All sorts of Crazy questions in one post!
marypups replied to redsohare's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
People here like Quest Protein bars (I love them) but it will be a month at least after surgery before you are probably allowed to eat them. They are great in a pinch. -
I am a stomach sleeper, and slept on my side the first two nights, and assumed I would have to for weeks, but I did not love it. On the third night, I was so tired I laid down without thinking on my stomach and slept comfortably. I was little panicked when I woke up that I had done that, but my incisions looked fine (well bandaged and not bleeding). After that I always slept on my stomach and all was well. I did not have significant pain after day two and was not taking pain meds after that day.

How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
marypups posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost three months out, and I am having trouble eating any fruits or veggies. My NUT has recommended that I work on veggies, but I don't know how to do this and still get in my Protein. I feel like I eat all the time and barely make my protein goals. I am hitting the protein goals, but am worried that adding in veggies will mean I won't get my protein goal. My typical day looks like this: Breakfast 6:30: one egg with cheese (10g protein) 10:00 greek yogurt (15g) lunch: costco chicken salad (14 g) snack: greek yogurt (15g) dinner: 2/3 oz chicken or something family is eating (10 g) sometimes: 1/2 Quest bar as dessert (10g) Or sometimes I do eat a small handful of prunes. So, I am doing well on protein and also getting fluids in. But I really feel like there is little room for vegetables. I know I need vegetables and Fiber. How do you get your veggies in and still get in your protein requirements? -
Wedding on 10/10
marypups replied to Pillar2butterfly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't you think there will be chicken or some form of Protein at the wedding? I have been to several weddings and fancy parties since I was sleeved three months ago, and there was always something good to choose. (Lots of bad stuff, too, but plenty of fine choices if I chose to make them). Personally, I would lay off the alcohol for a little while longer. -
How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
marypups replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, y'all have inspired me. I am going to make some spinach, feta and egg mini muffins tonight to have for breakfast. I will eat my veggies! I actually really like my veggies; I have just been paranoid about not getting enough Protein. -
I missed two days of work. I flew to Mexico Wednesday evening, had the surgery Thursday, flew home on a Sunday, and went back to work Monday. I have a desk job. On the first day back, I worked a shorter day, but after that, I was really fine.

I ate split pea soup at probably two weeks out when I started pureed foods. No problems at all.

I'm about 9 weeks out and have lost almost 30 pounds. Though this is slower than lots of people, I am pretty happy with it and will be delighted if my weight loss continues at this pace. I'm able to eat pretty well and I feel great. I'm not hungry and that is wonderful. For the last week or so, I've been eating about a half a Quest bar as "dessert" around 7:00. I find them very delicious and I really look forward to the chocolate. It also helps me get in 10 additional grams of Protein. I track my calories, etc., and I am well under what my nutritionist tells me to eat. But I have not lost any weight this week, and I don't know if this is a coincidence or stall or related to the Quest bars. I think I had read that some people have found a correlation between eating Quest bars and no weight loss. I would love to hear from people about their thoughts.

Tell me what you eat when you go out now?
marypups replied to Savannah Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 8 weeks out and I go out all the time because that's what my family does. My husband and I have a system where we always split an entrée. I order something that I know he will like--generally fish or chicken with some veggies. When it arrives, I take a very small amount of each and put it on a separate plate. He eats the rest and there is always plenty for him, given how huge restaurant portions are. It helps that hubby is flexible and a good egg. He likes that we save money. -
I bought them once at a convenience store. They are terrible! They really taste bad, but if you totally cover them in salsa or something else, they might be useful as a means of delivering the salsa to your mouth. I thought they tasted like cardboard and could not finish the small bag.

Protein Shakes Make Me Gag
marypups replied to kelseysleevedup's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hate Protein shakes, too. Early on I decided I would try to eat four Greek yogurts a day (15 grams each) if I have to in order to avoid Protein Shakes. I no longer have to do it because I am 8 weeks out, but I did do it some days. But you could eat Greek yogurt and cottage cheese and do pretty well. -
Congratulations!

Throwing up a lot, need advice
marypups replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the advice, all. I don't think I am eating too much. I did not get close to finishing my food today, and it is an amount that I've eaten on several occasions without trouble. My doctor specifically advised me to weigh food, and I do that regularly. But I do think I am eating too fast. I have been pretty inconsistent about taking it slow, and I tend to throw up when I eat too quickly. But I actually wanted to know the question (gross as it is) that I asked. If I throw up, do I log any of the food on MFP? It seems like if I don't write it down, I am not counting some calories. But if I log it all, I am giving myself credit for more Protein than I should. So, not sure how to do that. But I do get that stopping the barfing is far better than figuring out how to log it. Thanks, all Mary -
I hope this is not too gross, but I have been throwing up a lot in recent days. I am seven weeks out, and am eating all regular food, having recently given up Protein shakes bc I hate them and think I am doing ok getting my protein in. I do add Protein powder to a few foods. Generally I do pretty well, but perhaps once a day I throw up after eating. This happens most when I go to restaurants--even though I am not eating all that much. The problem I am having is that I regularly throw up from (I guess) eating too much. This happened this morning when I had sliced turkey and cheese for Breakfast. I weighed my food (2 oz. turkey, 1 oz cheese) but could not finish it and ended up throwing up a ot of it, after I was so pleased with myself for getting 19 grams of protein for breakfast. I think I ate too fast. So, my question is (gross as it is) how do I log this? Do I pretend I never ate it? I am sure I absorbed some calories from the food, but certainly not all. I don't want to pretend that I actually got 19 grams of protein when much of it did not stay down. I probably need to eat a lot, lot slower. But when this happens, any advice about how to log this--eaten or not eaten, half credit? Something else?

Horseback Riding Peeps-When Should I be Able to Start Riding Again?
marypups replied to Sunshine3073's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I rode about 5 weeks out when I was on vacation. It was a trail ride and I did not get too fancy. In retrospect, I am not sure that I should have, but I really did not think about whether it was a good idea until later. Then it occurred to me "I should have asked my doctor before I did that!" It went fine for me, But, of course, do what your doctor tells you. -
I am seven weeks out and I've been drinking a lot of the Vitamin Water zero recently. In fact, I've been feeling good about how much I am drinking in an effort to get in my fluids. Since it had "zero" in the title and says zero calories, I was surprised to notice just now that it has 5 carbs in each bottle. I've been trying to drink at least two a day while at work (40 ozs) but now am not sure I want 10 carbs a day from these things. But my question is how can something have 5 carbs and zero calories? That makes no sense to me. (Although lots of things make no sense to me that are true.) Mary

Americans with disabilities act (ADAAA) for surgery?
marypups replied to provenzee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is really nothing to "apply for" under the ADA. A covered employer (assuming your employer is large enough to be covered( which it sounds like it is, since they are advising you about the ADA) has to grant a reasonable accommodation for your disability. You have to tell them you are disabled and ask for the accommodation. The ADA defines a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. If I were you, I would get a doctors note explaining your medical condition and I would show it to them and ask for an accommodation for your disability (obesity and whatever co-morbidities you have). Explain that the accommodation you want is time off to have this surgery and recover. If they say no, talk to an employment lawyer who handles disability discrimination or your state Protection and Advocacy agency. -
costco just opened up in my town. I went there and I was so excited bc it has all sorts of amazing things designed for people with WLS--little individual mozzarella cheeses, 4 oz containers of chicken salads (so delicious, 14 grams of Protein, 140 calories) individual hummuses. Boxes of small Greek yogurts! Lots of Protein shakes (although I hate almost all such shakes and am desperate for other sources of protein). It is amazing what makes me excited these days. Also, although I thought my weight loss was slow (and it is compared to many people) today (six weeks post op) my pants literally fell off me. That was pretty exciting.

I told no one. Actually, I told my husband, but no one else, including my kids. I had plans to tell other people but decided that I did not want them watching me to see what I was eating or whether I appeared to be losing weight. So, I decided I would tell people later when I started to feel really successful. But on my own terms and in my own way. Or not, when and if I decided. I had a good recovery, and it was easy to just tell folks that I was not feeling well for a few days.

What's the reason you don't want to go out of state or to Mexico? I paid less than $4500 in Mexico and the experience was excellent. Is there a reason you don't want to consider traveling?

Did anyone go back to work before 2 weeks ?
marypups replied to shellyd67's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery in Mexico on Thursday, returned home on Sunday and went to work (half a day) on Monday. I worked the rest of that week (slowly and with a few breaks) and it was fine. Really, I found it better than just sitting around at home. I have a pretty cushy job where I just sit at a desk, and I could drink Water, take breaks, and walk around whenever I wanted. -
I left on a two week vacation at three weeks post op. It was challenging finding the food I needed (we were in another country) and I did make my husband carry my suitcase up stairs. But other than that, it went fine. We did all sorts of exercise and tours (kayaking, walking, etc.) and it was totally great.

Quest makes a Protein chip that I bought once when desperate. The small bag has about 30 grams of protein. I did not like them very much, but they might be just the thing if you cover them with salsa.

refried beans with salsa and cheese, lots of soups, cottage cheese

You do not need that s*** in your life.
