    Crazy diets

I did some stupid shit in college, including the 2, 4, 6, 8 diet. You eat 200 calories the first day, 400 the next, then 600 and 800, and start over. I call that my eating disorder time. I also tried some weird diet in high school that included drinking grapefruit juice at every meal and other bizarre requirements I can't recall. So glad those days are over!

    Feeling amazing!

Thank you, everyone! I'm really glad I have people I can share all the good stuff with who understand. And you've all definitely helped me stay on track and look out for pitfalls too, as @@Dub says.

    Question for vets about sleep

I've also always needed a lot of sleep. I'm five months post op and it's gotten a little better. I noticed the biggest difference when I stepped up my exercise game about five weeks ago. It's more that I feel more energized throughout the day with the same amount of sleep than that I am sleeping a lot less. I feel best with 8.5-10 hours. I adjust how much I sleep to how I'm feeling that day. If I'm tired earlier, I go to bed earlier. I generally feel more refreshed when wake up than I did before. On weekends, I find it harder to get back to sleep after I first wake up (which is usually by 8 am). On Saturday, I woke up around 7:30 am and did stuff till 10:30 am. I went back to sleep for an hour and a half after that. I'm also taking less naps and when I do, they're shorter and feel like less deep sleep. I lay in bed for about 45 minutes Sunday and I'm not totally sure I ever got to sleep, but it was enough and I wanted to get up after that.

    5 month post op exercise?

I stepped up my exercise game about six weeks ago. I do BodyPump twice a week and some other activity most other days -- walking (2-4 miles), elliptical (about 50 minutes) or class like BodyStep (60 minutes). I'm 5 months out and I've lost 72 pounds so far. It was definitely faster in the beginning than it is now, but that seems normal.
  6. I agree it sounds like she meant right after surgery or was trying to get people with a very sedentary lifestyle how to get started. A lot of people really have to start that small. It sounds like you're way ahead of the game and that's great! My understanding is that eating less is what's most important for actually getting the weight off. Exercise is a bigger factor in keeping it off in maintenance. I'm still losing weight, though, and I've found exercise helps me in many ways, by boosting my mood, staving off hunger, giving me motivation to eat well to fuel my activities. I'm getting into and enjoying a lot of physical activity, including weight training, walking, cardio machines and classes at the gym. I'd like to get a bicycle soon and am looking into learn-to-row classes for the summer. To me, becoming a more active person is an important step in preparing for maintenance and the rest of my life.

The only thing I can think of to add is greek yogurt with a little granola.

    Face Blindness

I got 54 percent also. I've sometimes thought I've had trouble remembering faces. And it's always baffled me how police could see a photo of someone and then recognize their suspect in a crowd. I'd never be able to do that.
  9. Less than 15 pounds from onederland! Starting to believe I will really get there!

I couldn't believe it when I hit one-derland. It was like opening a christmas present to stand on that damn scale and see a "1" in front of the number! I burst into tears!!! Congratulations for almost getting there - you will be a skinny-minny before you know it!

    High Alcohol Tolerance

The couple of times I've had some wine since surgery, I seem to feel it faster but for a shorter amount of time. Go figure.
  12. I'm just getting into regular sizes, like a size 16 in pants. I'm wondering where you ladies shop for flattering bathing suits? Definitely looking for a one-piece or tankini.
  13. I just completed a biometric screening for work and while almost all of my numbers are trending down, my triglycerides are up to 172, which is borderline high according to the Mayo Clinic website. When they were last tested in June 2014, they were at 115, which is in normal range. I'm really surprised to see this increase because at five months post-op I've lost close to 70 pounds. I've been following the diet and exercising more. I haven't stalled, so things seem to be "working." I'm posting to see if anyone has any insight into this? Is there a reason a person's triglycerides might increase after surgery? I have, of course, contacted my surgeon's office as well as my PCP. I'm waiting for answers and want to see, in the mean time, if you all have any helpful info.

    Weight Lifting

Ditto that proper form is really important. Several gyms I've joined in the past have offered a few free personal training sessions with new memberships to help show you the ropes. My current gym offers a resistance training class called BodyPump. It's high rep, low weight and you can start with very low weight and work your way up. I really like it because the instructors give a lot of feedback on proper form so you can be sure you're doing the exercises correctly. I also challenge myself a lot more in a group exercise setting. Good luck!
  15. Update: I heard back from my surgeon, who said he suspects it's related to the weight loss. He asked me to remind him to recheck it at my next appointment, so I'll see how things look then. Thanks everyone for your replies and insight!
  16. If you only want to remove the notification badge depicting the amount of notifications. You can do that via the Settings (Settings - Notifications - BariatricPal and then disable the toggle next to "Badge App Icon".) I did that as a temporary measure, but I'd still like to actually get notifications. I just want them to actually clear after I go in the app and see whatever it is the notification is for. All other apps clear and this one used to before the update, so the accumulating, never-clearing notifications seem like a flaw.

    Vitamins and supplements

My nut advised me to space my vitamins at least two hours apart. If you've been told to space yours out too, here's something that helped me: setting the timer on my phone. I would take one vitamin, set the timer for two hours and when it went off, it was time for the next one.
  19. @@needtorecover Good to know! Maybe my doctor can order a repeat with a regular blood draw.
  20. @@needtorecover Thanks for the info! When you guys did your screening, did they take your blood from a finger stick and run it in a little machine? That's the first time I've ever had a biometric screening done that way, so I wonder if it could have anything to do with the method.
  21. Triglycerides are up. What absolute bullshit.

  22. I'm having a weird struggle and I'm hoping you guys can provide some perspective. I'm about 5 months out and down 65 pounds. My surgeon said he wanted to see me lose 60 by 6 months, so I'm a little ahead. The loss has slowed down some, but not stopped. I can eat more now than shortly after surgery, so that makes sense. I've stepped up my game at the gym to try to balance things out. I still struggle with Protein, but usually meet my 60 g goal. My typical day is a shake for Breakfast, salad (spinach, chicken, and a little goat cheese, raisins and walnut) for lunch, and for dinner something like salmon, sweet potato and broccoli. Lots of Water all day. If I get too full with what I brought for lunch, I might eat 2/3 and eat the other 1/3 later in the day. Or sometimes I have cashews or some nut exactly balls as a snack or treat. I just barely pushed past my "glass floor" which is the weight I couldn't seem to lose past when I tried many times before surgery. So basically I'm just nervous I'm going to eff up and not lose all the weight. I have perfectionist tendencies and I've gone overboard into unhealthy territory before when it comes to losing weight. How do you balance that? When do you know you're doing enough? Should I be worried it's not coming off as fast as before? Or is perfectionism and anxiety making me worry unnecessarily? Anyone else felt this way?
  23. Good point! I am hoping that doing different activities throughout the week will help with that, in addition to boredom. I figure, also, I can try to up the ante when needed. Like increase weight during strength training, for example.

    Cardio Machines At The Gym.

An hour-long group fitness class goes by so much faster for me than 30 minutes on a machine. I use the machines in a pinch, like when it's in the 20s and I'd rather not walk outside and no classes fit my schedule that day. If I'm only doing a machine once a week or so it's bearable.
