sleeve done on the same day as spouse
hockeyfan7 replied to TLCRC3SexyMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a 7 year old so my husband took off two weeks of FMLA. Since I couldn't lift anything more than 10 pounds for several weeks, he had to do the grocery shopping, carry the laundry up and down stairs, take care of the cats and anything else that required heavy lifting. He ran all the errands, took my son to school and picked him up after. I slept a lot and was totally exhausted when I was awake so I can't imaging having had to do it without him. -
Did you chew it well enough? Perhaps the broccoli was too raw for your stomach and it couldn't handle it?

Initial surgeon appointment
hockeyfan7 replied to sandylyn88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember all that pre-testing stuff was crazy. I had to have a mammogram, a pregnancy test, bone density, sleep study, H pylori test, chest x-ray, EKG, blood work, psychiatry appointment, nutritionist appointment and pre-op surgeon appointment. The pregnancy test made me ggigle. I was 49 and had an ablation and my husband had a vasectomy several years ago so there was no way I was pregnant. -
Now when you are at work, just think about all the nasty coworkers who do not wash their hands after using the bathroom and then touch that food. They're picking at those donuts with filthy hands and sneezing on that pizza before taking some. You know they have to touch every donut before they get the one they want.

Heck when I weighed 395 I used to eat an entire large pizza with extra cheese, a pound bag of potato chips, a pint of ice cream and most of a box of chocolates for dinner on a regular basis. We'd go to this Chinese restaurant and I'd eat 2 deep fried appetizers and then have a deep fried entree. I could have easily eaten that meal and not thought twice about it.

Yep, exact same thing happened to me week 3. Down 20 the first two weeks and on week 3 up 3 pounds. Now at the start of week 5 those 3 are gone and I'm heading back down. Hang in there and it will come off. You shocked your body and it has to get adjusted to a new reality. It doesn't like change much and will go kicking and screaming into it.

You might be surprised to find you don't like those things anymore or you don't like the way they make you feel. I was totally craving ice cream. I had a bite and it was awful. It was totally sickeningly sweet and cloying. I tried it again a week later and it was the same way. The sugar free fudgesicles taste much better to me now. We went to a birthday party Friday night and I had a bite of the cake. Same thing - it was sickeningly sweet and nasty. And a nice medium rare ribeye or filet mignon or NY strip tastes so much better to me than pizza now - yum!

What does a day in your eating life look like?
hockeyfan7 replied to rvan09's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on week five post surgery. Breakfast has been a Qwest Protein bar because I can't stand the thought of another shake right now. They have 20 grams of protein, 7 to 10 grams of NET carbs and are low sugar. Sometimes I make scrambled eggs. Sometimes I have slices of deli meat and cheese spread with light chive and onion cream cheese and rolled up and cut into pinwheel bites. lunch is between 3 to 5 oz of protein - I alternate between steak, chicken, pork loin, lobster, shrimp or crab or salmon or some other fish. If I have room after eating the protein I eat a small salad or sliced zucchini that's been dipped in egg and Parmesan cheese and baked. I also sometimes eat green Beans. dinner is a repeat of lunch with a different protein. In the evening I usually have either a sugar free Popsicle or a sugar free Fudgesicle. -
Have some more Protein shake. My NUT said I could have as much as I could tolerate in a day. If you are allowed broth or cream soups, have some of that. I was also allowed Greek yogurt when I was on "liquids" and that helped too.

Have any of you drank Sparkling Ice?
hockeyfan7 replied to cuchas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had some sparkling flavored Water that has zero calories and no sugars. I also have no problems drinking from a straw. I don't drink a lot of it but I have had some here and there. -
Day One of Pre-Op Diet...I think I'd rather just starve.
hockeyfan7 replied to GirlOnFire's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try freezing the Protein Shake to about milkshake consistency if you like cold drinks. That was the only way I could drink them at first. I have to have anything I drink be ice cold or I can't stand it. -
FLMA How/When to notify your employer
hockeyfan7 replied to thingirlinsideme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband took FMLA for 2 weeks to be home with me. He submitted paperwork about a month in advance because the surgeon's office had to fill out a bunch of it and they aren't fast at it. Then it had to go to the FLMA company his company uses to be approved. We didn't have any problems but it took about 3 1/2 weeks all in. I didn't have to do FMLA for my job but he did just to be safe. His job is so different from mine. -
Shaving my legs and bled bled bled.....
hockeyfan7 replied to natnat919's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got heparin shots in the hospital every 4 hours for 2 1/2 days. I wonder if you got the same and didn't know it. They really didn't tell me what they were doing until I asked. I had 22 bruises between my arms and my legs from the heparin shots and the every 4 hour blood draws and the IV where they had to try 4 different places to put it. I was a mess. I love it when they asked me if I was safe at home. I told the nurse I was covered in bruises, someone was sticking me with a needle every 4 hours, my stomach had 6 incisions and you want to know if I'm safe at home? It's a lot safer at my house! -
My first follow up with my surgeon was 3 weeks after surgery. The next one is scheduled 6 weeks after that. The NUT first appointment was the week after surgery with the follow up scheduled for about 8 weeks after that.

My surgeon and NUT both told me to fill up on the lean Protein first - eat between 3 and 5 oz and if I've had 5 oz and I'm still feeling hungry, then eat veggies until I feel full. That seems to work well for me. I can tell when I'm feeling full which is really satisfied and not overstuffed. I tried a bite or two of ice cream and thought it tasted awful. It was sickeningly sweet. I'm liking sugar free fudgesicles and popsicles a lot more that regular sweets.

I had lap band in 2012. I didn't lose as much weight as I wanted and then last year I started throwing up everything I ate that I was supposed to be eating. I ended up eating stuff I shouldn't be just to keep anything down. We tried for six months to adjust the band and finally took out all the fill in April. I had the band removed and a sleeve done on June 1st. I am much happier with the sleeve. I can eat chicken again. I can eat any lean Protein and non-starchy veggies. I'm not throwing up at all. I eat in the 700 to 1000 calorie range depending on what I choose protein wise for the day. I chose the sleeve over the bypass because I didn't want the malabsorption issues and I didn't like the idea of messing around with my intestines.

Make a chocolate Protein shake and freeze it for about 30-40 minutes. It will be like a chocolate milkshake. -
Post Op diarrhea normal?
hockeyfan7 replied to Debbie623's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On my post-op paperwork from the hospital it said if I had diarrhea to call the surgeon immediately as it was not something that should be happening. -
Post op & eating in public!
hockeyfan7 replied to maxinee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same here. I'm on week 5 and I've eaten out twice. Soup and salad at Chili's and grilled chicken, steak and shrimp with veggies at the Mexican restaurant we went to yesterday. I have no problems with any foods so far. I take home most of the meal and it ends up being leftovers for the next couple of days - or my son or my husband eats the rest of my food. -

I work from home as a full time teleworker at my computer. I still took a week off. I was totally exhausted every day. The second week I ended up working 10 am to 4 pm and crashing around 4. The third week was a lot better and week four has been fine. My husband took two weeks FMLA from his work and stayed home with me and waited on me hand and foot while I was recovering though. Without him it would have been much tougher. He did everything and took care of our 7 year old for those 2 weeks.

Band to Sleeve GRIPE...feeling down and frustrated :(
hockeyfan7 replied to Just Lindsey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've never heard of the sleeve being bigger at the top because of the band. Has anyone else been told they would have a different shape if a revision? I asked my surgeon about that earlier this week when I had my post-op appointment. He said the same thing. He only took off about 70% instead of the normal 80% because of the scar tissue from the band at the top where the stomach meets the esophagus. He said he didn't wrap the sleeve as tightly around the measuring tube they use because he didn't want to run the risk of leaks around the esophagus/stomach meeting place and the scar tissue. He said it was safer that way. -
Band to sleeve revision?
hockeyfan7 replied to breepad08's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, I did it on June 1st. I was throwing up everything I ate with the band. So far, so good. My surgeon said he only removed about 70% of the stomach instead of the normal 80% to make sure with the scarring from the band I wouldn't have leaks around where the esophagus meets the stomach. So I've been able to eat a little more than usual once I got to solids. I'm very happy at this point. My port would move and hit a nerve and cause sharp pain in my stomach. I don't have that any longer. My food stays down. I can eat chicken again - I could never eat chicken in any shape, sort or form after my band. I haven't had problems with any kind of lean Protein so far. -
Should I be on a liquid diet 2 weeks before my surgery?
hockeyfan7 replied to Karen Crawford Wright's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wasn't on a liquid diet prior to surgery at all. My surgeon's pre-op diet is 3 small meals of 300 calories each of lean Protein and non-starchy veggies and 2 Protein shakes a day. I never had to do just liquids. -
I took clean underwear, clean clothes to wear home, deodorant, hairbrush, headband, lip balm, my cell phone and charger, Crocs for walking in the hallways, my bathrobe. The hospital let me wash up and gave me soap and towels and washcloth. They also brought me a clean gown every day. They let me wear my underwear with the gown, but nothing else. They didn't make me wear the non-skid socks. I wore my own Crocs when I was up walking around.
