How did you feel after surgery?

I had bypass on 12/15/15 and I was in pain. I ended up back at the doctor less than a week later over it. I could be a special case. I don't know. Good news is, I was much better by week three. I was off the hard pain meds and felt close to normal. I don't mean to scare you, I'm just being honest. My support group swore I'd be in no pain. I felt lied too.

When do I stop regretting my Gastric Bypass?

I don't regret my decision and I'm not vomiting but I do have similar feelings about food. I went to the strip mall that has my favorite take-out place and felt profoundly sad. I close my door to block out the smell of cooking food. I miss the comfort of something baked. The holidays were really hard. I can totally relate to those feelings.

Overall how have your moods changed?

Surgery was on 12/15, so I'm no vet but I can say I'm a bit depressed. I have a history of anxiety and depression so I'm dealing with it. What's really strange is how easily I cry. I used to be a little on the hard hearted side, but since surgery I can't go a day without weeping about -something-. A song. A commercial. Some random act of kindness. Something will make me cry.

December 2015 Surgery Dates - Gastric Bypass (RNY)

I was on pureed straight out the hospital. I did as I was told and tolerated it well. Shame my pureed chicken tasted like cat food so I ended up doing some sort of soft food/liquid hybrid.

    360+ pounds?!? help!

Highest weight was 400. I'm 5'7". I had to wait six months due to insurance requirements. I lost 35 pounds in that period. Now, two weeks out from RNY I'm down 50 pounds total. I picked RNY because it's gold standard. I have a lot of weight to lose and I wanted to lose it in the most efficient and studied way possible. I had a few more reasons I picked it over the Sleeve. Discomfort with the process of losing a part of my stomach forever, a family history of reflux, the slower pace. It's a great surgery for some, but I didn't feel it was right for me. As for dumping, I'm not so far out that I've experimented with fat or sugar too much. I may not dump at all for all I know. But I am very, very careful because it a pretty good deterrent. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you will be successful.
  6. Thank you for sharing. You look great, skin or no skin. I have a similar stats to you and it's good to know what to expect. And all in all, it's not that bad.

December 2015 Surgery Dates - Gastric Bypass (RNY)

Two week followup went really well. I lost 15 pounds in a week. (I had been into the office a week earlier over a pain issue) I can't even fathom that. It blows my mind. I keep wondering what I've done to myself and why and that visit helped a ton in reminding me why. Can't stop now. Gotta keep losing.

Do You Eat Breakfast? What Do You Have?

Right now, a week post-op, I start my day with either a premier protein shake or a little bit of egg beaters.

    Updates on December 2015 Surgeries

The pain on my right side was enough to call my surgeon's office and go in. Apparently, my Protein and fluids are solid. My surgeon is proud of me. I even got a little card for restaurants that let me order from the children's menu. I'm a card carrying member! My pain is because of a large bruise and knot inside of it. The knot is a pocket of Fluid. It still hurts and I'm still on pain meds for now, but it is getting better. I'll be alright by the end of the week, I think.

December 2015 Surgery Dates - Gastric Bypass (RNY)

Surgery was on 12/15. It went smoothly. I came home the next day in a lot of pain. I ran out of meds. I have a large bruise on my stomach with a knot on it. It concerned me enough to go see my surgeon. He assured me it was normal and re-uped my pain meds. He's apparently proud of my progress in meeting my Fluid and Protein goals. I also got a little card that lets me eat off the children's menu. I'm a card carrying bariatric now! So, overall, I'm good. But it's a little bumpy.

    Updates on December 2015 Surgeries

Surgery was on 12/15 and I'm starting to feels the first tinges of regret. I'm still in pain, particularly on my right side. It keeps me from walking like I should. I'm getting scared of running out of pain meds before it stops. I'm not quite getting enough fluids but my Protein intake is good. I might not be eating enough, I'm not even sure. But I figured if protein and Water goals were met, It's good enough for now. Between pain and food worries, I'm wondering if I did the right thing. I have no idea if any weight has been lost. (I made a promise to myself. Weigh only once a month.) I'm sorry to be a downer. I just needed to vent. My head knows I did the right thing. My heart is in another place.

Anyone else having surgery in December?

Today's the day! I'm feeling oddly serene as I sit here, before heading to the hospital. Wish me luck, my journey begins today.

Do You Attend Support Group Meetings?

My surgeon has a support group that meets twice a month in the office's waiting room. It's lead by the bariatric nurse who is also facilitator for the surgeon. (He does everything from support to insurance) It works. I was required by the program to attend one, so I did that and found it helpful to hear from the vets. I've tried to attend one a month since I started this six months ago and I intend to keep going after surgery.

    Updates on December 2015 Surgeries

I'm going in on tuesday, the 15th. On the subject of post-op diets, my puree stage starts as soon as I get out the hospital overnight. Liquids are for the hospital. I feel terribly lucky I get to skip clear liquids and full liquids and all that. I'll be back after surgery with an update!
