  1. I am so sorry it's strange how fast things change and so suddenly. I am only two weeks post op and I had to call the office today because I am having horrible chest pain when I ate my breakfast just a small bit of scrambled egg teeny tiny the second bite was awful waited till the pain stopped then took another bite swallowed and instant pain in my chest a horrible stuck feeling that would not go away.. I stopped and put the eggs away repulsed. Waited 30 mins and took a drink instant pain when I swallowed the water even felt stuck.. I have been having a textbook recovery but I know something isn't right. Called the surgeon and he suspects a stricture. No shakes or anything today. How many weeks post op are you? Hang on there I know it sucks but it won't last forever that's what I keep saying..
  2. Be careful with the recliner. We were all advised NOT to use them. It's even written in our informational binder. The reason we were given is that it is attributed to blood clots in your legs because of the way your legs rest on the lower portion of the recliner. Just something to keep in mind...
  3. So I am 10 days post op and plan on calling my Dr in the morning. Today I noticed a hard lump under the largest incision on my left side. I did a little bit of reading and it could be a few things it isn't red and warm which is why I am waiting until tomorrow to run it by the surgeon. Has this happened to anyone else and if so what was it? It's about the size of a fifty cent piece.

Pre Op diet weight loss amount?

I wasn't required to lose weight before surgery. I was required to do a two week pre-op liquid diet. My diet allowed 3 protein shakes a day ( I hated these and usually got just two in a day) and I could have 64 ounces of clear liquids. I ate a lot of sf jello and popsicles and water had some broth (I strained chicken noodle soup) gave the noodles to the kids and ate the broth that helped so much.. I lost 20lbs during that time.
  5. OK so I know how important it is to follow your surgeons instructions. I have thus far. The very restrictive two week pre-op diet where I got no solid food whatsoever was horrible. However now I have an extremely detailed binder I got from the surgeons office. They have listed in detail my different phases in which I introduce foods. The first three days of course clear liquids. Then the third day it has me adding smooth greek yogurt light kind unsweetened applesauce and cream of wheat or cream if rice very thin. It says make three meals of this a day not to exceed more than 2 to 3 tablespoons. One week post op it has me adding these new things to the mix cottage cheese refried beans fat free and soft cooked eggs very very tiny portions of course then I add more things at 3 weeks. I am worried thus is to much to soon. I trust my Drs they perform more of these wls in the Midwest than any other center have been a center of excellence for years so why do I feel this way?

    Medicare

I just had my surgery on the 13th with Medicare as my primary and they did NOT require a 6 month supervised diet. What they did require was a former unsuccessful diet attempted and that had to be Dr supervised.
  7. I don't know what to do. I am 24 hours out from gastric bypass. I am now at home and in agony I have had 6 children and a kidney stone and this pain is worse than childbirth and a kidney stone. I am taking a heavy duty narcotic and have some zofran but I am just miserable. Questioning my decision and so on. My surgeon is 3 hours away so I can't just drive back there. I have been walking but it is so exhausting and draining and I am truly suffering from all this pain. I just can't see an end in sight I am miserable..

    Post-op Panic Attacks

Your probably right about why they occurred. Are you feeling any better? Hang in there ((hugs))
  11. So I have RNY on the 13th and am on day two of my pre-op diet. I have had one protein shake. I was told to have 3 protein shakes a day and 64 ounces of clear fluid which includes sf jello and popsicles. I had my protein shake and had a very hard time getting it down. It was just awful I made a different flavor for the second one and it was worse than the first one. Couldn't I couldn't drink it. My issue with it is that it tastes like to sweet like flavored milk. I like milk but can't stand flavored milk I just don't think milk should taste sweet. I think that's my problem with the shake. So yesterday I had one popsicle and one serving of jello and the rest of the day I had just water. I was so hungry by evening that I gave in and had a packet of salmon (the single serving kind that comes in the little foil package). It has no carbs and a good source of protein so I thought it was the lesser evil. The surgeons office is closed till Monday of course I plan on calling and finding out what if any other options there are. I am worried that this will prevent me from proceeding and feel awful that I cheated its day two and I haven't had a protein shake today at all and no solid food I am tempted to break out the high protein salmon again but I am just feeling so guilty about it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get through this weekend until I call the office on Monday?

Official August thread! Where are you guys?

I am feeling you lol. I just started my pre-op diet and I cook for a large family of 9. Tomorrow will be my first full day of the pre-op diet and I have surgery in exactly two weeks. I don't know how I am going to make it to be honest but I am determined to do this. My surgeon doesn't allow any solid food. I get 3 protein shakes a day and am allowed 64 ounces of clear fluids which can include sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello and low sodium broth one cup a day. That's it... When is your surgery?

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet

@@Kitty I also start my pre-op diet tomorrow. I am allowed 3 to 4 protein shakes a day and 64 ounces of clear liquids (which include sf popsicles and sf jello and low sodium broth) we aren't allowed the sf fudge popsicles or yogurt which is a bummer. I hope I can make it through the next two weeks..

Official August thread! Where are you guys?

My two week pre-op appt is tomorrow. I see the surgeon one last time before surgery and get all my lab work done tomorrow as well. I also get my presurgical bottle of bodywash I was surprised when I got a letter in the mail instructing me to take 3 pre-op showers and how to take them lol to funny. I also start my pre-op diet which doesn't allow any solids for the entire two weeks (sigh) I think it would be more bearable if I didn't have a large family to cook for

    2 week pre-op diet

I start mine tomorrow. I am allowed 3 protein shakes a day and a fourth in the evening if I really need it. I am also allowed 64 ounces of clear liquids in addition to the protein shakes. Included with the clear liquids are sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello as well as low sodium broth. I hear this is one of the toughest part of the process but I am determined to get through this. I see that quite a few people are allowed a small low calorie dinner such as a lean cuisine once a day but my doctor doesn't allow that. Some people are also allowed to add fruit and peanut butter to their shakes but we are not. We are allowed to mix our shakes with skim milk.

    Vanity, thy name is PinkieD

Your only human don't be so hard on yourself. Surgery is a life changing tool for living a healthier lifestyle. I just got my surgery date and I admit I have also thought I just want to be thin so I can look good. I think that is okay also and healthy. We are going to physically feel so much better and that will come out in our self esteem as well. I was didn't struggle with obesity as a child or very young adult it wasn't until around 25 that I started piling on the pounds and I didn't really have a bad image of myself either. It wasn't until five or six months ago that I saw a video a family member had taken and all of a sudden it hit me I am fat and I can't possibly live another 40 years like this I will never make it and thought how ashamed my thin fit adult and young children are of me. Of course that's not the case lol. Keep your chin up. Don't be so hard on yourself your making a good decision now and you deserve this.
  18. I had my consult on June 4th and completed the psych evaluation, dietitian appt, attended my patient education class, all in one day. I got an order for an EGD and had it done just the week after. My insurance was submitted and now I am just waiting for the scheduler to contact me for my two week preop appt. So things have moved so fast my head is spinning. Looks like I will have a late July date possibly early August. My concern is the pre-op diet. It is strictly a protein shake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and one in the evening if you really need it. This is for 14 whole days. I am very worried. I know it's a short term sacrifice for a long term goal. How many of you have had to do a strictly liquid pre-op diet? I will take any suggestions and advice. I honestly see this as being the hardest part of the process and it's giving me some anxiety.

    No pre-op diet?

I would definitely call your coordinator and check. I think most surgeons do a pre-op diet of some sort though I have seen a small number that don't. I know the biggest reason my surgeon requires it in all patients is because they want to shrink your liver thus making your surgery easier for the surgeon makes your recovery time faster and reduces your risk of complications.
  20. I am so excited to have my surgery date!! I had my first appt June 4th and everything has gone so smoothly it hardly seems real. Does anyone else have an August date?
  21. Awesome sugarbabe!! We are two days apart. What kind of pre-op diet if any are you required to do? Yes, the waiting is going to be loooong I fear. I have a wonderful portfolio I got from the clinic filled with all kinds of patient information and guidelines. Its got detailed food lists menus and portions for each phase post-op and pre-op and information on all the vitamins protein powders etc and I have been devouring that portfolio and added my own to do list. I am beyond ecstatic about this next chapter in life.
  22. I have Medicare and I just had to show a past failed diet attempt. I did the phentermine diet and had to stop it after a short time because I started having horrible chest pain and tachycardia. That was more than a year ago. My clinic has been amazing!! They are all super nice they are detail oriented. Everyone knows exactly what their job is and they do it well. They are encouraging, prompt on answering phone calls, and always available. They just really know what they are doing and I was actually offered a late July date but decided I would rather wait after the 1st of August and after pay day lol.
  23. I am having the RNY.. Everything happened so fast and now I just get to wait. I start my pre-op diet August 1st so I suppose that gives me plenty of time to sample different protein shakes. My pre-op diet is 3 protein shakes a day and 64 ounces of clear fluids. No solid food for two weeks. I was thinking about asking doctor for something like 1 or 2 ounces of broiled fish a day for the first couple of days.

Two week pre-op diet protein shakes only help!

Thank you for the words of encouragement!! I now need to dive into the search for the right protein poweder.. I wonder does it taste similar to flavored milk? I can't stand flavored milk at all blech.

Two week pre-op diet protein shakes only help!

Yes, I am allowed 64 ounces of clear liquids a day. I will try the Mexican tortilla broth but I know I will struggle with regular beef and chicken broth. I just don't care for it. I am the family cook and cook for a large crowd every night (about 8 to 10 people) so I know I need to prepare mentally for the challenge.
