Frustrated and Grateful at the same time
MIMISAN posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I made a post about this previously but my saga continues. I am currently midway through my 6 month supervised dieting for my insurance and one thing my WLS Surgeon requested was that I get clearance from my Cardio Specialist since I have Supra Ventricular Tachycardia. So I go to the Cardiologist and he takes this opportunity to strong arm me into a PET scan. I had always refused this before but to get his clearance I said OK. So I had the Pet Scan and got a call from the cardiologist saying that he sees an abnormality and he wants me to do an echo cardiogram as follow up. I do the echo and then I go for consultation with the cardiologist. He then tells me that he wants me to have a have a heart catheterization because he is afraid there might be a blockage or something going on. Needless to say he wouldn't be able to give a clearance without it. So....I went in and had the heart cath which was quite scary and low and behold I ended with 2 stents in my heart. Now I have to be on blood thinners for at least 6 months. Since I am on blood thinners most likely the WLS surgeon won't want to take the chance and do my surgery so now I have 3 months of dieting under my belt and no where to go with it. BOO HOO I am waiting to hear back from the WLS Surgeon to tell me his requirements so that I can make some plans on how to continue. In any case, if it weren't for me trying to get WLS then I might not have found out about the blockages that I was working on and for that I am thankful. -
I wanted to add that I also worry about hair loss and loose skin but I think you have a better chance of less loose skin because of your age. I am much older and I am sure I will look like a blood hound. I don't look forward to that but I will be healthier and that is my goal.

I haven't had my surgery yet but like GraciesMom4 I can lose weight and gain it over and over again. I want the surgery to stop me from back sliding so easily. In my opinion...If you don't want to make changes in your life and your not ready for change, don't have the surgery. Surgery is a last ditch effort to help you gain control over something you can't control. I would rather be depressed because I can eat than depressed because I weigh 350 pounds, but that needs to be your choice because until your ready to change the part of your life style that makes you fat, you probably won't commit after surgery.

Any 6 month nutrition people still hanging in their?
MIMISAN replied to sleever314's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my 6 month supervised dieting in June also. I am eating low carb/hi Protein. What plan are you on? So far I have been very committed and I have lost 20 lbs. Lately I seemed to have stalled a little bit even though I am still eating the same way and I finally realized it is because I dropped off on my Water drinking. I must get use to drinking WATER! Keep at it, get committed, I know we can do this! -
God works in mysterious way.....Testing for surgery uncovers issues
MIMISAN posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I have known for some years I have Supra Ventricular tachycardia which is some type of irregular heartbeat and this has not been a big deal. The heart Dr. has always wanted me to do a chemical stress test called a PET scan and I was always scared of it. However in order for me to be able to go forward with the idea of the gastric sleeve my surgeon wanted my heart doctor to give clearance for surgery and my cardiologist decided to force my hand and require the PET scan in order to release me. Badda Bing Badda Boom....I had the test and I get a call that they have noticed an abnormality in a portion of my heart. I go visit the Dr. today and he has scheduled me to have a heart catheter done on Friday because he thinks I may have a blockage and may need a stint! The good news is that this may have been caught before it gets serious (providing the procedure goes well) The bad news is that It will probably delay my surgery by a few more MONTHS! -
New to forum, considering GS but I have some questions
MIMISAN posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone I am new to this forum and have not had any surgery yet. I am just set to visit the Dr. next week but I was hoping to get first hand answers to a few questions. I will be 62 in September and I worry that I might have waited to long. I work full time and have insurance that I am hoping will at least help with the costs. Have others had the surgery that late? I am a happily married female, we married when I was about 200 lbs but since then I have gone to 300 plus. I know my husband worries about my weight but he is far to kind to say something that might upset me. I am sure he would prefer me to be thinner, but he is also an enabler in his own way. For years I have thought people that went the surgery route were cheats because we should be able to do it ourselves but I have found I just haven't been able to do it myself. I can lose it and I generally gain it back within a year plus 5 or 10 more. I would love to be more active but when your as heavy as I am that becomes a vicious circle. When I try to be active, I hurt myself or become mortified and then I sit to recover and so on and so on. My feet, hips and legs constantly hurt and that also encourages me to sit on my butt and while I am there I might as well have ice cream. I know this is what has gotten me where I am and I am ready for help!!!!!!! One of my big concerns is hair LOSS. When I had my hysterectomy at 38 they had to put me on hormones to help me stop the hair loss. Even with that my hair is now fairly thin on top and I do not want to be bald or patchy. Is there a way to avoid this? My last concern is that since I am older and have been fat for much of my life, won't I just look like a defated bloodhound with skin folds everywhere? Will that be harder on me than fat? Any help is appreciated.- 8 replies

I am pretty happy with how today went at the nutritionists. I started my supervised diet plan with her and after the 1st 30 days I lost 15 lbs for a total of 20 so far. She was pleased and said by her scales and figures I was not losing muscle either but pure fat so that shows her that I was eating correctly. I am happy and hope to lose about the same this month. Even though I have done very well with my low carb- high Protein I think one of the biggest factors is NO COKES and ice cream. I am no longer craving my cokes so that is better, now I am just looking for more variety in my diet. Wish me luck guys, I need all the prayers I can get.

Never feel full ...presurgery
MIMISAN replied to Bloomer723's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is what we are suppose to be learning. We don't need to feel so full that we might pop! LOL This is what gets us in this shape to start with. I am in my six month diet to satisfy insurance and I have days that I feel like I just want more but if I get busy and don't focus on food, I find that I am eating plenty and eventually your habits should change. After the sleeve I am sure you will feel full but don't push it till you feel uncomfortable. -
I have been on my supervised 6 months for a couple of months now and I have really done pretty well so far but I am beginning to worry. I have lost 20 lbs in the 1st month so I am working at it but its getting harder. The problem is that I like a lot of variety in my food and everyday I have to rack my brain trying to think of things that I can eat for variety for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Since my nut wants me on low carb high Protein that lets me eat lots of meat and protein but the problem is that I work 10 hours a day and its very hard to constantly go to the store for fresh foods. So variety is hard to have. I am also not a breakfast eater so that is a pain, I usually just find myself having a Protein shake. I am beginning to realize that one of the reasons I am fat is that I like things that are quick and eazy (I'm lazy-at least I admit it) I like Cereal for breakfast and since I work away from home I use to grab quick food and at night my husband and I usually eat at different times so its difficult to cook good appealing meals for one all the time. What it boils down to is I need some help with EASY ideas for variety for packed lunches and dinner. Also easy ideas for breakfast that don't involve cooking if possible. Sorry I sound whiney this morning. Today is my day to feel sorry for myself but I will get over it. BUT PLEASE HELP

Need Suggestions for What to Tell People Who Ask If I've Had WLS
MIMISAN replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I always remember " Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive" Once you start fibbing you have to remember who you told what. Just be truthful. They may be asking because they want to know how they can do the same. If people are smart asses, then they aren't your friends anyway. Be proud and show them its a great decision! -
6 WEEKS POST OP AND I CANT TAKE IT
MIMISAN replied to Evvydots's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get to your Dr. There is no reason to be miserable when there is a perfectly good Dr. for you to bug the hell out of, right? I actually had something called Shatzi's ring which sounds much like what you say and it was just caused by constant Gerd, reflux and heartburn that caused scar tissue around the bottom of the esophagus. The procedure was painless in that instance because they put me out and when I woke up it was much better! -
My insurance is being such a pain that I asked my Dr. office what they charge if its personal pay at they told me $14,500

The Dr. Supervised Diet & Questions about Illinois Medicaid
MIMISAN replied to Beck90's topic in Insurance & Financing
If they are like my insurance they will be looking for Dr. appt dates and Dr. notes on your weight each month as well as what your are working with the Dr. on regarding teaching you the proper way to eat. Most Drs. are afraid of being sued to lie about those things, but you can ask him. They want an actual month to month record. -
I actually started my 6 month supervised dieting on July 21st. It really is a low carb diet with lots of Water. So far I am doing very well and I have lost 12lbs as of 8/3/14 (by my scale). I attribute this to not cheating with carbs and by quitting cokes cold turkey. I usually drank at least one a day but usually two and haven't had one since the 21st. I had a headache for a bout 3 days but since I am still drinking coffee that helped a lot. I am determined to get some of this weight off even if I never get the surgery, so I am not cheating and sticking very much to plan. The truth is that if you can't follow the plan to get the surgery you probably won't follow it well after the surgery so I am just looking at this as my new way of eating. Trying to use food as fuel instead of as a reward.

I think the main reason you should not drink alcohol is the same reason I shouldn't drink cokes. They are empty calories that got us fat to start with.

My heart Dr. required me to have a pet scan because I have supraventricular tachycardia. He wanted this before he could give my doctor the ok as a low risk surgery person. Anyway, I was terrified of this and had put it off for years. Went in the morning at 8:30 and the whole thing took about an hour. After all my fear it was fairly easy. My only side effect was a low grade headache and now its behind me! Yea me!

struggling with liquid diet (August 5th surgery)
MIMISAN replied to lauren8486's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my anniversay sure would have loved to ho out to eat .. But just think how good you are going to look and feel for that next anniversary! You can do it. One thing I do with my Premier vanilla Protein drink is I add 4 small fresh strawberries to it and whip it up in by bullet blender. It makes it thicker and frothy and more like a real shake. -
I have been on my supervised dieting now for just a couple of weeks but so far I have been doing fantastic and I feel fantastic about it. My NUT told me low carb hi Protein and suggested between 30-40 carbs a day as a goal. I have really been toeing the line and even though I have had several temptations nothing has pulled me off. Even able to ignore the hubby eating nutty buddy ice cream. I purchased it before I started dieting and it has to be eaten so I told him to have at it. What really makes me happy is that we went out to lunch yesterday for the first time to our favorite Fish place. We love their catfish. I was torn for a few minutes but actually found myself reading the menu and asking questions. I ended up with a GRILLED SHRIMP salad, all totally approved and a glass of Water. It hit the spot and proves I can eat out and follow the plan too. I am not scheduled to see the NUT again until Aug 17th and I can't wait to see if the change shows up in my weight.

That worries me too since I already have thin hair.
-
I think its a neat idea but I went through it and there isn't enough in my size right now. Maybe after the surgery on the way down.
-
I have a Ninja type thing that is kinda like the bullet and I used it yesterday. I put one of the premade vanilla shakes in and added 4 frozen strawberries. It was delicious. Made it more thick and frothy like a real shake and I loved it. Now I am just in my 6 month dieting but I plan to do the same latter too.

You do look fabulous and I am happy for you too. -
I take Omeprazole everyday and have for 10 years. Won't bother me to continue it as long as I can get rid of some of my other meds.
