  1. He told me it was basically my choice. That the RNY has more complications. That the sleeve you have to work a little harder with. That regain on the average is 50% of EW to lose within 5 years. He really is leaving it up to me.

New NSV - after all this time

@@Kindle, did you have your surgery in Mexico? Do you know your bougie size? I am going next week for surgery and it looks like the mexico people fare better. I know mexico people tend to get a bougie of 32 and my surgeon said he'd do a 36 for me- but he doesn't do them as small as mexico does.
  3. I I have 65lbs to lose, which are stubbornly sitting on my body. I eat small meals and I still don't lose weight. I am 50 years old, a menopausal woman, and I am just tired alot. I've been on a near constant diet for my entire life. 65lbs overweight is a relative success for me- that I'm not bigger. So I scheduled this surgery. I got approved- with a sleep apnea co-morbid...And now I am thinking about chickening out- I am sick with worry. Does everyone live with complications? Would you do it again this surgery- if you had less than 100lbs to lose? Really would you? I know that if I go to WW regularly, I may lose some weight- but I am not particularly confident that my habits will change on my own. I tend to starve myself- eat less than I should- and that terrific habit has helped my metabolism to be way out of whack. I want this surgery because it will be a healthy check to do the right thing- that I can't seem to accomplish on my own. But such worry. GERD. What if I get it. What if it can't be controlled and they have to convert me to gastric bypass when I'm not that overweight? I am sooooooo soooo over thinking and worried. Please help.
  4. I've talked to my therapist about my fears. And my surgeon. And people who have had the surgery. My therapist thinks they're good questions and that she would be having similar concerns - that it's a no going back procedure so ask as many questions as I have. My surgeon just says if i take the Vitamins as he dictates there shouldn't be any issue.
  5. @@Inner Surfer Girl, yes I presume that to be the case too. But they both amount to not getting the right vitamins in which will have an adverse effect on you and cause issues if you don't.
  6. @@NikkiDoc Thank you. That makes me feel alot better. I can only presume that my Vitamin levels are good since no doctor has ever advised me on my blood panel reviews, to take Vitamins or Celebrex. Thank you for adding your detailed thoughts and taking my question seriously, as it was mean to be! You and posts of others like you have really been so very helpful through this nervous pre-op wait!
  7. Hi, I am a week away from surgery for the sleeve and i am very concerned at this moment- about the effects on the body long term from the procedure. What are your experiences? This procedure is not supposed to be a malapsorption procedure but i seem to see a GREAT DEAL of people talking about severe Vitamin issues. At the start - and for the first few years. Then nothing. That really concerns me- partly because what happens then? Does your body start to break down from long term f-cking it up? I've read about bones shattering and teeth shattering. Iron infusions. General feelings of unwell-ness. Since this is NOT just about losing weight- and this is a LIFETIME procedure, this is of great concern to me. I spoke to my surgeon about it iand there seems to me to be a true focus on the major issues of leaks and strictures and hydration immediate deficiencies but then people seem to be grasping in the dark about the rest of it- for the rest of your life. What has been your experience? Before I go under the knife to resect my stomach this is something I want to know about. I have 65-70lbs to lose. I qualify for the surgery and am approved.

Data showing long - term post op vitamin deficiencies?

Well, people far out from surgery can give their take which is what I'm asking. Your surgery was just in May, is that correct? I'm looking for feedback from people who had surgery and are far out from it. I was reading on here about it. http://www.gastricsleeve.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28236

Data showing long - term post op vitamin deficiencies?

Like, I see plenty of Iron deficiencies. My doctor said it would not be an issue because I am in menopause. But I do see people posting here and other places about anemia being common.

And by long term- I'd say as long as anyone who is far out can tell us?

@@Inner Surfer Girl that's cool that just wasn't my question. I am interested in knowing if there are long term issues with not getting the vitamin benefit from eating I guess.

Data showing long - term post op vitamin deficiencies?

@ I have. They just say, take your viitamins and supplements and it won't be an issue. But again, this is marketed as not a malaborbtive procedure- but if it's not, you should in theory- eventually- be able to get what you need from food right? I don't take any Vitamins currently- and I have no deficiencies. I just had my blood work done. I am pre-surg.
  13. @@Elode that would suck to have to go ON blood pressure medication when you didn't have to before the surgery. I hope it resolves for you.

Data showing long - term post op vitamin deficiencies?

@@Inner Surfer Girl I'd have to re-search every google search I did on it but there are definitely alot of mentions of it on the SLeeve fb pages. It makes me worry there's no data looking at it.

@AvaFern I am really happy to hear everything you wrote!
  16. @@dforre50 I know.....I am very concerned about the LONG TERM lack of studies on Vitamin absorbtion. OVER and over i read posters saying I think - like sheep- what they heard their surgerons say to them- that this is not a malapsorption procedure--- but clearly it is. If my 2 years of lurking on the pages is data gathering, there clearly is. So I didn't want to do the RNY (bypass) because of the long term requirement to take Vitamins for the rest of my life. I am not a great pill taker- I have never had to take medicine for a long period of time- more than a few weeks- and I don't know that I'll stay on top of it- FOR THE REST of my life. I'm prettty confident that I won't be compliant with it. So what will happen to me if I get loose on that? Will my teeth break? Will my bones break? Will I require infusions for Iron and b12 and god knows what else? If anyone knows people longer than 2 years out- please speak to this because it's a big worry. My sister called me in tears about it. That losing 65-70 lbs isn't worth a lifetime of illness and body failing because I did something elective to myself.
  17. @@NikkiDoc, well, 70lbs to take off, say I take of 50 of them, and then the doctor has to convert me to a bypass? With minimal weight to take off? That's my concern about the bypass. I want to be thinner. I don't want to be too thin.
  18. @@NikkiDoc thank you. How old are you? I'm 50.
  19. @@amymina, I read that too. But i play this internal questioning gme with myself. I have Lymphedema, I am sure as an RN you know what it is, and what it does to weight and the body- and I started this process to see what I can really do about making it better. Not curing it, but the things that make life ALOT more difficult- like, my leg has grown so big that I have to buy 2 pairs of shoes for every one pair I wear. Most dress shoes are out. Sneakers. Orthopoeic looking shoes. Those are what I wear. Pants, I am a size 14-16 on one leg and a 18+ on the other side. What I do know about my edema is that as I lose weight it does go down- in proportion to its own size- just gets smaller. If I can get my leg smaller that way maybe I can buy regular shoes. Maybe I can participate more in the work world- because I don't have a seamstress to make all my clothes fit to my body, I cant wear a suit, unless it[s stretchy. My entire wardrobe on my lower body is yoga pants. I am totally serious. If I can help move the scale from 212 to 140 I'd do it/ I just don't want to have crumbling teeth. lose too much weight (My surgeon snickers at this one- like- don't worry about that one my dear) Be bald. Have gerd that god forbid I would have to have a surgery to fix- I hear they fix it by converting people to a Roux en Y. Be nauseous. That nausea thing is the single most worry that aches my stomach. So debilitating. How long will it last. 2 I have already a light gag reflex, if I get into a coughing fit, I dry wretch. Doing this to finally get to a normal weight is something I can do and prepare myself for but these things that worry me, they do worry me. I've chickened out 2x!! Last year I researched this surgery and was going to go to Tiujana to get it. I chickend out. Then I had a schedule for July 5th here in Connecticut. I got so sick with nerves that I stopped eating altogether. For like 3 days. I got terrible IBS. SO I called my surgeon and said I need to reconsider. Am I 100% convinvced that if I don't do this I will die? No. I don't think I'll die. I'm not morbidly obese now. I'm right on the BMI approval line for insurance. But if I don't get this leg under control- and my weight is a factor in size of it, then I will probably end up on disability. I can track a downward spiral of work and relationships and stress in the last 10 yeasr and I've only gained 12 lbs in the last 10 years. But it's affected it. I either need an anti-anxiety med, or to hear alot of people who have not had these kinds of complcations I wrote above because I've read them all.
  20. @@maryannotginger, why wouldn't you have it at 50? Is there a bad result of this surgical procedure on aging?
  21. @@jenn1, yes of course! I am having this surgery in the united states and it's covered by insurance, I fall within the guidelines.
  22. @@jane13 I have plenty!
  23. @, I hear you. I don't have that crippling hunger, I'm not hungry all the time- or, if I am, I ignore it. I eat small meals but my wieght doesn't move. Like this morning, I had one hard boiled egg. And 1/2 cup of fruit. I wasn't craving more, that's basically when I eat, decisions I make. Proteins over carbs most of the time, an Atkins like -ISH choices. Not all the time, but much of the time. But my body is very comfortable at this size and doesn't want to move out of this weight. I dont even KNOW what it is like to be a normal wieght.
  24. @@maryannotginger I have tried to lose this weight since I was a kid - but the on;y result is that i get heavier and heavier. Not at the same rate as many people who are getting surgery, but for me, it;s alot. I have done Atkins. I have done HCG, Nutrasystem, Optifast, you name it, I have done it, Diet Center (remember that?). Why do I have to worry about my bones and my teeth? Is it going to speed me into osteoparosis? I read on a page of a guy who used to be 5'11 when he got the surgery 2 years ago and now he is 5'8! That FREAKED me out. I love my teeth, I have spent alot on them! But in terms of - just do it on your own, well that hasnt been successful for anyone pondering the surgery or having it. I mean, the barrier and reminder of a smaller stomach must be helpful. Or maybe it;s being sick that makes you lose weight! Can I ask another question to you who have had it-----Does your body look the same with weight loss from surgery as it used to before when you lost weight?
  25. @@bbsbk221, what kind of complications are you talking about you have/had? I am a 35 bmi and I have a comorbidity of sleep apnea. I am pre-diabetic- not diabetic yet. I worry that I am in that nether region of between not fat enough to get surgery (but I do qualify so I am fat enough but you know what I'm getting at) but too fat to take it off without help.
