  1. I am 3 weeks out from sleeve surgery and struggling to get all of my Protein for the day so I'm hoping some of you on here can help. There is so much information about Proteins on this site and the number of choices is overwhelming, so I thought I would just ask a very specific question. What are the protein powders or ready to drink products with the highest protein levels and higher protein to carb ratios? I am specifically looking for drinks that are less sweet or unflavored.

real life struggles years post op

Thank you! Thank you for taking the time to write that for the benefit of others. I truly appreciate it. I am only 3 weeks out and this is such an adventure and so much to learn. That was some great perspective.
  3. I was a very healthy eater before having WLS. Even though I ate well, still couldn't lose, so opted for the surgery which I had two weeks ago, and am struggling a LOT to get all my Protein in. It really worries me that most of the protein products have SO many artificial sweeteners, coloring, chemicals etc. I just don't see how any of them can be healthy, even if they are high protein? I have tried going for the healthier versions of whey Protein powder, but the selection is so limited and I just can't get all the protein I need for the day. Am I the only one worried about all the artificial stuff they put into these high protein products?
  4. I like that plan from your doc.... I cannot bear the sweetness in all these drinks... have bought some unsweetened and trying to use those. But I think it will be better once the real food is more possible. Just started puree today and was able to make egg drop Soup with real egg... and some thicker turkey bacon and squash soup all blended, etc. Much better than the drinks...
  5. Those are good thoughts, maybe I should be doing that. I have been off all the garbage for so long I just can't bring myself to buy the stuff with all those artificial and chemical things ... sigh. Might have to bite the bullet and buy some and think of the lesser evil and think more short term. Thanks for helping me think more broadly on this... :-)
  6. There is so much information about Protein powders on this site. I have spent a long time reading but haven't come up with the specific information I need so I thought I would ask: Do any of you know which Protein drinks are available (preferably ready to drink but not necessarily) which are High-protein (higher the better, I'm having a very hard time getting all my protein in one week following surgery) Not too sweet or not sweet at all (I really hate all of the sickly sweet protein drinks out there) Preferably without colorings and all kinds of additives I am only one week out and already am so tired of all the protein powders mixed into milk. I am trying liquid Soups but adding Protein powder into that just doesn't taste very good. Thanks !!!
  7. Anyone have diarrhea for a week after surgery? I will speak to my surgeon but wondering if that's normal and when regular BM's start?
  8. Hi I am about 9 days postop. I have not had any trouble drinking as long as I drink slowly. However, this morning I took my liquid supplements (liquid Multivitamins, cod liver oil, Vitamin D etc.). I then had a couple of sips of milk. And it seems that the milk got "stuck" and I know I only had very little, not a lot, drank slow, and ever since then I have thrown up some slimy stuff couple of times and I just cannot get any liquid down. And I really feel like something is stuck in my stomach... ??? Have any of you experienced this?
  9. I stopped dry heaving after 2 days. Hope you are not heaving any more...
  10. I am weighing in on this because I have had weight-loss surgery and from previous weight loss I have a lot of loose skin and fat, but also I am a therapist and have used these kinds of shirts and vests for training posture in kids. However, I do not believe that a shirt like this would work for someone with a lot of skin and fat. The reason is that the angles of pull and the forces on the shirt will cause pressure on the skin and fat but not necessarily have an effect on posture. If you want it for posture, I don't think it will help posture but it might help keep skin in place like a pressure garment.
  11. Hi all, I am one week post surgery. I truly cannot believe it myself. After all the years of trying and all the planning and all the emotion. And, I am down a hole 11 pounds which to me is just amazing because I could never lose anything without absolute starvation. Anyway this is my question. In the early days after surgery, how did you feel if you eat too quickly or too much? I am questioning because this morning I was drinking kefir and I started getting shaky and feeling hot and cold and almost feverish although I do not have a fever. I wonder if I was drinking too quickly? I did not feel pain but I do feel really strange. So wondering if it has to do with me possibly drinking too quickly. I only drank about 3 ounces so I don't think it was too much but maybe too quickly.
  12. Thanks for all the responses. I am now day 4 following surgery and I am still draining a lot of fluid as well as draining at the skin where the tube goes in. I did speak to my doctor's office yesterday and they said to watch it and gave me some additional instructions but it doesn't seem normal to me.
  13. Hi all, I am feeling a little overwhelmed (and excited).... so many emotions before the surgery... I need to figure out what to buy and make before having the surgery. Do any of you have or know of full / comprehensive lists of foods to make and things to buy for each of the stages? I know it's individual tastes and each stage is different according to surgeons instructions but just wanted a starting point... :-) Would love to know what you all ate when you got home from the hospital and then going forward. THANKS !!!

AGREED.... I can't wait now that I'm doing this... hard to focus on anything else...
  16. I know this sounds completely crazy but I just recently got my surgery date (Nov 10) which I am excited about, although a little nervous but more excited. However, since getting the surgery date I feel like I cannot think about anything else. I feel like my life is at a standstill until I have the surgery. The only reason I can think is that I have had a lifetime of being fat and tried so many different things and I am so, so, so tired of being fat. This has become such an emotional struggle for me, and I think this is the only place I can write about this and have people who understand because many of you have also been through the same things. Normally I am organized and I get everything done I need to do and am successful as a parent and in my job. But now I feel really like the rest of my life is on hold and all I can think of is getting the surgery done!!! I've never experienced anything like this before. I think I am just so emotionally done and so sick and tired of being overweight! I really, really hate my body. I hate having to find clothes to wear. I hate that the matter what clothes I put on always look frumpy and horrible! I hate that I get tired with some usual daily activities and I shouldn't be tired with those usual things. I am just so desperate to lose weight and this is a last ditch effort. Anyway, I think I am just venting because this is the only group of people that can actually understand what I'm saying and feeling. I wonder if any of you got to such an emotional state of desperation about losing weight, although I assume you did with going for surgery. I am hoping and praying that after the surgery, (I know I will still have to work at it it's not a magic wand, but I will work at it hard) I hope and pray the weight starts coming off quickly and I can start moving around easier and being more motivated to work out and move my body and get things done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone experienced some of these feelings? Once you had the surgery and the way started coming off for you more motivated to move around, exercise, move your body and get things done?

  18. Hi.... getting down to the wire for sleeve surgery on Nov 10th. I think I should get started on the liquid diet early and have longer than two weeks since I have put on weight in the last month with not eating as carefully once I decided to have the surgery. Just wondering if any of you have used Protein drinks that do not have soy in them? My doctor's office wanted me to use Bariatric Advantage but it has soy in it so any ideas of what would be equivalent but without soy? Thanks !!!
  19. I don't know whether to do Sleeve or bypass. So I wanted your opinion. I have a very low metabolic rate, confirmed on testing ... probably from years of yo-yo weight and dieting. I also have Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism. I have been on a very healthy diet for the last 5 years and eat only approximately 1200-1500 cal per day but I am still unable to lose weight with eating healthy food, supplements and that calorie level. I really do want to do the sleeve surgery because I don't want to deal with problems with malabsorption. Have any of you had a low metabolic rate or hypothyroidism and experienced success with sleeve surgery? I am worried about getting sleeve surgery and not losing enough. I had the band for 8 years but had it out because of all the problems. Now hoping the sleeve will work but not sure if I should be thinking about bypass. Any opinions or experiences?
  20. I am scheduled for surgery on November 10 and I am learning all about what to expect and what I should be eating in the different stages. I have always been a fruit and vegetable eater and have often juiced fruits and vegetables and blended them. In the first stage, Clear liquids right after surgery, do you think juicing fruits and vegetables will be OK? I have a juicer that extracts just the juice with absolutely no pulp and so I would consider those to be clear liquids. I really don't want to be drinking a lot of commercially available stuff with a lot of artificial sweetners and chemicals in them. Would love to know what you think.
  21. As you lost weight did your energy improve? When did you start seeing any improvement in energy levels? I am 50 years old and about 100 pounds overweight and have been overweight my entire life since the age of eight! It seems like the last few years the excess weight has really started taking it's toll on my energy levels. I am really hoping that once the weight starts coming off I will feel more energetic physically, I will feel like doing more, and things will be easier to do physically. I would love to hear your stories about energy and getting around and getting things done once the weight started coming off.
  22. When you lost weight did you find that you were more motivated and productive? Do you get more done now? I seem to have gradually lost motivation and getting less done and I am sure it's because of getting older and bring overweight for so long
  23. Hi, Does anyone know if surgeons will do weight loss surgery on people with a BMI of around 33 and with long-term struggles with weight loss? I know insurance won't cover that without any comorbities but will surgeons do weight loss surgery on that kind of BMI for people who are self pay?
  24. So I am about 5 weeks pre-op. How many of you gained weight before going on the liquid diet? I don't feel that I am going nuts but it is SOOOO easy for me to gain that just by relaxing and eating the things I normally wouldn't, I have started gaining :-( I am perpetually on a limited eating plan / diet to try and lose weight (which obviously doesn't work) and now am eating things I typically wouldn't like bread, milk, Cereal etc. Anyway, I don't want to jeopardize the surgery but I will do the two week liquid diet, just wondering how many of you gained once you had made the decision to do the surgery?
