how long is the Gastric Sleeve surgery ?
PChayy05 replied to boosh10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Doctor stated surgery would take about an hour and 15 probably less, but he corrected an unexpected (but totally normal) hernia once he was in, so it took just a little under 2hrs. -
5 days post op, feeling blah. Normal?
PChayy05 replied to chopsitter's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is very very normal! Your body is recovering, and I don't know about others, but the residual pain meds from surgery had me sluggish for a solid week. I would wake up, and feel like I could nap for 3 more hours (and I did that a few times) but don't forget, although it's a chore, get yourself up and walking every hour for about 10 minutes. This will definitely help with energy. Other than that, you'll start gaining your energy when you have protein shakes and soups. Totally normal to feel depressed and out of it, just don't let yourself cacoon in bed for weeks. Your body is recovering from the shock of surgery, so you have to put in the work to stay hyrdrated, get the protein shakes down, and get enough rest. Hope you feel better soon!! -
Day 6 post op itchy red incisions
PChayy05 replied to need change's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great advice, going through the same thing here. itchiness and redness on and around my incisions. My doctor said the surgical glue should peel off soon on it's own, he said I lightly scrub it off left to right, not up and down, but i'm afraid to do any scrubbing lol I'm definitely going to try benedryl and hydrocortisone. -
Incisions are driving me crazy!
PChayy05 replied to smrogg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, same here. I am 11 days post op, and last night and today.... my incisions are DRIVING ME NUTS. I just want to scratch them so bad. I'm patting them, and just trying to ignore it but it's bad. @@BostonHopeful that is great advice, I noticed last night that most of my incisisions have a slight redness and irritation that I didn't have last week. During my one week appt, my doctor stated the adhesive can start coming off so I think i'll start slowly peeling them away. Hope we find relief soon! -
I would call surgeon first, then doctor. Could be a vitamin or nutrition deficiency. Hope u figure ut out!

Fascinating post! I feel the same way. I've been on soups since 3 days post op. As soon as it became a little more easier to swallow, I was taking in soups and it's such a life saver. I literally cannot imagine what I would do if I had to be on liquids for another few weeks. That sounds horrible, and I say if you can take puddings and soups then do it! Slowly and in moderation. Although today I had some brocolli and cheddar soup and immediately dumped! Not even sure if it was considered dumping because it was just immediate diarrhea, no shakes or chills or heart racing, or stomach pains.

This can't be dumping... but what is it?
PChayy05 replied to wicked's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow! That sounds incredible! How are you doing on weightloss? Do you have continued loss, have you experienced any wl plateaus? My doctor's philosphy is similar, and he had me on soups 4 days post op, over a week post op and i'm trying mushy stuff. He said food after a month or so, but like some people, I am afraid of everything I put in my mouth. But so far so good. Hoping and looking forward to a successful diet similar to yours. -
Question about dumping
PChayy05 replied to Daisee68's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awesome post, lots of great advice and tips, ao thank you! I've started on soups, tomato and squash were fantastic. Felt like I was having a 5 star restaurant meal lol Yesterday I ventured into brocolli and cheddar soup.....I was in the restroom within 5min of being done!!!!!! And this morning I had a few more teaspoons and back to the toilet immediately! So broccoli and cheddar soup is out! Luckily, my experience in dumping wasn't as hardcore as I've read. I just had immediate diarrhea, but no sweating, stomach pains, trembling, heart racing, etc. just some grumbling in the tummy and I knew what was happening. Lol I'm gonna puree some beans this weekend and see how it goes! -
How are all our friends who had surgery this week? I had my sleeve done on June 25th and i was doing great at the hospital, using the restroom regularly, able to walk well. Now that i'm home i am struggling a bit without hospital pain meds. It's not unbearable by any means, but it feels like i did 800 sit ups and i cant bend over, bend to the side, getting in and out of bed hurts too, and i have a very slight burning sensation toward the bottom of my belly. Hope thats normal. Im doing my best to get liquids down, but its almost half the day and i'm down only half a bottle. The pressure and discomfort in my chest reminds me of the endoscopy discomfort but thats doing much better after day one. Good news, i've been releasing a lot of the gas which has helped but i still feel like a blimp full of helium walking around. How's everybody else doing in their first week post op??

@@mataz78 thanks for the advice. I appreciate it -
I'm less than a week post op, but maybe I can help out with some advice. My friend, own it! Don't feel blue about not finishing your meals, don't feel bad about not being able to take it all down. The only thing that matters is that you are fueling your body with enough protein and calories and energy to keep you healthy and happy. Dont feel bad one second about finding yourself in a place where you might have to explain yourself, and don't feel bad because it isnt so easy yet to get everything down. Own the fact that you were brave enough to change your life and that you're going to use this tool to better your future. You know your truth and either they understand and support or they don't. But i assure you from what i've read and seen in others with this surgery it WILL get better and easier to get the food down. You will feel normal soon with just a bit of food from your plate, and you won't have to feel weird for it. Take it a day at a time, as long as you're trying toward the right track then you got this. Congrats on 20lbs lost!!!

@@TexasGirl86 that's good to know. I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow so I'll get a clear answer but my entire right right leg is really really numb and there's a burning sensation. I just went walking for 30min and it seems like it got worse! Here's hoping everything is fine. -

One week post-op HOW ARE WE DOING?
PChayy05 replied to PChayy05's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree! It sounds like everyone is doing tremendous. I have to say that I was antisipatinf a lot more paina and nausea, but i havent had nausea except once right out of the hospital and pain is down to a two now. Im feeling dehydrated, im really trying to get liquids in, especially since it's not painful anymore, but i just feel stuffed. I have one concern, hoping someone can help me out here: Since I got home from surgery, the outrr sides of both thighs have been numb, especially when I lay down. I constantly have to shake my legs and get up to walk, but even so, i have a lot of numbness and tingling feelings on both outer thighs. No burning, pain, or itchiness like I've read about online, just numb. Pinched nerve? Could this be effects of anesthesia still 4 days later? Any advice or thoughts is helpful. I'm also seeing my doc for my first week appointment so i'll bring it up. Take care guys! -

One week post-op HOW ARE WE DOING?
PChayy05 replied to PChayy05's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
5 week liquid diet after surgery? Thst seems rough. I've read here from a lot of people that they r on pureed foods by week 3. I totally understand keeping u in the hospital until you were hydrated, they kept me all day until i could down two bottles of clear liquids. I would ask for some more clarity on that 5 week post op liquid diet because how are you supposed to have any energy? Like someone said earlier, post op i was on all liquids and had 0 energy. But now that im incorporating protein shakes and chewable vitamins im feeling good. Advice is to keep a shot glass with u. Every ten minutes, get thru one shot glass of clear liquid. As protein shake, remember to keep clear liquids going along with sips from shake because my doc said the shakes can dehydrate u too. The shot glass thing really gets me goinf because its not a full bottle of liquid, just a small glass i can be sipping on. Good luck!! -

Woke up this morning with minimal pain. Very happy about that. It's become a lot easier to get through water and protein shakes too. I coughed hard earlier and felt like every organ fell out of my body lol be careful. But overall my intake is going great and the pain is down, so im going to work on some soups tonight. I took chewable vitamins, and i felt like i had a 7 course meal, but no nausea. Sounds like everyones getting in enough liquids and protein! Thats the most important this first week. Im also walking 15min every hour or so and that has really helped the gas pains. Week 2 and 3 are right around the corner! -
Would u suggest taking miralax with my liquid intake just 3-4 days post op? Or should i wait longer to see if I can go? Im having bad stomach cramps and wondering if this adds to the pain im feeling. But i dont wanna take miralax if it's not safe so early on. Any advice is appreciated

PChayy05 replied to Sleevefornellie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys! I had my surgery yesterday about 6:00p and was up and walking by 1am. I peed a huge amount by 3 am which nurses were very pleased about. I was with two other patients over night and i was the only one up and walking and peeing. They had to put a catheter in them, luckily i was up and going. Pain was tolerable, most difficult part was getting in and out if bed. Starting today about noon i've had bad cramping and gas pains. They said it's normal. And Today at 5:00 i was released! I found out post op that i had a very small hernia that the doctor corrected during surgery so i'm wondering if thats why i'm having such bad cramps and gas pains. I was the only one up and walking hoping to relieve the gas pains but i have it bad on my right shoulder and bottom of my belly. I almost have a burning sensation under my belly when im getting in and out of bed, anyone hear or read about this? Is this normal? Im on clear liquids for the rest of the week and after one week follow up i'll be approved for full liquids. And another week after i'll move onto mushy foods. My doctor was only concerned about dehydration. We had to finish a whole G2 and bottle of water verrry slowly to be discharged with vitals being checked all day long. I got 3/4 down the g2 and most of the water. Its not that i feel full but the gas pains make it hard to swallow and my throat is sore from the tubes and endoscopy. Anyway, im reallly hoping im able to burp all this out within the next couple days. Again, its not unbearable its just uncomfortable. How's everyone else feeling? -
