all know what I am talking about. Not only would it be expensive but then I hear people talking about the honeymoon phase. How after they stop losing, they eat regular amounts & they gain. How can you eat regular amounts once your stomach is small? Do we all of a sudden get our appetites back? I just don't understand how all of a sudden, it doesn't work anymore. I just can't seem to comprehend this phase. I have read so much research including the big gastric sleeve book & somehow it's not sinking into this thick old skull. Can someone help me out? In your experience, going thru all of this, would you pay over 20k to get this done or would you wait a year? During that 1 year wait you would have to do certain things to qualify you for the surgery. I am very broken up about this. I want to feel better sooner than later but wonder if paying all that money will be worth it; if that honeymoon phase, when it's over will mean the weight crawls back on like some fad diet I have already done......

Why do we fall off the wagon? & How to get back on?

Why do we fall off the wagon? & How to get back on?

It’s not just the head issues, which has a lot to do with it but also too tired to make a meal...esp when u r working overtime or more than 1job, or late from work...so many reasons. If u can, pick up the book “Why we get fat & what to do about it” by Gary Taubes. It quotes so much research done out there & things they have found. Very interesting & will help you understand the intricacies of how we put on fat & how insulin works in doing this. It is tough to keep it off if u aren’t following the “rules” & some days are better than others. Instead of beating each other up, let’s just support each other, as we are humans & things happen. i don’t think anyone will ever have the right answer or a fix that will work for me instead of with me......let’s just keep trying. I believe that that is the best we can do. Don’t give up. Pick yourself up & go back to using the pouch RULES. We can all win in the end if we never give up & most importantly remember that u r the one that walks in your shoes & no one else. Be honest & we can all try to help by giving you our tips which helped us. No this is easier for u or me...it’s all difficult as there are so many variables in humanity. No tailored answer except 1 & that’s work with your sleeve & honestly try to follow the pouch rules. Some lose fast, some slow. Some see or hear better than others, given the same treatments. We are individuals & as much as we are the same, we also vary. one of the things they found too is that not all bodies react the same to carbs as others. Some bodies are more resistant while others start storing the minutest carb as fat. -

I wanted to order some stuff & went on the chat line to find out if they shipped to Canada. Either I picked a busy day or it's always busy. Does anyone know if they ship to Canada? -

Can't fix my post....I meant low calories NOT carbs. Gina...floor is yours now. Time to slam me again. Page 28 of your soap is ready for your input. This thread is just like the road accident that everyone slows down to look at. Ciao babe. Gonna try to unsubscribe again. -

I unsubscribed from this thread but because a couple of people repeated what I had said previously, I keep getting emails. So i decided to read thru & wow....it sure has gotten long.....had me hooked just like a soap opera...people telling Gina not to worry, they were sorry for what she is going thru....have hope....but Gina came out battling, lol. Take this & that & I will not be silenced! This is long enuff & crazy enuff that we could turn it into a screen play! People have proven that Gina admitted she had problems BEFORE the sleeve, by her own admission on this very forum....some of those same problems, she says on this thread, were caused ONLY BECAUSE OF the sleeve. Hmmmmmm....things came back to bite u but do u apologize? No....u come out swinging with the another line about those people are checking up on u....lol....omg....u just won't stay down for the count!! Another thing that u wrote but I don't think has sunk in to your conscious is that you could have stayed on 300-500 cal diet without the sleeve....right.....that's bull & u know it....u couldn't stay on a diet that low in carbs for long.....so it IS helping you girl!!! Yay for the sleeve!!! By the way, your "team" that is on your side, including your G?....They r telling you that they agree with u so that it will shut u up. There is nothing else that they CAN say to u without getting attacked like u have attacked so many others on this thread, who tried to console u & give u hope. They give up & say they agree, while praying they don't see u again. Don't get me wrong, I feel very bad for your pain, if it's real... I have to wonder how much of it is a bunch of bull since you had most of these problems BEFORE the sleeve. I see you have internet capability so u should have used it to find out more info on wls instead of relying on other people including yur surgery team. Buyer beware....you said yourself you weren't a candidate yet you went for it. The responsibility lays on yur shoulders & no one else's. However u blame your health care, your surgeons, the nurses, your daughter for not thinking u should have the surgery in the 1st place (so now I guess SHE was right?...bet u haven't admitted to her she was right either)...oh & have I left out anyone? Oh yes, those of us that tried to give u hope & encouragement but got slammed in the process, lol. And now we r laughing coz this thread just seems like some big joke..are you getting a kickback from the diet gurus out there? Don't get wls, diet instead? Buy buy buy our products....is that what this is? And yeah u can point out my short form....its coz I don't want to waste words more than I have to with u, but want to get MY view across. That said....I am going to TRY & unsubscribe again....hopefully I won't get another email, lol....... @ALEX B..... Fix the glitch in he unsub system please. Everyone, hope to see u on a more informative thread, be it one for OR against the sleeve. Like many on here, I believe everyone needs a voice but one that contradicts herself is just plain awful, no matter how entertaining at times, because misinformation could end up causing someone else to make a wrong decision. Being overweight with all the associated risks is bad enuff, but a thread like this that someone may take seriously can do a lot of harm..........& Gina, thanks for the visit to lah lah land again...now, beam me up Scottie. -

Incredible!! I have written my later posts to you trying to placate u. You pick it apart as well as others posts & slam us. You know what "Christian lady", you need to get off this site as you are nothing but mean & don't care about what anyone says, only about attacking a sentence or 2 that does not give the gist of what we are saying. I agree....stop you boohooing & get off this site, if you don't want anyone to say anything to u. You are exhausting & negative no matter what anyone says...& u can't be that busy as I look at all your posts on here & there r quite a few. I am going to do myself a favour & unsubscribe from yur post as I hope everyone else does. You may as well be talking to yourself as u don't READ what others are saying. Good luck with yourself. -

Gina, people just want to give you hope. Perhaps we are all coming off wrong. lets hope things get better for you & you can have a better life than you do right now...to be able to stop losing weight at the rate you are...to be able to go out without having to worry about leakage....to feel healthier than you do. I am sorry you feel attacked. I know I felt the same way when I mentioned a book I had read that I thought may be interesting, lol.....it was like woah.....I was just saying it was interesting, but people got angry....so I got angry & thought I wasn't going to post anymore.....so I can understand....words sometimes don't come off the way we mean them or.....we can't see past our own prejudices. I think many people get to the point where we get rattled when we hear can't, won't, etc.....because Gina, we all believe in hope & without it, what's the point? Hope keeps us all going & that's what we all try to get out of situations like this, & to offer. We are just trying to offer you some hope, one human to another. I guess that's not what you wanted & I apologize for my earlier posting, where I thought I was giving you hope & support......I am sure everyone else was trying to give you this too.......I guess all you wanted was to open our eyes to the dangers, & you have done that. Thank you Gina. -

I am so sorry you are feeling depressed. I have since I can remember & am on mediation. Some days are better than others. I have been grazing more during my bad days also. Getting away from the house or finding something you like doing helps me. Walking really helps. Put on some music that you like or just simply try to get out in nature. Try to look at the beauty out there & know that you are loved by a higher power, call it God, Allah, Budah, or whatever you feel comfortable with. You are not alone. I know it's difficult having been where you are in regards to not having a job. I found that just sitting under a tree & breathing in that beautiful air helps. I would just imagine myself laying in God's hand & no, I am not religious...it helps knowing you are not alone & you are loved. If you can, try & get out and do some volunteer work, esp I where there are children. Perhaps opening up a little business where you are making things that don't cost much, say making jams or crocheting.....something to keep your hands busy & most importantly your mind, & hopefully make a little money to help you until you find other employment. You may have to do something different than what you regularly do, but it seems that's the way of the world now....you know the saying ....we have to be bendable trees & go with the the wind & if we try to fight it, we break.....well something like that....but u get me, I think...take something that may be lesser in terms of what u r used to, to keep busy & to bring in some money, until things pick up...it's the same all over this world...it's just crazy out there...but it will get better...focus on the positive...I know it's difficult, but it's the best you can do for you. Things will change & you will look back on this a stronger person. Nothing stays the same...everything is cyclical...what goes down must come up. You're gonna come out of this fine, just try & think positive. You have done great.....don't go back, it's not worth it. You have done so much & it's been a tuff road so pull yourself together & realize how much you deserve by not giving up on yourself....things will get better -

Ditto what Alex said....Gina omg....that's a ridiculous amount of weight. What I'd your doctor doing to try & help you? The guy with T the tracheotomy? What kind of a hospital is this? Sounds horrible that so many people are worse off than when they went in. You are absolutely correct though....it's not easy to lose weight & even harder to take it off. I wish you well...I pray you find a remedy or some good doctors out there that can help you. -

One last point I should have made....Gina, what would have stopped u of having had the same thing happening as my aunt, whose weight kept going up & up until she was bed ridden & had a colostomy bag? So many people gain so much weight they can't get out of bed or even wipe themselves after a bowel movement, or need to be bathed? Simple things we take for granted...that's what obesity does to you. If you talk to them, they would kill to have your issues....it's all in the way we look at things....sadly there are worse things out there. Just turn on your tv & watch my 600 pound life...that could have been you, without the surgery. Keep fighting....you will find the remedies you need to correct what has gone wrong. Keep fighting for the answers. -

Gina, go back & remember what you were experiencing before the surgery. It had to have been bad enuff for u to consider having it done. Like most of us, u had to have been at the point where u didn't know what else to do, having tried so many ways to lose weight & get healthy & none of them working over the long haul. This wls was the last hope for many of us. Yes we gave up certain things to get healthier. It's all in how u look at things. We forget how bad things used to be...time softens things...like people in abusive relationships that go back to their spouses because "maybe it wasn't that bad". We humans forget what has gotten us to do certain things out of what we deemed necessary at the time. We coat it with the haze of forgetfulness & suddenly it wasn't that bad back then. Be true to yourself & don't knock the past & the decisions you made. You made that decision to help yourself. You made it with all the information available to you at that time. Ok....so maybe it was the wrong decision for you but you would never have known that unless you lived it. Everyone has said they wished they hadn't done something & if only someone had told them not to do it or had told them the real truth....really? Well geez, if we listen to other people, our world would never advance....how many tries did it get to get the wheel right, or that plane off the ground, or man to the moon,, or medications to figure out what worked for your depression but not for your friends? So many things in life work for some & not for others. Fortunately or unfortunately we all have to experience something for ourselves in order to get the lesson. That's how we learn. How many children listen to their parents who say don't do that or this terrible thing will happen. Or how many adults hear things from others but think, hey, that's their experience? We think we know better, so I don't think someone telling you what you had wished u had heard would have stopped you because at THAT point in time, YOU needed to do something this drastic. I am sorry your wls made it worse for u, but it has made it better for others. You did what u did out of hope & as I said earlier the past gets foggy when we look back....so quit beating yourself up about what u did & figure out how to go on NOW. Nothing is 100%,...it's up to the person going thru whatever it is they are going thru, to get the help they can & try to make things better for themselves. I have problems, we all do...but you know what??? Having lost 70 lbs I can move more, have more energy, do more, enjoy life more. I have issues with dumping, some foods not agreeing with me. I have issues with not being able to eat a meal as I once did or enjoy it...but that's all transitory to me....because the truth is, the past me made the best decision it could for the me now & no one or no thing would have changed my mind back then because I was at the end of my rope with knee pain, high blood pressure, tiredness, & so many things including shame at going out & doing things I now can do, that I couldn't before because of my weight. It won't work for everyone...just like certain medications will work for one but not another...just like one (wo)mans bottom for an addiction will not be another (wo)mans bottom....so although I feel for you & what u r going thru, You need to stop beating on what happened....there are no guarantees in life with ANYTHING......just do the best you can....like the rest of us. There HAS to be something the doctor can do to help u so that u don't have to wear a diaper to go out...just keep fighting for the answers. Only when u give up hope, is when u won't find those answers. I pray you forgive yourself & that these feelings will change & u get better soon. You deserve the best in life, like everyone else in this world & I hope you get there quickly so that your suffering ends. -

I had to share this about a book I just purchased & can't put down. It's called the Obesity Code by Dr Jason Fung. He shows how carbs are our enemy. Very very informative. They way he lays everything out makes so much sense, showing how not all calories are the same. How cutting back on calories in, actually causes reduction in how much calories our bodies use (metabolism). It is so well thought out & explained so that it all makes sense. So....if you can't understand why you are eating very little calories & either not losing or not losing enuff, he explains it in ways that help you understand. He goes on to tell us how we can increase the amount of calories we expend, later on in the book, without having to drastically cut back on the amount we take in. I haven't gotten there yet but so far those lights of understanding have been coming on in my head, like never before. I encourage you all to pick up this book. It actually backs up what our doctors & nutritionists are telling us. This is a very informative read.- 26 replies

2goldengirl....how many "scientific" breakthroughs today become tomorrow's "oops...we made a mistake based on new findings"? I just thought the guy made sense.....take & use what u can & the rest ignore....I didn't intend to do anything but offer a suggestion to read a book that may help....it may turn out to work for some people..just like bariatric surgery works for some & not others, depending on how u work it.... Thank you all for posting....one of these days I hope no one suffers from obesity but until then, we can keep looking for, & sharing ideas -

Interesting. All of it., thank you. We are all still trying to find our way. What resonated with me is that I have tried counting calories, as I am sure we all have, & it didn't work. If I ate carbs but still stayed within a certain amount of calories, I found I didn't lose, however using the same number of calories & eating Protein & vegetables, I found I lost. Again no one has found the magic formula yet but this book so far goes with what I have learned thruout my own history of dieting. By the way, there is a list of chapters in the beginning of the book & he does have an index in the back where he lists his sources as well as indicating this in the reading material. Doesn't make sense that Amazon doesn't show this...... -

Thanks for the info Barry. You forgot to mention insulin & how that works on our metabolism or hunger. As I said, I just wanted to mention this book as it's very interesting & he uses things we can all understand. Here's some of the info...hopefully I won't get in trouble for posting this.... Calories are needed to heat the body. Fewer calories were available, so body heat was reduced. Result: constant feeling of cold. Calories are needed for the heart to pump blood. Fewer calories were available, so the pump slowed down. Result: heart rate and stroke volume decreases. Calories are needed to maintain blood pressure. Fewer calories were available, so the body turned the pressure down. Result: blood pressure decreased. Calories are needed for brain function, as the brain is very metabolically active. Fewer calories were available, so cognition was reduced. Result: lethargy and inability to concentrate. Calories are needed to move the body. Fewer calories were available, so movement was reduced. Result: weakness during physical activity. Calories are needed to replace hair and nails. Fewer calories were available, so hair and nails were not replaced. Result: brittle nails and hair loss.--there is so much wealth of info in the book. I did read something about fasting intermittently & other things to try in order to increase the efficiency of how or bodies process calories. That is much later in the book. All the above makes sense. I could never figure out why I was cold on a low calorie diet & this makes sense. Again, this book is pretty good. I hope that when I get to the end, there will be information that will help me in regards to metabolism, besides increasing activity, which in of itself has its own repercussions on tiredness & hunger. I get hungry when I exercise, unlike what most people say about decreasing appetite.... Jintycb.....let me know what u think of this book as you keep reading. Thanks so much for posting, both of you? Thanks for the feedback!!
