    Anthem BlueCross

Don't be surprised if they still do a pregnancy test. I'm post menopausal also and I had to have one during all the pre-op testing and another one the morning of surgery. I thought it was so silly. I also had an ablation and my husband had a vasectomy but they insisted on it.

    Why Not Bypass?

I chose the sleeve for the same reason other people have mentioned - I didn't want my intestines messed with. I also have Celiac disease so I didn't want to have the malabsorption issue - I already have that problem. Plus and this is really silly but I didn't want to have to do the whole colon clean out like you have to when you get a colonoscopy. My surgeon requires that for the bypass but not the sleeve.

    Getting Real

I work from home. The first week there was no way - I was so exhausted and just couldn't do anything but rest. The second week I was still super tired and worked about 4-5 hours a day. By week 3 I was fine and back to work full time.

    Surgery and Work

I work from home on a computer all day. The first week I couldn't have worked if I wanted to. I was so totally wiped out exhausted I didn't stay awake a lot. The second week I was still exhausted and only worked about 4-5 hours a day. By week 3 it was better and I was back to work full time. I'm in week 7 and I still can't sit in my chair at my desk for too long. I'm working from the couch and the coffee table instead. The chair makes my back and side hurt really bad still.

    Flying Blind

I do the same thing you are - I eat between 1000 and 1200 per day. Are you losing? If you are losing and you are comfortable it shouldn't be a big deal. I stick to Protein, veggies and some fruits. I don't do the carbs and the only sweets I eat are sugar free Fudgesicles. I am in week 7 and my surgeon says it's fine. As long as I'm getting 80-100 grams of protein a day and not eating carbs and sweets he's fine with it. We're seeing the scale go down. Are you a straight sleeve surgery or did you have a band to sleeve revision? I had a revision and he only took out about 75% instead of the normal 80-85% of the stomach to line up with the scarring in the esophagus so I wouldn't spring a leak. I eat about 5 oz of protein a meal along with either a small salad or some grilled zucchini or green Beans.

    Help! Just had surgery...

I had to spend 2 nights in the hospital - my surgeon makes all his sleeve and gastric bypass patients spend 2 nights. I had 2 shots of morphine the first day. The 2nd day I had a major headache and they gave me liquid Vicodan. I walked, walked, walked and I didn't take any other pain meds. I was walking 10-15 minutes out of every hour and got rid of the gas pretty quickly that way. I work from home and I still took off a full week and worked about 5 hours a day the 2nd week. I was totally exhausted. Hope you are feeling better soon!

    No protein powders?!?

I started on solid food on day 10 after surgery and haven't had a Protein shake since. I get 80 to 90 grams a day. I pick Proteins that have high values and don't eat things that only have 8 or 10 or 12 grams in a serving. My NUT told me you should strive to get the higher levels but you may not be able to do so immediately.

    Swimming incision question!?

At my 4 week follow up with my surgeon he cleared me for using the pool.
  9. I know that same full feeling - I got that on Saturday when I took one bite too many of the hamburger patty I was eating. I have had no trouble whatsoever with any foods. I went to solids on day 10 with my surgeon and NUT approval. My surgeon did tell me that he only took out about 75% of the stomach because I had scarring at the esophagus from the band and he didn't want to run the risk of leaking at that spot. I haven't thrown up once in 7 weeks. With my band everything was coming back up. Sounds like your experience is similar to mine.

    Anthem BlueCross

I have Anthem BCBS. When I had my surgery I had to use a Center of Excellence. I was supposed to do the 6 month program but my PCP wrote a letter stating that I had been paying for Weight Watchers for a year and had been following Atkins with her before that. They accepted her letter. I had to have a bone density test, sleep study, mammogram, pregnancy test, H-pylori test, 2 meetings with a psychiatrist, 2 meetings with the nutritionist, EKG, chest x-ray, bloodwork and pay my maximum out of pocket up front before I was approved.
  11. As we've all seen everyone's surgeon and NUT have different ideas. I was told never, ever to drink juice in any shape, sort or form. I could drink ice cold Water at that level at one week post op. Or my Protein shake if it was really cold. I can only drink liquids when they are super cold.

7 Months Post Op- not losing weight

I wasn't losing at 800 to 900 calories. I went to 1100 to 1200 and now the scale is dropping. I also make sure not to get any carbs that aren't veggies or fruit. My body seems to hate carbs in the form of any kind of grains.

    Lapband to Sleeve Conversion

Well if I were you I'd get another opinion at a different practice. I was 275 when I had my band to sleeve revision done in the same surgery June 1st. My sleeve is a little larger because of scar tissue at the esophagus. My surgeon wanted to minimize the risk of leaks so he only took out about 75% of the stomach. But I have had zero problems and I feel fine. I have Anthem BCBS and all I had to do for the revision was go see a psychiatrist for one appointment and pass the pre-op surgery normal tests - EKG and bloodwork.

    Pureed foods, really?

I was on liquids and purees at the same time. I had to be able to drink Protein shake on the morning of day 3 to be able to leave the hospital. My list was Protein shakes, Greek yogurt, broth, cream soups and a few other things I don't remember. I went to soft foods like scrambled eggs on day 8 and then on solid foods on day 10. My surgeon's plan is solid foods between day 10 and day 14. He doesn't like for people to stay on liquids for very long - he wants us to begin to learn to eat solids and the right solids as soon as possible.

    Dark spot at surgical site

I had a giant bruise by my right elbow where they kept taking blood in the hospital. 7 weeks later it's still dark.

    Salads!

Well I eat my grilled chicken or grilled steak or taco meat on top of a salad. I make a bowl of lettuce, carrot, tomato, cucumber and add 4 or 5 oz of grilled steak or chicken or diced turkey and ham or taco meat and some cheese. Add a little Ranch dressing and that's lunch or dinner. You can eat both. I'm still getting in my protein for that meal. I get about 90 to 100 grams of protein a day.

    Salads!

I started salads at the end of week 3. My surgeon puts everyone on solids between day 10 and day 14. I eat one pretty much every day.
  18. I was eating lettuce just fine at 4 weeks out. I use Bibb lettuce or leaves of Romaine as the "bread" for the sandwich. I had 3/4 of a cheeseburger on Saturday with Bibb lettuce for the bun.
  19. My nutritionist specializes in baratric surgery diets. I trust her even though I may not always agree with her. There are some foods she thinks I should eat that I hate and I'm not going to eat them ever. Sorry but there are plenty of other options. And she gives me free stuff all the time - Protein shakes, Vitamins. She even gave me a free diabetes meter for my husband when we were having a conversation about his meter.

    Power crunch bars.

Fat is not the enemy in my weight loss. Sugar and carbs are. I lose weight eating fat, Protein, veggies and lower carb fruits. I use olive oil, real butter, walnut oil, coconut oil and hazelnut oil. I think it all depends on what your metabolism seems to like.

    Prilosec/Omeprazole

I absolutely would refuse to take it ever and the surgeon would have to figure something else out. I used to take Omeprozole every day and had taken it for a couple of years. Back in 2011 I was at my sister-in-law's parents' house and I fell off the bottom porch step. I broke the scaphoid bone in my left wrist. I had to have surgery to have a pin inserted and I had to wear a cast for 12 weeks. The orthopedic surgeon was shocked I broke that bone. I was 48 at the time and normally that bone is extremely rarely broken in women especially at my age. The typical break comes from a 20 something guy while he's doing extreme sports. We reported it to the FDA and not too long after that the FDA came out with a black box warning on Omeprozole that it can cause broken bones in women. I will NEVER take that again.

    Does everyone experience hairloss?

I have not had any hair loss at all. Not sure why since so many other people have.

    Unfill before surgery

I was unfilled about 6 weeks before surgery too but I was throwing up everything I tried to eat. Plus I was getting ready to make a trip for work to Colorado and the altitude when I had gone before made my band tighten up really tight.
  24. For the first two weeks around the house I wore knit shorts or pants and loose t-shirts. When I went to church I wore a dress with no fitted waist.

I am flat out hungry (rant)

I was hungry on day 8 too and my NUT started me on soft foods at that point. My surgeon's plan moves to lean Protein and either zucchini, summer squash and green Beans on day 10-14 depending on how you are feeling. I'd ask your NUT.
