I am from Nova Scotia Canada. My journey with wls began 6.5 years ago as the wait list time here is pretty long. Finally received my call and began the process in august of 2014. The wls team here was fantastic and are very involved in the process. They make sure you are ready mentally and physically before setting the date for surgery. There are sample menus to follow and a requirement you practice the liquid diet for 2 weeks before even being considered for the surgery. This is to make sure you are committed and tolerant of such a change. I lost 47lbs prior to to my surgery date which was June 16th 2015. Since then I have lost another 11 lbs in 8 days. I found this site while browsing the Web for any answers from others on whether they had a change in sensativity to smells after surgery. I am struggling with that. I have never had issues with smells before. After reading some posts from different members I realize how different the process is for wls here in Nova Scotia than other parts of the world. It surprised me to read that people are eating solid foods just 2 days later. He we are required to do a full fluids diet for 4 weeks followed by a diet of ground and mashed foods for 4 weeks before advancing to solid food again. I am struggling with getting the required protein intake of 60-80 grams of per day. I am super excited to have begun this journey and I hope to compare notes with others going through the a me thing. Oh and my reason for getting this surgery is my dad. I have never known him to NOT be on a diet, to NOT being actively trying to lose weight. He is 68 and has had so many health issues related to his weight. He has struggled his whole life. I saw my life heading in the same direction. By the time the we had become aware of this type of surgery, it was not recommended for my father. Too high risk. I told him my plans, he was so happy and supportive of me. I hope this life change prevents me from having the life he has right now which includes heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, not able to sleep in a bed only on a couch propped up or in a lazy boy chair and only leaving the house for doctor appointments. And yet after all that, yes, he is still on a diet ( isagenix) and is till desperately trying to lose weight. I would be so happy to hear from anyone but especially anyone who has had wls in Halifax NS with Dr. Ellsmere.
