How long in hospital and off work?
quiltermom65 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm now planning on having the RNY. How long are you usually in the hospital and then home and off work? I was told that some people can go back to work within 2 weeks. I need to plan my vacation/sick leave. I'm just starting the process and haven't a doctor yet. Also I've had a C section and open hysterectomy so I'm used to pain. My sister in law wants to come and stay with me a few days to help out. Would that be necessary? -
Who do you want to be after?
quiltermom65 replied to Nurse_Lenora's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 50 years old and wear pretty, feminine age appropriate clothes. I tend to like to be more conservative and wear longer sleeves and longer skirts. I want to get some cute cowgirl boots to wear with jean skirts. I like other boots too and want to wear really feminine dresses/skirts but that aren't too tight. I've been looking on Pinterest to find cute styles and outfits. -
"My Diet is Better than Your Diet" -- random rambling...
quiltermom65 replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
I didn't watch the show but used to do WW. I did lose 65 lbs on WW once but when I stopped following the program I gained it back. I'm almost 3 months post of RNY and have lost 70 lbs. I know this has to be a lifetime change. I used to be a fan of Oprah, but not anymore. Over the past several years I've gotten so tired of her. I wouldn't do WW now just because of Oprah. Yes, I do wish Oprah would get surgery, it may be her best bet. -

I just wish they would show more follow up and the journey over the year or two after surgery. -
Slower than I expected
quiltermom65 replied to TheNewKris's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 13 lbs in a month. That's slow to me but others say people lose at their own time frame. I guess I just need to exercise more and take it one day at a time. -
Unfortunately I have stress incontinence. When I sneeze or cough I leak. I'm wearing poise pads to catch my accidents. I'm also 49 and have had 3 children. If I wait too long after I feel the urge to go to the bathroom I can have a little accident. Has anyone else had this and then after surgery it has gotten better? I need to lose over 100 lbs. I'm just hoping this is one of the things that gets better.

Help, 1 day post op and have pain and can't keep anything down.
quiltermom65 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day post op and I'm trying to take really little sips of water and eating SF popcicles. Afer I drink I get a pain in where I think my pouch starts. Been vomiting today several times. Is this something typical so soon after surgery or should I call my surgeon office? Can't keep anything down. -
Help, 1 day post op and have pain and can't keep anything down.
quiltermom65 replied to quiltermom65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ended up going in to the emergency department about 9 pm. Got hooked up to IV Fluid and lots of sips of apple juice watered down. I was able to keep it down at hospital. Also had an xray and was told it looked ok. The other bariatric surgeon in the practice was on call and the ED staff conferred with him. I was able to hold down the liquid and I hope today is a better day. Still having some pain in the same area, hoping it's just trapped gas that I need to walk off. -
I'm so excited and starting to be a little scared that my gastric bypass is going to happen. I'm scheduled for surgery on October 19th. I go to my pre op class tomorrow and meet with my surgeon on Friday. Then wait a little over a week and then have surgery. At first it seemed so far away and now it's going to happen. I'm looking forward to starting a new life.

Why do men lose weight faster...no fair!

Men always lose faster than women, it's not fair. It is what it is. Good luck with your surgery. -
Does anyone feel pressured by surgeon to have the bypass (instead of sleeve)
quiltermom65 replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still pre op and when I went to the informational talk by the health educator and doctor I feel they really pushed the RNY. I had originally wanted sleeve for most of the reasons you do. I don't yet have co morbidities, didn't like the idea of dumping etc. However I do have gastritis and acid reflux and decided for me I think I'll do the RNY because of that. I'm not a gambling woman and didn't want to end up with worse reflux after the sleeve. I think doctors push the RNY because that's what they are used to. Because of your past cancer I would agree that the sleeve may be better for you, but that's a discussion you need with the bariatric surgeon and an oncologist. Good luck to you and whatever tool you decide on will be the better choice for you. -
Have Gastric Sleeve book, do I need to buy the Bypass book too?
quiltermom65 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm new and pre op, haven't had surgery yet. I've been pretty determined to have the sleeve. I bought Alex's book the Big Book of Gastric Sleeve. It's a terrific book, all 400+ pages of it. I'm still leaning toward the sleeve but am wondering if I should do the RNY bypass. My question is this, since I already bought the Gastric Sleeve book would I need to also buy the Bypass book? I would imagine the pre op and post op diets are the same. I just had my PCP refer me to the bariatric doctors so I haven't even discussed it with them yet, which surgery I should get. I like the sleeve because I don't like the idea of malaborbtion, nor do I want my insides re-routed. I don't have co morbidities but I do have some slight gastritis and take RX Pepcid. I like the idea of the Ghrelin being gone and I don't like the idea of dumping. I am afraid of the sleeve leaking. On the other hand, I do have a family history of diabetes and want to avoid that at all costs. I have a sweet tooth and dumping may be a good deterrent. I'm concerned if I get the sleeve the acid reflux would be an issue. My BMI is 46 and I'm 49 yrs old. Are the pre op and post ops diets the same? Didn't know if I need to buy another book. -
Starch questions on pre op diet
quiltermom65 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got put on the pre op diet to lose weight prior to getting approved for surgery. The NUT has me on 1200 calories a day, 3 servings of starches. Tonight I had 2/3 cup of brown rice as I hasn't eaten any starches all day so I had 2 servings of starches. I thought after bypass we weren't supposed to have starches like rice or potatoes. Why would it be ok to have them now and not later? Also, I had previously given up caffeine and soda. Now I'm having headaches again. Could this be sugar withdrawal? -

The BIg Book of Gastric Sleeve or By Pass
quiltermom65 replied to Mountaingal's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I originally wanted the sleeve so I bought the Big Book on Sleeve and now I decided to go for a Bypass and also bought the other book too. There is a lot of the same information shared in both books, however there are some differences. Glad I bought the books. Very thorough and 400+ pages. If anyone acts like I don't know what I'm doing I'm going to show them that I've read through both books!! That's a lot of information. I would highly recommend these books. -
Kaiser approval!
quiltermom65 replied to fordgirlalways's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! I have Kaiser too and just starting the process. I had heard that it only takes about 3 months now. Were you told form the beginning that it usually takes 6 months? -
Where in the grocery store did you find this? Was it by the soda, the Powerade and Gatorade?

Zumba is fun but very hard for us big girls. I just go and do my best. If there is a move I cannot do, I just march in place or keep moving. I don't do any of the jumping motions as I'm afraid to break my ankles. I just do the best I can. Can't stand treadmill so Zumba is my go to for cardio! I also get motion sick very easily so lots of turning around quickly is out for me. I just keep moving. I'm sure Zumba gets easier the more times you go and get used to the routines and/or lose some weight.

Went to my WLS introductory class on 7/17/2015 and that afternoon emailed my PCP to refer me to the bariatric program. Yesterday I called Kaiser to see if they got my referral. At first the receptionist said no, but then she found it. Said it usually takes 3 weeks to get the referral and updated into the program. She said I was in the program and my surgery orientation is on August 11th. Still don't know what all they will require of me but I guess I'll find out at this next mandatory class. I'm so excited. Glad I didn't wait for the doctor office to call me. I need to be pro active and make sure things get done.

Bingo Wings/Bat Wings
quiltermom65 replied to leanne1126's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pre op but afraid of bat wings. I know my husband has me doing a lot of tricep exercises. -
My dad who doesn't know anything about gastric bypass puts in his two cents from time to time. I'm pre op but telling my husband that I need to try some Isopure or GenePro powder. Dad was saying that protein powder can affect the kidneys. Is there a problem with using them? Like I said I'm pre op but practicing getting in my 64 ounces of water in and my kidneys seem to work, I pee all the time. Don't want to mess them up with protein. I drink protein shakes now and don't have a problem with them. I'd like to get some flavorless protein to put in my water. After surgery I want to hit the gym and build muscle, that means more protein than just 60-80 g per day.

How long in hospital and off work?
quiltermom65 replied to quiltermom65's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Thanks for the info. I think 2 weeks off work will probably be ok. I have a desk job. My sister in law was just worried because our other sister in law had the RNY surgery and while on pain meds she fell and broke her arm. So she had to recover from RNY and a broken arm. My sister in law doesn't want that to happen to me. -
I have been asked whether I am pregnant at least 20 times!
quiltermom65 replied to my_new_lifetime's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm pre op, haven't had surgery yet. I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I've been asked before too by children. Some people just don't have any common sense not to ask people that question unless they know for sure. I cannot believe people rub a person's belly, pregnant or not. What an invasion of personal space. If anyone does that to me, I'm going to rub their belly back. How awkward.
