    Hernia repair/Vsg

I have a hiatal hernia which is what started the weight loss surgery path. I went to the surgeon for hernia surgery and he said with me being 95 lbs overweight the Nissan fundiplication wouldn't hold and the bypass would eliminate almost all the reflux issues. After a lot of research I have decided to do the bypass surgery and hernia repair. The insurance will cover the hernia as it a very valid medical problem attributing to the severe reflux which is causes esophagus scaring and such. From what I have read here and other sources it's fairly common for overweight people to have this type of hernia. I knew mine was there for about 5 years due to multiple scopes for the reflux problem but it has increased in size. A side note.... The part of the procedure covered by insurance is a small fraction compared to what you will still out of pocket from what I have been told. Hernia repair is outpatient so the hospital stay isn't covered which is the largest part of the bill. I still can't get a straight answer on the exact cost. I know that my doctor has an all inclusive program for $25,000 for bypass so I am hoping for at least a couple thousand off that.
  2. Are you doing sleeve or bypass?
  3. This is almost like having your first child.... Just wondering what to expect.
  4. I'm curious about a dual procedure recovery time. I have a fairly large hernia to be repaired at the same time as the bypass. This is expected to be laparoscopic. Does anyone know if the recovery time would be the same as that for bypass only? Obviously everyone's pain tolerance and circumstances are different. I am trying to plan time off work from my desk job with no lifting what so ever. Thank you!
  5. Great question. I am self pay as well. I got to the nutritionist and psych evaluation next Tuesday and I am dying to know when I will be scheduled. Hopefully in September.

  8. Wow your before and after picture is amazing! You should be so proud of yourself. I should get my surgery date when I go next week to meet with the nutritionist and psych evaluation. Good luck with your conversion!

Denied now wanting to self pay

My insurance excludes the bypass even though it is needed for extreme reflux and hernia issues. My surgeon has a bypass package for $25,000 which includes everything except dietician and psych evaluation. I hope to self pay and have surgery this fall.
