My name is Shay and I have been overweight since I Was born at 10 lbs! I literally cannot remember a day in my life where I was not chubby, chunky, fluffy. About 10 years ago I lost 225 lbs through excessive diet and exercise in about 12 months. My body was not happy, I wasn't happy and I had no idea what maintenance meant. The weight came back on in a year. Just as long as it took me to lose it. I was discouraged and felt worse than before. I gave up. But not for long, I really started studying why we gain weight, why we lose weight and maintenance. I had always been told by doctors that WLS was a good option for me, but I was stubborn and fought that label and believed it was too drastic, I could do it on my own. But studying the surgery and its effects gave me a different perspective. I began the process and did all the tests.  I maintained my weight ( albeit a heavy one) for almost a year. I was denied by my insurance 3 times. It was excluded from our policy. I didn't have the funds for a self pay Mexico option as I am the sole provider for our family Then I got thyroid cancer (another story). Shortly after treatments and surgery for the cancer I switched jobs, new insurance and Bariatric was covered! I waited my 90 days until coverage kicked in and began the process again. Many more tests this time, and a few more hoops but I was approved on 7/31/18, had my Pre-op the same day and surgery is set for 8/8/2018! My surgeon has been with me through the whole 3 year process. I am excited and nervous. But cant wait for the second half of my life.
