I've never been thin and am not sure I ever will be. My battle with weight began as a child, I suppose. I was never super heavy, just always the chubby kid. My weight started to become a noticeable problem in my mid to late twenties. It just seems that no matter what I did or didn't do, the weight just kept increasing. I had become very conscious of it as well as PCOS and related issues in my late twenties. While taking doctor prescribed appetite suppressants to try to lose weight, I found out I was (unexpectedly) pregnant for the very first time with none other than twins. (not ideal, very scary.) I developed gestational diabetes and and hypertension. 4 years later with my next child, the same gestational diabetes and hypertension. I was told afterward and since that I have insulin resistance which will make it more likely for me to develop type 2 diabetes. Since having my children, I have not been able to diet and exercise my way to a BMI below 33-34. I lose weight, but minimal and tend to gain it back and then some. Now at age 42, I have a 40+ BMI, insulin resistance, degenerative disks and joints, back surgery, knee surgery, shoulder, wheezing, chronic inflammation and most recent diagnosis of erosive esophagitis. My medicine cabinet looks like a pharmacy and enough is enough. Given my BMI and co-mobidities, my insurance has authorized weight loss surgery. My chosen surgeon, Dr. V. Prachand @ University of Chicago has recommended Roux en Y for my particular needs. Given my existing dx of GERD and erosion of my esophagus, Dr. Prachand would not agree to perform the gastric sleeve on me. He recommends Roux en Y not only for weight loss, but also to help with the GERD and to prevent further complications from that. I'm scared ofcourse, but also very hopeful that losing the excess weight will help with my many other health related issues and greatly improve my lifespan and quantity of life. I not only want to be more active with my children, but want to live to meet their children some day. I was given my surgery date today. 27 days until my weight loss surgery "journey" officially begins.
