Abdominal Pain 3 Months Out from LGS
flumd0612 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I had gastric sleeve on October 6th and thus far have lost 67 pounds. I feel fantastic with more energy and clothes are just falling off of me. But I have a new problem...from time to time I get abdominal pain around the belly button and radiating all over the abdomen. It feels like gas pains, but I am able to pass gas and move my bowels. Last night it was unbearable and this morning it has eased up. When I listen to my belly, I hear gurgling and I do feel like there are waves of movement across the belly. I also feel a hard lump near the belly button which makes me think I have a hernia. I am keeping a food diary but the pain isn't associated with anything specific. Does anyone have any advice about this? I am going to see my doctor but wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue so far out. Thanks. -

Hi there...I'm three weeks out and am on pureed / semi-solid foods. I've become extremely constipated and in fact felt I was blocked up yesterday. I vomited several times until I was able to have a BM and then I was fine. Has anyone experienced this so far and if so what have you done about it?

How is everyone doing with getting all their Protein in? I am finally taking in some soft/semi-soft foods but am having a hard time getting in all the protein that I need to take in. I start the day with a Protein shake, one of the ones with a higher amount of protein (Pure Protein, OhYeah, others), which gives me about 1/2 my daily need, but I am struggling to get the rest. I have become temporarily (I hope) lactose-intolerant, so I am somewhat limited to tuna, chicken or eggs....and I am getting sick of them!! Does anyone have any ideas of how I might get some more protein without having to drink another one of these revolting shakes!!! BTW...3 weeks out and I have lost 31.4 pounds!

Post Op Lactose Intolerance...why?
flumd0612 replied to OilSooner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is an old post, but I had the same issue yesterday. Had 5 ounces of Kefir (yogurt-based drink) and for the rest of the day had severe, debilitating cramps which would only go away with pain pills and sleep. Today, no dairy at all, and I am fine. While I am bummed...I hope this is it because I have been worried about all the pain I have been having! -
Lactose Intolerance After Bariatric Surgery
flumd0612 replied to BaileyBariatrics's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Hi...wondering if I could have had this issue today. I am post-op day # 12 and today tried to eat Kefir (a yogurt style drink) which has a good amount of Protein per serving. I developed severe abdominal pain within the next few hours and was in bed the entire day! I thought I might have to go to the emergency room!! Does this sound like lactose intolerance? All the while I had pain I heard gurgling in my stomach and (not to be gross) I was passing wind. I just had terrible cramping which only responded to pain medication and sleep. What do you think? -
Hi everyone...I'm at post op day 10 and have gotten better but am still not taking much in. I have learned so far that I can only tolerate a max of 4 ounces of liquid at any one time and then I am done for a few hours. I've inadvertently drank liquids during that time and got so bloated that I could barely stand it. We are told not to drink and eat together and I understand why that would be a problem later on, but I think it is a problem now. Today I had this very sweet Protein drink called "New Whey" - awful but has 42 grams of protein in only 4 ounces. Problem is that it is so sweet I found myself 'rinsing' my mouth with other liquid while I was taking this and within 4 hours I had consumed 22 ounces total liquid. I was in bed for the next 3 hours! Has anyone had this type of trouble i am experiencing now?

I tried some vanilla Boost today (one of my medical team's recommended Protein shakes) and it turned my stomach. So I am thinking that this is my body telling me that I just am not ready for this yet. If this were over the weekend, I would have been in tears thinking that it would never get better, but now I know it will just take more time. In the mean time, I am following all your lead....hydration first and other stuff next. Haven't started Vitamins yet, but will get there. I have experimented with different flavorings for bland chicken broth which has helped. And just now I slowly sipped 4 ounces and while I am full and a little bit uncomfortable, I am much better than I even was last night after I tried the same thing. Thanks for everyone's support!

I hope all that have sent encouraging words to me are reading this, but yesterday I turned the corner. My pain is decreased, my nausea is almost gone, and I feel a lot better. What's interesting is that I knew that at some point my recovery would be all about learning how much one can take in to fill the pouch at a given time. I had two 'meals' with broth yesterday and learned that at this point, 4 ounces of Fluid at any one given time is too much. But I am happy it is now happening, because whenever i took anything in over the past few days, I got such discomfort that I wasn't able to clearly determine what the issue was, either filled pouch or post-op pain. Yesterday helped me to turn the corner and realize it. I have heard from others that women seem to do better post-op, and that being a man I should not be surprised it took so long for me to get through the first hurdle. Is that other's experience? Thank you all for the support...if not for this forum it would have been even more difficult the first week!

You will do great! The flight will be a cake-walk (or a protein-shake walk)!

I am post-op day #6 and am still feeling pretty lousy but I have learned, through the wisdom of this forum, that the way I feel is to be expected. I am still on Clear Liquids but expect to go to full liquids soon. In the beginning I was putting a lot of pressure upon myself because I believed I would be up and about in no time. That wasn't true and now I know that it is going to take time for me to feel human again. Hang in there and we will make it through this. Pretty soon we will be looking back on others and encouraging them like they are doing for us right now.

It's been a real yo-yo. Today i tried Protein drinks and it didn't go so well. It accentuated my nausea a lot and I haven't been able to take anything in for the past 2 hours. I appreciate everyone's support and will keep on trying. I will contact my doctor in the next few days if I don't get better.

Hello all- It is post-op day #5 at 0600 EST and I am still feeling pretty lousy. Yesterday was rough with a lot of abdominal pressure and pain and absolutely no desire to take anything in at all, either Fluid or food of any kind. I managed to get in about 16 ounces of fluid but each time I took a small sip, I had to stop and let the gurgling pass for about 30 - 60 minutes before having anything else. I spent most of the day in bed. Today the pressure has subsided (at least for now), but I have this mild queasiness and empty feeling in the part of my abdomen where my sleeve should be. I am hesitating to take anything in but I know I have to so I will take it slow. At this point I am just trying to get fluids in and not worry about nutrition, since the thought of any Protein shakes or related food just turns my stomach. I have read many blogs and it seems I am not terribly far off what others have experienced, but I have to tell you that I am very discouraged and am second-guessing my decision to go through with this. Even though I needed to lost the weight, I am not sure right now that the degree of discomfort that I am experiencing is worth it. I need some encouraging words from others to let me know that what I am experiencing is not terribly unusual and that i will start to feel better soon. I hear about others who feel great in a few days and I am envious. My doctor and team led me to believe I would be up and running within a day or two of getting home and that isn't likely to happen at this point. I am feeling hopeless and just want to hear from others to make sure I will be OK. Also, today is my birthday and while originally I thought it was a good idea to get the surgery as a 'birthday gift', now I am not so sure of that. Thanks- Frustrated in NJ

Hang in there...I am sure we will all be fine. Today is post-op day #5 and I still have a lot of dissension but I have found that it has to do with not having a good BM prior to surgery. My surgeon didn't demand a liquid a diet before surgery, but in retrospect I should have done it...I think that the distention and pain would have been lessened. On a good note, the nausea is 99% gone. Now I just have no appetite and a funny taste in my mouth! I am keeping the faith that all of this will go away and I will be feeling great soon. Keep in touch everyone and lots of luck!

I am post-op day # 4 and it is rough. The nausea is finally subsiding and my belly is still quite bloated. I am sure it will get better but right now I am pretty down. I'd love to hear if others had a more prolonged recovery or if most got their spring back in their step quickly!! Please post encouraging words! I need it!
