Why Am I Dropping Weight So Slowly?

Ok. So I'm 12 days post op and have only dropped 10 pounds. Shouldn't I be losing more? I'm intaking about 550 calories or less per day. All my full liquids have been fat free or sugar free. And I've been very diligent about staying hydrated. I just thought I should be losing more weight. Any suggestions/comments?

Why Am I Dropping Weight So Slowly?

To Santiago Draco and xrayyoung22, thanks for your motivation. But if 1 pound a day is the norm, I embrace that fact with enthusiasm.

    Calorie counting and food measuring?!

I received a Bariatric binder from my nutritionist 2 months before my surgery. It listed the diet phases with sample menus (among many other pieces of helpful information) for each phase. I would be lost without my binder. It's like my Bariatric bible. So consulting a nutritionist wouldn't hurt. But also check out this sight I found called www.bariatriccookery.com. That might help.

How soon did you start driving?

I agree with Treed. As long as you feel comfortable and not on meds, I think it's ok. I was driving 3 days after surgery.

Yeah. I drink 30 minutes before and 1 hour after meals as well as walk 15-30 minutes per day. Thanks Rora.

    6 Day Post-Op Update

Ok. I finally made it. My surgery was July 20th and I'm feeling pretty good. Glad that's over with. But I wasn't worried because I had a great surgeon (Dr. Hormuz Irani) and was cared for by a fabulous hospital staff (San Joaquin Hospital). Here's my perspective: Surgery Experience: The worst of it was eliminating the air. Because they fill your new stomach pouch with air to check for leaks, the air still lingers in your system until you release it. So, when I got to my hospital room I started burping as much as I could. The pain wasn't too bad. I didn't use my pain pump that much. But at least it was easily accessible if I needed it, so that was nice. As far as activity, I started moving as soon as I felt well enough (about 1-2 hours after arriving in my hospital room). My biggest exercise mainly occurred when I went to the bathroom 20 billion times. Also, around my 5th-6th hour in the room, I said I wanted to get up and walk, so the Nurse's Assistant took me for a walk down the hallway. No kidding about moving around. You feel so much better if you start moving around as soon as possible. That's probably why I'm feeling so well now. My 2nd day in the hospital, I had my swallow test around 9am. No problems there. So, I was able to progress to ice chips, 30 cc's of water/liquid. Everything went down with no problems. I was discharged at 4pm the same day. Home: I must admit, my first day home was weird. That air residue was a stinker. I know this sounds gross, but releasing gas and burping was a huge help. I also had a little bit of pain on my left side. I wasn't worried because I knew my body was healing. On day 2 and 3, I went for a 10 minute walk. That felt really good. Please remember to only do what you can tolerate. It's day 6 at home and I'm feeling really good. I've lost 6 pounds since the day of my surgery. I'm so glad I made this decision to get the gastric sleeve surgery. That's just a summary of my first week of gastric sleeve surgery. Good luck to the rest of you who are embarking upon that gastric sleeve journey.

    Starting 2 Week Liquid Diet

Hello Psychsnob, My 2 weeks are clear liquids too, but we're allowed the snack of an egg or mozzarella stick. I'm drinking all the cans of chicken broth to get my 900 calories in. And even after doing this I might still be under 900 unfortunately. I drink the chocolate Premier Protein shakes. They're very tasty to me so I don't mind drinking them.

    Starting 2 Week Liquid Diet

I was told that if I start to feel hungry I could squeeze in a 3rd Protein shake if I needed to. Not sure why I included Jello and a 4th Shake in my schedule. I must have typed over some previous notes. My apologies. But yes, I'm able to eat the following for snacks: 2 mozzarella sticks, or 2 hard boiled eggs, or 1 mozzarella stick and 1 egg. This is daily. I created this schedule and based it on the notes I took at my bariatric educational class. Also, I'm on a 900 calorie diet. I'm kind of excited.

    My Story

I guess I should share my story of why I've chosen to have the gastric sleeve surgery. Well, after being told that I developed high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis (all a result of my weight gain) I thought it was time to deal with this weight problem. To be honest, if I had not acquired these conditions I would have never given bariatric surgery a thought. I felt I looked good and healthy, so end of story. Oh, but I was deceiving myself. Apparently my body is screaming for help and help is exactly what I need. I know that bariatric surgery isn't the cure all. Exercise and a healthy diet are just as important. I've embraced this wholeheartedly. I just need that jump start to get me going on this journey to weight loss. I'm an elementary teacher and need as much energy as I can get to keep up with my little darlings. So the weight must come off as soon as possible. I want to take a Christian cruise and be healthy enough to move about when we arrive at the ports of the beautiful cities. That's my brief story for now. ????
